Lorraine Gaspard Young, a retired housekeeper, died June 7 of complications from diabetes at Memorial Medical Center. She was 67. Mrs. Young was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She retired from the Congress Inn. She attended Valena C. Jones Elementary School and Joseph S. Clark High School. She was a member of Wilson Chapel A.M.E. Church. Survivors include a foster son, Ronald Helmstetter; two foster daughters, Mary Lynne Jacks and Pauline Helmstetter; two sisters, Angelina Perry of Los Angeles and Hilda Mae Gaspard; eight foster grandchildren; and nine foster great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Wilson Chapel A.M.E. Church, 10121 Old Gentilly Road. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home, 1610 Lapeyrouse St. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Robert Darby, a master mason and bricklayer, died Tuesday of colon cancer at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 79. Mr. Darby was born in Georgetown, S.C., and lived in New Orleans for the past 52 years. Survivors include a sister, Annie Mae Simmons. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, 1925 Ursulines Ave. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Burial will be private. Heritage Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

David Williams, a retired journeyman and industrial painter with Naval Support Activity, died Saturday at his home. He was 78. Mr. Williams was born in Raceland and lived in Harvey. He attended Union Baptist Theological Seminary. He was an Army sergeant and received the Good Conduct, ATO-American Campaign, Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign and Foreign Service medals. Mr. Williams was a deacon and a Sunday school and Bible study teacher at Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church. He also was a member of Mount Pilgrim Lodge No. 91. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Williams; two sons, Larry and Don Williams; a daughter, Dalell Williams McCune of Somerset, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Collins; a brother, Albert Williams; a sister, Sadie Adams; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church, Harvey. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Christian Social cemetery, Gretna. Davis Mortuary Service is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin Charles "Thirty Licks" Williams, a laborer, died Monday of liver disease at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge. He was 45. Mr. Williams was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include four sons, Melvin, Calvin, Michael and Kenneth Baker; his mother, Mathilda Williams; four brothers, Willie, Stanley and Earl Williams, and Leo Young; and six sisters, Pearline Watkins, Wanda Caraby, and Delores, Ella, Debra and Lisa Williams. Willie E. Vance Jr., a laborer at J&L; Trucking, Inc., died Monday of a gunshot wound in the 1300 block of Bienville Street. He was 23. Mr. Vance was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Charles R. Taylor Sr., a retired longshoreman, died Friday at Kindred Hospital of complications from injuries suffered when he was hit by a car. He was 74. Mr. Taylor was born in Wilmington, N.C., and lived in New Orleans for the past 50 years. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include a son, Charles Taylor Jr.; two daughters, Sylvia Taylor and Lynn Taylor Salvant; two brothers, Johnny and Willie Taylor; two sisters, Mary Taylor Davis and Dorothy Taylor Hensly; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Joycelyn Kuntz and Barbara Pellegrin; three brothers, Richard, Emile "Buzzy" and Leonard Aufrecht; a sister, Marion Broussard; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Darlene Anne Raphiel Spencer, a former food plant manager, died Monday of a heart attack at Barton County Memorial Hospital. She was 52. Mrs. Spencer was born in New Orleans and lived in Folsom before moving to Lamar, Mo., 2½ years ago. She was manager of Smith Food Plant in Lamar and a member of the Barton County Eagles Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Larry Bryan Spencer; a son, Frank Mancuso; a daughter, Sharon Myers; a stepdaughter, Shannon Plank; a stepson, Shane Spencer; her mother, Myrtle M. Raphiel; three sisters, Peggy A. Gatlin, Linnea J. Knuesel and Lisa M. Gould; and eight grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at noon at E.J. Vernon Joseph Leslie Smith, a retired executive administrator with Southeast Louisiana Hospital, died Wednesday at Baton Rouge General Hospital. He was 89. Mr. Smith was born in Lewisburg and was a lifelong resident of Mandeville. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of the Mandeville Lions Club and a former Scoutmaster with the Mandeville Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife, Dollie Rose Smith; four sons, Leslie, Kenneth, Vernon and Forrest Smith; two daughters, Kathleen Curtis and Priscilla Pinckard; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Mandeville. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Schoen Funeral Home in Covington and Saturday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Mandeville cemetery.
