Sarah Savage Slain

Sept. 28, 1914 - Feb. 26, 2003

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Sarah Savage Slain, 88, of Ferriday, who died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at her residence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rosehill Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Schiele officiating.

Burial will be in the Ferriday cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Slain was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Woodville, the daughter of Emanuel and Louisa Corley Savage.

She was a homemaker and a member of Rosehill Baptist Church where she served on the mother's board.

Mrs. Slain was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Slain Sr.; one son, Douglas Slain; and one daughter, Media Slain.

Survivors include three sons, Samuel Slain and his wife, Lizzie, both of Los Angeles, Charles Slain Jr. and his wife, Brenda, both of Ferriday and Michael L. Slain of New Orleans; two daughters, Lucy Slain and Velma Turner, both of Ferriday; one sister, Beulah Farris of Rhinehart; grandson and caregiver, Emerson Slain of Ferriday; 10 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carolyn Rose Smith

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Carolyn Rose Smith, 63, of Ferriday, who died Monday, June 23, 2003, in New Orleans, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Young's Funeral Home Chapel in Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Pecanty

Oct. 30, 1930 - June 22, 2003

VIDALIA, La. - Services for James Pecanty, 72, of Ferriday, La., who died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Rapides General Medical Center in Alexandria, La., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vidalia Missionary Baptist Church with David McCormick, Cecil Harrington and Sam Russ officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. today until service time Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Pecanty was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Eva, La.

He was a tool pusher for David New and Rebel Drilling and was employed nine years with Pinkerton Security. He was also a member of Vidalia Missionary Baptist Church and a veteran serving in the Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

Mr. Pecanty was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Pecanty; his mother, Virginia Hamilton Pecanty; great-granddaughter, Raven Laura Guinn.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Pecanty of Ferriday; one daughter, Darlene Pecanty Davis of Vidalia; three sons, James "Jimmy" Pecanty and wife, Elaine, both of Monterey, La., Larry Glynn Temple and wife, Faye, both of Winnsboro, La. and Roy Lee Temple and wife, Darlene, both of Bryan, Texas; sister, Bennie Pecanty and Floyd Golemon of Glenmora, La.; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Pecanty, Travis Morace, Paul Owens, Jamie Pecanty, Todd Goleman, Jeffery Golemon, Todd Wright and Jessie Davis.

Kenneth Edward "Kenny" King

Sept. 20, 1951 - June 18, 2003

NEWELLTON, La. - Services for Kenneth Edward "Kenny" King, 51, of Newellton, who died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, after a battle with cancer, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Newellton with the Rev. Fulton McGraw and the Rev. Wayne Stroud officiating.

Burial will be in Legion Memorial cemetery in Newellton under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Kenny was born Sept. 20, 1951.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Rhonda Turner King; one daughter, Beth King Brocato and her husband, Jamie Brocato; one son, Kenneth "Ken" King and his wife, Shayne King; two granddaughters, Sierra Jester and Mecca King; one grandson, Cody Brocato; his parents, Marvin and Margie King; three sisters, Joann King Hankins, Denise King and Kim King; and one childhood blood brother, Louis Goodwin, Jr.

Pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School class.

Michael T. Boykin

April 1, 1983 - June 16, 2003

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Michael T. Boykin, 20, of Vidalia, who died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. today at Vidalia First Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Nunn and the Rev. Matt Buckles officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. until service time today at the church.

Mr. Boykin was born April 1, 1983, in Natchez, the son of Grady Earl Boykin, Jr. and Cynthia Grace Loomis Boykin.

He was a member of Vidalia Calvary Baptist Church, was a graduate of Vidalia High School and was employed with Natchez Bicycle Shop.

Mr. Boykin was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Lottie Mae Boykin and his maternal grandfather, W. K. Loomis, Jr.

Survivors include his parents, Grady Boykin, Jr. and his wife, Sara T. Boykin, both of Vidalia and Cynthia L. Boykin of Natchez; sister, Lacy L. Boykin of Baton Rouge, La.; paternal grandfather, Grady E. Boykin, Sr. and his wife, Sally Austin Boykin, both of Natchez; maternal grandmother, Betty P. Loomis of Lake St. John, La.; step-brother, Kyle Temple; step-sister, Hanah Temple, both of Vidalia.

Pallbearers will be Doug Warshaw, Blake Smith, Byron Prince, Ryan Boles, Aaron Tiffee and Michael Licliter.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to Make a Wish Foundation.

Elvin Ray Scott

July 3, 1974 - March 26, 2003

Vidalia, La. - Funeral Services for Elvin Ray Scott, 28, of Vidalia, who died March 26, 2003 in New Orleans, La. will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Vidalia cemetery with the Rev. Justin Conner officiating.

Burial will be at Vidalia cemetery.

Mr. Scott was born July 3, 1974 in Natchez, the son of Patricia Ann Scott.

Mr. Scott was preceeded in death by one brother, Kelvin Scott and grandfather, Roger Hollis, Sr. and one uncle Roger Hollis, Jr.

Suvivors include his mother, Patricia Ann "Hilda" Scott of Ferriday; one sister, Sharon S. Schiele of Ferriday; one brother, Larry D. Scott of Atlanta, Ga; maternal grandmother, Elnora Hollins of Vidalia; five aunts, Aline Carter (Lawrence), Rosa M. Henderson (Sam) all of Ferriday, Earline Scott (Kelvin) and Elnora Hollins (Ricky) of New Orleans, La, Emmieline Scott (Charles) of Vidalia; five uncles, Rickey Hollins (Catrina) of Vidalia, Andrew Hollins and Keith Johnson (Edna) of Ferriday; Matthew Scott (Debbie); Randy Hollins (Geraldine) of New Orleans; three great aunts, Mary H. Scott of Monroe, La; Fannie Boyd of Vidalia and Mary Wilson of New Orleans. Three nieces and one nephew.

Annie Cockerham Crooks

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Annie Cockerham Crooks, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Free Methodist Church near Jonesville.

Burial will be in Heard cemetery in Manifest, La. under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. today until service time at the church.

John "J.T." Thomas Owen

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for John "J.T." Thomas Owen, 87, of Waterproof, LA, who died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at St. Frances Hospital Monroe, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Young's Funeral Home Chapel in Ferriday with the Rev. Curtis Smith officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home, Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was a resident of Waterproof, LA, a school teacher and principle and a member of LA retired teachers association. He was a graduate of Mississippi Universtiy with a masters degree. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Waterproof where he served as Sunday School Teacher and served in the Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Owen was preceded in death by a son, John T. Owen Jr.; a brother, Arthur Owen; his father, Daniel Owen; and his mother, Bertha Owen.

Survivors include a son, Brian D. Owen of Silvercreek; a daughter, Marsha O. Gill of Shreveport, LA; his wife, Mary T. Owen of Waterproof; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church of Waterproof Sunday School Class and Steve Bonnette.

Manson Emery Nelson Sr.

April 29, 1938 - July 18, 2003

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Manson Emery Nelson Sr., 65, of Vidalia, who died Friday, July 18, 2003, in New Orleans, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Ledford officiating.

Burial will follow in New Pine Hill cemetery in Sicily Island under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Nelson was born April 29, 1938, in Jonesville, the son of Matthew T. and Tressie R. Nelson.

He owned Professional Carpet Cleaners in Vidalia and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He was a graduate of Ferriday High School, where he played football under Coach Red Robertson on the state championship team. He also played football on the Louisiana State University football team and played on the Chinese Bandits under Coach Paul Dietzel.

He coached football in several areas around Louisiana. He held a master's degree in mathematics. He was a past president of the Concordia Parish School Board and was a lifelong resident of Concordia Parish.

Survivors include his wife, Judy C. Nelson; two sons, Manson E. "Mannie" Nelson Jr. of Vidalia and Doug Henthorne of Praitirsburg, W. Va.; four daughters, Dr. Debbie Guillory of Ferriday, Tracie Swilley and Diana Stafford, both of Natchez, and Joyce McCarty of Vidalia; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Margaret Zeagler of Sicily Island, Shirley Mortimor and Pam Nelson, both of of Baton Rouge, Katherine Smith of Prairieville and Polly Johnson of Wisner.

Pallbearers will be Manson Nelson Jr., Steve Zeagler, Steve Cutlip, Joe Smith, Raymond Zeagler, Mike McCarty, Phillip Coats and Martin "Coot" Swilley.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Calvary Baptist Church, Tony Guillory, Coach Red Robertson, Neal Minor, Dr. Jack Rodriguez, Dr. Geoffrey Flattman, Dr. Tommy Purvis, Hubert Lee McGlothin, Pete Swilley, Shelby Zeagler and his grandsons.

Leo Quinn

Dec. 10, 1946 - July 15, 2003

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Leo Quinn, 56, of Ferriday, who died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at V.A. Medical Center in Alexandria, La., will be at 10 a.m. Monday at New Morning Star Baptist Church in Ferriday with the Rev. Johnnie Hollins officiating.

Burial will be in the National cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Quinn was born Dec. 10, 1946, in Ferriday, the son of Curtis Quinn and Willie Mae Thomas.

He was a disable veteran having served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Angeline Hawkins Quinn of Ferriday; six sons, Lee Quinn and Joshua Huddleston of Ferriday, Leo Quinn Jr. of Pineville, La., Thavain Quinn of Cleveland, OH, Patrick Beverly of Las Vegas, NV and Donnuel Huddleston of Jacksonville, FL; three daughters, Tywanda Quinn of Ferriday, Katrina Washington of Shreveport, La. and Sharon Beverly of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers, Dennis Quinn of St. Petersburg, FL and Roy W. Quinn of Houston, TX; two sisters, Joy Q. Woodruff of Ferriday and Dora Rowan of Monroe, La.; and 20 grandchildren.

Robert "Pickett" Tinson Jr.

Sept. 8, 1953 - July 12, 2003

WATERPROOF, La. - Services for Robert "Pickett" Tinson Jr., 49, of New Orleans, La. formerly of Waterproof, who died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the New Orleans Rehab Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Choctaw Chapel Baptist Church in Waterproof with the Rev. Frank Brown officiating.

Burial will be in Pinhook cemetery in St. Joseph, La. under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Tinson was born Sept. 8, 1953, in Newellton, La., the son of Robert Tinson Sr. and Rosetta Jordan Green.

He was a teacher's aide.

Survivors include his mother, Rosetta J. Green of New Orleans; three brothers, Lee E. Tinson of Baton Rouge, Mark and Travis Moore of New Orleans; two sisters, Judy Scott and Robin McKinnies of New Orleans; one aunt, two uncles and one great-aunt.

Dewitt Roy Carpenter

Jan. 20, 1928 - July 14, 2003

JONESVILLE, La. - Services for Dewitt Roy Carpenter, 75, of Jonesville, who died Monday, July 14, 2003, at his residence, will be at 10 a.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Jonesville with the Rev. Jessie Watkins and the Rev. Mickey Hudnall officiating.

Burial will be in Heard cemetery in Manifest, La. under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of Jonesville.

Mr. Carpenter was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Jonesville.

He was a former employee of the U.S. Army Crops. of Engineers, established Carpenter Tractor Company in 1964, was a retired farmer and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was past president and former board member of National Farm Dealers Association, a 50 year member of Masonic Western Star Lodge 24, past member of Federal Land Bank and a WWII Navel veteran. Mr. Carpenter was an avid golfer, a licensed pilot and a member of Panola Woods Country Club.

Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Lee Carpenter and his mother, Clara Carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Elizabeth Carpenter of Jonesville; two sons, Dewitt Lee Carpenter and his wife, Theresa and David Wayne Carpenter, all of Jonesville; three daughters, Kay C. Venable and her husband, Hollis of Jackson, Pamela C. Wood and her husband, Gary of Ferriday, La. and Denise C. Campbell and her husband, Dennis of Maumelle, Ark.; one sister, Bobbie Nell Rouse of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren, James "Trey" Whilman, Alicia Kay Wood, Russell Wayne Wood, Allison Lauren Short, Kyle Addison Short, Dewitt Lee Carpenter Jr., Clara Courtney Carpenter, Corbin Lowery Carpenter, Colton Snow Carpenter, Joseph Teal Carpenter and Phillip David Carpenter.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be his Sunday School Class.

The family requests memorials be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or Parkinson Research Foundation.
