VELMA DOUGLAS
Velma Jean Douglas, 78, widow of Earl Douglas, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Feb. 1, 1933 in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Shelton and Bessie Beatrice Hafley Russell. She was a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter: Becky (Marty) Milburn of Harrodsburg; a son: William Shelton Douglas of San Francisco, CA; a brother: Gilbert Russell of Hustonville; and three sisters: June Allison of Gallatin, TN., Mary Ann Reeves of Danville and Helen Vanoy of Junction City; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Elmer Thomas and Ray Shelton Russell.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Ernest Martin and Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: David Reeves, Brian Vanoy, Randall Russell, Tyler Wash, Bobby Reeves and Timothy Combs.
CHARLES FOLEY
Charles William Foley, 67, of Danville, formerly of Winchester and Louisville, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg.
Born May 31, 1943, in Louisville, he was a son of the late Charles Watson and Violet Ecton Foley.
Bill, as known by many, was a retired consultant. He also was a former employee for the Joseph Griffin Company in Louisville, which was a trade show and convention company. Chuck, also known as by many, worked in the family Jerry’s Restaurant business as a manager in his early years. He also was involved with the family farm in Winchester. Charlie Bill, yet another of his various nicknames, was proud of his involvement with the Boy Scouts, where he was himself an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He was a member of the NRA and former member of the Danville Rotary Club, as well as many other civic organizations and committees in and around Danville and Louisville. He also was a member of the First Christian Church in Danville. He was a Kentucky Colonel and attended the University of Kentucky. He was thus an avid UK fan.
Survivors include his dear wife, Bonnie Jean Nix Foley; son, David L. (Wendi) Foley of Lexington; step-son, Louis J. (Dana) Payton, Sr. of Louisville; granddaughter, Kathleen M. Foley; and step-grandchildren, Hannah, Louis, Jr., Jamison, Jacob, Hailey, and Chase.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Dr. Jerry Shepard and Rev. Odis Clark officiating with a short reception following at the funeral home. Burial will be privately in Winchester Cemetery.
Dave Hussung, Jimmy Taulbee, Putney Guerrant, Louis Payton, Sr., Louis Payton, Jr., Roger Washburn, Ron Melton, and Danny Arvin served as the pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association.
BEATRICE LENIHAN
Beatrice Moore Lenihan, 93, of Brentwood, TN, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 in Franklin, TN.
Born in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Laura Warner Moore.
She is survived by: one daughter, Betty Jane Bloemer of Lexington; a grandson, Bernie (Melissa) Bloemer of Nashville, TN; and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Shelby Bloemer.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 9, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington.

RALPH LYNN
Ralph “Bill” Lynn, 83, of Frankfort, died Monday, February 07, 2011.
He was born in Frankfort on August 27, 1927 to the late Henry and Anna-Liza Reardon Lynn.
He was a retired employee of Marcus Furniture and a member of Family Worship Center.
He is survived by: his wife, Ruth H. Lynn of Frankfort; three daughters, Sandra (Tom) Robinson of Midway, E. Hope Schmitt Lynn and Regina Lynn (Paul, Jr.) Hellard, both of Frankfort; two sons, Mike Lynn of Harrodsburg and Ralph David (Beate) Lynn of Frankfort; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and four sisters, Helen Ethington, Mary May Hall of Liberty, Isabelle Dean of Texas , and Erma Lynn of Frankfort.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, one granddaughter, one sister, and four brothers.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, February 11, at the Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road, Frankfort, with Reverend Tony Andrade officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Casketbearers will be Mr. Lynn’s grandsons.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Donations may be made in his honor to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
LESTER MADDOX
Lester E. Maddox, 79, of Parksville (Carpenter’s Creek), widower of Lela Singleton Maddox, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011.
Born March 4, 1931, he was the son of the late Sam and Ora Southerland Maddox.
He was a farmer and from 1960-66, owned and operated Maddox grocery. He was a US Army Sgt. and a tank operator during the Korean War. He was a charter member of Forkland Community Center and of Butchertown Community Center, and had been treasure of National Farmer’s Organization. He attended Pleasant Run Baptist and Butchertown Baptist Church. Lester enjoyed fishing, hunting, rook, checkers and spending time at the creek side.
He is survived by: three sons, Dewayne (Nancy) Maddox of Harrodsburg, Maurice (Ravonne) Maddox of Mitchellsburg, and Troy (Rita) Maddox of Stanford; two sisters, Pearl Davis and Violet Minton; seven grandchildren, Nick, Levi, Chrissy, Adam and Samantha Maddox and John Thomas and Corey Edwards; and four great grandchildren, Reagan, Havannah, Sadie and Savannah.
Services were conducted Sunday, February 6, at the W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland by Bro. Stacy Wilson with burial in Hustonville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Nick, Levi, Adam, Chrissy and Samantha Maddox, John Thomas and Corey Edwards, and Rick Stephens.
Honorary pallbearers were Chester Shepperson, Morris Martin, Eugene Pike, Danny Pike, Randy Williams and Mike Maddox.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions suggested to Butchertown or Forkland Community Centers.
LOUIS MCFATRIDGE
Louis Forsythe McFatridge Jr., 84, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2011 at the Thomson Hood Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, Wilmore.
Born Sept. 30, 1926 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Louis F. and Jonnie (Elkin) McFatridge. He was an Army veteran of WW II, received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky and was a retired builder. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.
He is survived by a brother: Robert McFatridge of Harrodsburg; and a niece: Rita Lawson.
He was preceded in death by three sisters: Ann Hunter Cardini, Joyce Conover and Leanore Dean.
The memorial service at Ransdell Funeral Chapel has been postponed. It will be announced at a later date.
WALLACE MEAUX
Wallace Meaux, Jr. , 79, died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg.
He was the son of the late Wallace, Sr. and Sarah Bell Meaux, born on June 7, 1931 In Danville, Kentucky. Preceding him in death, one sister, Dorothy Trumbo, three brothers, Arthur Lee Meaux, Charles Edward Meaux and Jimmy Meaux.
Wallace leaves to cherish his memories; one daughter, Lisa Logan; one grandson, Damian Logan; three sisters, Florence Meaux, Dora Davis and Eugenia Carpenter; two brothers, Samuel (Mary S. ) Meaux and Richard Meaux, all of Danville; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Service was held Tuesday, February 8, at the Smith-Jackson Funeral Home in Danville.
JAMES PORTWOOD
James E. “Jimmy” Portwood, 89, retired security and horse farm employee, died Tuesday, February 1 at the Golden Living Center in Frankfort.
Although he was a resident of Fayette Co. most of his life, he was born in Midway, was a son of the late James Edward and Lida Mae Mullins Portwood and was a Baptist.
Survivors include: his daughter, Glenda (David) Penn of Millville; three sisters, Mildred Jean Johnston of Woodford County, Dorothy Helen Lacefield of Mercer County and Betty Woodrum of Jessamine County; a sister-in-law, Dixie Portwood of Midway; three grandchildren, David A. (Kim) Penn, Darryl W. Penn, Delana Moore; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, James E. Portwood Jr., and two brothers, Armand Portwood and Kenneth Portwood.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Friday, February 4, at the Midway Cemetery
with Rev. Jeff Douglas officiating.
Pallbearers were grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association.
CECIL THURMAN
Cecil Thurman, 88, widower of Pauline Bailey Thurman, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.
Born Oct. 18, 1922 in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Murphy and Myrtle Huffman Thurman. He was a retired supervisor for the Kentucky Department of Transportation and a member of the Anderson Christian Church.
He is survived by two sons: Bobby (Sandy) Thurman of Lawrenceburg and Kelly Wayne Thurman of Harrodsburg; three daughters: Bonnie (Paul) Crouch of Lawrenceburg, Kaye Woods and Faye Price, both of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A private funeral service will be held at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Doug Simpson officiating.
CHARLES TURNER
Charles E. Turner, 80, of Mackville, husband of Wilma Elliott Turner, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
Born Sept. 11, 1930 in DeKalb, IL, he was the son of the late Harry and Juanita Royalty Turner. He was a member of the Thompsonville Baptist Church, a farmer, a self-employed contractor and a veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Leland and Lynden Turner of Mackville; a brother: Norman (Betty) Turner of Springfield; a sister: Brenda Russell of Harrodsburg; one nephew and two nieces.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 at Carey and Son Funeral Home, Springfield, with Rev. Bobby Chesser and Rev. Will Brooks officiating. Burial was in Peter Cemetery, Mackville.
Pallbearers were: Carlton Shewmaker, Amos Sharp, G. B. Royalty, Sherrill Baker, Kevin Isham and Allen Mann.
Honorary pallbearers were: Billy Yankey, Glenn Arnold, Paul Rice, Donnie Rogers, Trent Roy, Ray Cox, Jr. Robinson, Tom Cundiff, Al Stevens, Charlie Fields and Paul Chumley.
LOYDIE CHUMBLEY
Loydie Ethel Gossett Chumbley, 90, widow of Elvert Chumbley, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born July 2, 1920 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Rass Manford and Viola Eastham Gossett. She was retired from the Boyle County School system and a member of Salt River Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son: Leonard (Patricia) Chumbley of Harrodsburg; three daughters: Ethel Kendall of Somerset, Olene (Ed) Dials of Lady Lake, FL and Janet (Damon) Young of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Lowell Chumbley and a daughter, Linda Anderson.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Lowell Gossett officiating. Burial was in Birdie Russell Cemetery
in Casey County.
Pallbearers were: Adam Chumbley, Jared Cocanougher, Phillip Chumbley, Shane Noel, Hunter Kendrick, Dustin Anderson, Lucas Noel and Toby Chumbley.
ELIZABETH DICKSON
Elizabeth “Betty” Ruth Edwards Dickson, 88, widow of Norwood Hall Dickson Jr., died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011.
Born in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late James Donald and Frances Ruth Edwards. She served during WWII as a Navy WAVE in New Orleans and had a career as a legal secretary in Washington , DC and Lexington.
She is survived by her children: Philip Hall Dickson, Lexington; Bettina Dickson (James) Rusher, Versailles and Mary Frances (Douglas Reed) Dickson Pacifica, CA; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011) 3:30 p.m. at the Lexington Cemetery.
Visitation is today (Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011) from 2 to 3 p.m. at Milward Funeral Services-Broadway, Lexington.
A celebration reception will be held at Merrick Inn, Lexington, today (Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011) 4:30 p.m.
