ANNE NOOE
Anne Witherspoon Nooe (Mrs. Roger Mitchell Nooe, Sr.) passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 12, 2010 in Ormond Beach, Florida at her son, Franklin’s home. Mrs. Nooe celebrated her 91st birthday on November 30th of this year. In declining health for the past few years, Anne enjoyed long winter visits with Franklin and his family. She was a life-long member of Harrodsburg Christian Church. Anne enjoyed travel during her long and productive life; however, her heart never strayed far from her beloved hometown of Harrodsburg and Mercer County. Once in London, England her daughter overheard mom asking a police “bobby,” have you ever had the privilege of visiting my hometown of Harrodsburg, Kentucky?” Anne was the daughter of Martin and Margaret Witherspoon Walker. After the death of her mother when Anne was age two years, she went to live with an aunt, “Mama Julia.” She grew up in Harrodsburg and lived all but four years of he life in the Witherspoon family homeplace. She described her life as a youngster as “a charmed life, sheltered and protected by the loving arms of Mother Julia and Daddy John I.”
In 1936, Anne married her high school beau, Roger Mitchell Nooe, Sr., and together they reared three children. She valued family highly and hosted many family dinners and always welcomed her children’s friends into her home. she was a fulltime homemaker, creating a productive and active life for her family, but also finding time to work at the Louisville Store, Fort Harrod and auctions to help support her family. With her deeply held value of service to others, she also accepted numerous volunteer assignments. She served as Scout Den Mother, PTA President, Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) coordinator, Women’s Club member, volunteer at Kentucky State Hospital and engaged in numerous service activities. Throughout her adult life, long before consignment shops became popular Anne recognized the practical value of sharing food and recycling clothing, household goods and toys. She had an unbelievable skill for mating items with people’s needs.
After her children left for the college studies, she became an employee of the Southern Bluegrass Comprehensive Care Center and decided to attend college at the University of Kentucky, Somerset extension site where she earned an Associate Degree in social work. At the Comprehensive Care Center, she was dedicated to helping develop and operate “Rainbow House” a partial hospitalization or day care facility for persons with severe and persistence mental illness. She always conveyed a strong sense of empathy and was a tireless advocate for “my people.”
Throughout her productive and satisfying career, Anne developed a number of innovative and successful programs. A favorite was the Community Appreciation Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by the Comprehensive Care Center. This dinner grew in attendance “from preparing two turkeys’ to feeding as many as 400 guests including clients, community residents, heath providers and elected officials.
For her tireless efforts, Mrs. Nooe received many local and statewide recognitions and awards ranging from Kentucky Colonel to declaration of the “Anne Nooe Day” in 2009. Perhaps most meaningful was the Rainbow House being renamed “The Anne Nooe Therapeutic Rehabilitation Center.”
In addition to her professional life, Anne was passionate about her hobbies. At 83 years of age, she continued to ride her bicycle to work, regardless of weather. When a swimming pool was available, Anne swam regularly, often pushing the season into late October. She was an avid bridge player; family folklore has it that Anne would not schedule carpal tunnel surgery until she accidentally dropped the ace of spades confirming a need for the operation.
Children and animals held a special place in Anne’s heart. Her house was filled with toys and she delighted in children’s visits. Her Samoyed dogs, always named Cossack, were well treated. She enjoyed her home and its abundance of flowers and in her later years especially loved sitting on the porch visiting with friends. She enjoyed politics and stayed current regarding local and national events. She was once described as having never met a Kentucky newspaper that she didn’t like. She routinely quoted the Harrodsburg Herald, Lexington Herald and Courier Journal.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nooe was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Mitchell Nooe, Sr., grandson, R. Mitchell Nooe, III, and brother Martin Edward Walker. Mrs. Nooe is survived by three children, Roger M. Nooe Jr. and wife Carol of Knoxville, Tennessee, Julia Anne Nooe, of Asheville, North Carolina and Franklin Witherspoon Nooe and Sue Line of Ormond Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Lindsay Anne Nooe Harrell, M. D. and husband David Harrell, M. D. in Knoxville, Ashley Nooe Castotena in Ormond Beach, Anne Olsen and Mark Olsen in Asheville, Evan Nooe and Darin Nooe in Ormond Beach; and five great grand children, James Matthew, Miriam Virginia, and Madeline Jane Harrell, Thalia Ariana and Mya Illiana Castorena; three nieces, Shirley Walker, Jean Miller and Elizabeth Hulette, and special friends Delmer and Delores Odell.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 Monday evening, December 27, 2010 in the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.
