FRANCES GIANNOTTI

Frances Paula Hale Giannotti, died Sep 11, 2010 in Oklahoma City, OK at age 70.

She was born Jan 24, 1940 to the late Edward Carroll Hale and Frances Vertuca Hale.

She graduated from St. Paul Elementary School, Lexington Catholic High School (1957) and Ursuline College, Louisville, (1961). Paula was a teacher in Lexington for several years. She taught at St. Paul's and then at Lexington Catholic High School until 1968. Paula worked for a year at University of Kentucky Medical Center directing activities for the children's ward.

She is survived by: her husband, Vincent Giannotti; her son, Vincent Thaddeus Giannotti; her daughter, Francesca Giannotti Gragg (Kevin); and two grandchildren, J. T. and Danielle Gragg, all of Stillwater, OK. In addition, she is survived by: two sisters, Monica Hale Kehrt (Thomas) of Harrodsburg and Janis Hale of Lexington; two brothers, Edward Carroll Hale (Marsha Barbour) of Richmond and John David Hale (Oresta Maly) of Lexington. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, E. C. Hale III (Sarah) of Roanoke, VA; Cecilia Hale Wanchic (John) of Bloomington, IN; Marsha Hale Fight (Zachary) of Madisonville; Laura Hale Donovan (Patrick) of Lexington; Michael Hale (Kimberly) and Patrick Hale, both, hf Richmond; Brian Hale (Lara) of Bethesda, MD; Mira Hale of Atlanta, GA; Christopher Kehrt of Harrodsburg; Stephanie Kehrt, of Burgin; Matthew Kehrt (Sarah) of New York, NY; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Paula is also survived by her beloved aunts, Leda Vertuca Wojtowicz of Novelty, OH, Lohoma Creech Vertuca of Lexington; Frances Holland Vertuca of Lima, OH, and Carmela Vertuca of DeBary, FL.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul's Catholic Church, 501 West Short St, Lexington. A reception will follow in Sat. Paul's Ave Maria Building.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude's Hospital.

BILLY JOHNSON

Billy Joe Johnson, 45, of Danville died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at his residence. Born March 2, 1965 in Mercer County, he was the son of John and Betty Harrison Johnson. He was a carpet installer and worked for a tree service. He was a member of the Harrodsburg United Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his parents Billy is survived by three children: Matthew Louallen of Salvisa, Jennifer (Matt) McGinnis and B.J. Johnson both of Harrodsburg, two brothers: Kenny Johnson of Louisville and Johnny Johnson of Danville, sisters: Shirley (Wendell) Anderson of Harrodsburg and Pauline (Curtiss) Holmes Danville, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Benny Johnson.

Funeral services were conducted Oct. 17, 2010 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Gardens with Johnny Johnson, Blake Lopez, Shae Anderson, Josh Johnson, Michael Louallen and Shawn Bozeman serving as Pallbearers.

MARTHA POWERS

Martha Nixon Powers, 77, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 in Ellicott City, MD. She was born on April 30, 1933 and was the daughter of Frank Leslie Powers of Augusta and Elizabeth Tobin Powers of Harrodsburg.

She is survived by her brother Frank Leslie Powers of Niceville, FL, her daughter Leslie Elizabeth Waters of Ellicott City, MD, her son Bradford Waters of Germantown, TN, three grandchildren and two cousins.

Funeral services will be at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

The family requests donations in her name to be given to the Home of the Innocents, 1100 E Market Street, Louisville, KY 40206-1838

THOMAS RAKESTRAW

Thomas Lee Rakestraw, Jr., 49, of Lawrenceburg, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He was born on April 12, 1961 in Battle Creek, MI. He was an electrician with Straw’s Electric and a member of Alton Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Carolyn Joyce Ford and Thomas Lee Rakestraw, Sr., of Lawrenceburg, he is survived by two daughters, Jessica (Bo) Shewmaker of Harrodsburg and Ashley Elizabeth Rakestraw of Lawrenceburg, a son James Rakestraw of Harrodsburg, sister Julia Rakestraw of Lawrenceburg, two brothers, Richard (Regina) Rakestraw of Mayfield, and Mike (Donna) Rakestraw of Lawrenceburg, two grandchildren, and 12 nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted Oct. 19, 2010 at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Rick Shannon officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tom Sullivan, Steve Preston, Robert Wiley, Jeff Stevens, Steve Fields, and Jason Rakestraw.

Honorary bearers were Bob Muggy, Steve Freeman, Buddy Preston, Daniel Preston, and Nick Rakestraw.

BEULAH SMOCK

Beulah Key Smock, 100, Moreland Ave, Harrodsburg, widow of John Thomas Smock, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born April 27, 1910 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late G. W. and Flora (Russell) Key. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include: a daughter: Lillian Clements of Harrodsburg, and a son: William (Louise) Smock of Salvisa, Daughter-in-law, Judy Smock of Harrodsburg; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; Two step great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son: Wallace Aaron Smock and four brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. The services will be officiated by James Harley and burial will be in the Deep Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Gary Clements, Zachary Clements, Michael Smith, David Smock, Jackie Key, George Key and Terrell Simpson.

Visitation will be Wednesday after 5 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to Relay for Life Cancer Fund in honor of Wallace Smock.

RALPH TRAYNER

Ralph E Trayner, 77, Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 at the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. His wife, Betty Meredith Trayner, preceded him in death.

Born June 4, 1933 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Loyd and Lillian (Rogers) Trayner. He served during the Korean War in the Army. He was an IBM manager and a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: two sons: Mark and Chip Trayner; two sisters: Linda Preston and Betty Jo McMichael all of Harrodsburg; one brother: Carroll Trayner of Pompano Beach, FL; and three grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Robert Barton officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Bobby Catlett, Shane Trayner, Seth Trayner, Dan Walls, Brian Kelty and James Wheeler.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Mercer Humane Society.

RUSSELL TAYLOR

Russell Taylor, 50, of Somerset, KY, departed this life on Thursday, October 14, 2010.

He was born on March 7, 1960 in Rockcastle County, to the late Denver and Mildred Imogene Whitaker Taylor.

Mr. Taylor was a truck driver for Garner Trucking Company and a member of Floyd Switch Baptist Church. He loved horses.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Peggy Carrier Taylor, whom he married on April 9, 1998 in Harrodsburg; a son, Daniel Keith of Eubank; five daughters, Renee Taylor of Eubank, Alicia Estridge of Mt. Vernon, Anita Dishon Ledbetter of Somerset, Tammy Stifanick of Burnside, and Sondra (Keith) Brent of Waynesburg; a brother, Linn (Joann)Taylor of Shopville; a sister, Barbara (Joey) Hines of Eubank; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces; and sister-in-law, Sandra Taylor of Somerset.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Denver Lee and Ray Taylor.

Funeral service was held Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. J. S. New officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers for Mr. Taylor were James Marriott, Eric Derringer, Dustin Marcum, Frankie Burkett, Dewayne Gossett and Ricky Lee.

CHRISTINE BECKNELL

Christine Carroll Becknell, 91, widow of Clarence Becknell died Friday, October 22, 2010 at her home.

She was born April 7, 1919 in Jessamine County to the late Bolivar C. and Julia Ann Shyrock Carroll.

Christine was a homemaker and member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Survivors are: two sons, Bobby and Wayne (Linda) Becknell; three grandchildren, Greg (Veronica) Becknell, Laura (“Pacer”) Metzenberg and Kevin (Marsha) Becknell, all of Nicholasville; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rosa Mae Strange of Nicholasville, Helen Strange of Wilmore and Marie Jordan of Nicholasville; one brother, Bolivar D. “Sonny” Carroll of Harrodsburg and other family members.

Services were held Tuesday, October 26, at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Becknell and Rev. Basil Hall officiating. Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Bearers were Greg, Kevin and Bryan Becknell, “Pacer” Metzenberg, Marion Williams and Sam Hughes.

Contributions suggested to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

DENNIS BLACKBURN

Dennis Blackburn, age 55, Harrodsburg, husband of Patricia Collinsworth Blackburn, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 in Harrodsburg.

Born July 9, 1955 in Bethesda, MD, he was the son of Buford and Lil (Williamson) Blackburn. He served in the Navy and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He was a retired Captain of the Lexington Fire Department after 24 of years service. He was also a Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout, involved over forty years with Boy Scouts of America, Pinto Organization of Kentucky (POOKy), Vice President of Central Kentucky Back Country Horsemen and founding member of the Fort Harrod Back Country Horsemen, board member and head of the Trail Consultation Group as a certified Trail Design and Construction Specialist for the Kentucky Horse Council, Chief of Operations for Kentucky Large Animal Rescue Team, Master Educator at Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, Fire Science and Rescue Degree Course Instructor for Bluegrass Community Technical College, Volunteer Fireman, Cornishville Fire Department, was active in 4H Club Horse Program and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), and an active horseback trail rider.

Survivors other than his parents include: two sons, Samuel Blackburn of Harrodsburg, and Johnathan Blackburn of Odessa, TX; one sister, Devonna (Doug) Hisel of McKee and two brothers, David (Pam) Blackburn of Nicholasville, Dale (Kathy) Blackburn of Corvallis, OR.

Services were held Monday, October 25 at the Harrodsburg Christian Church and officiated by Lester Tirey. He was buried in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Ransdell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA BLACKBURN

Patricia C. Blackburn, age 55, Harrodsburg, wife of Dennis Blackburn, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 in Harrodsburg.

Born March 7, 1955 in Georgetown, she was the daughter of Ann (Schreiner) Collinsworth and the late William Collinsworth. She was a surgical technician at Central Baptist Hospital for over 20 years and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she was a choir member and past youth leader. She was Past President of the Pinto Organization of Kentucky (POOKy), member of Central Kentucky Back Country Horsemen, Kentucky Horse Council Volunteer, Boy Scouts of America; active in 4H Club Horse Program and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).

Survivors other than her mother include: two sons: Samuel Blackburn of Harrodsburg and Johnathan Blackburn of Odessa, TX; two sisters, Debbie Collinsworth (Ben, deceased) Osborne and Linda (Tom) Coots all of Georgetown and a cousin.

Funeral services were Oct. 25 at the Harrodsburg Christian Church, officiated by Lester Tirey. Burial was in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Ransdell Funeral was in charge of the arrangements.

DONNA CHESSER

Donna K. Chesser, age 45, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Shelbyville, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at her residence.

She is survived by her husband, David Eugene Chesser of Springfield; two sons, David Chesser of Shelby County and Charles Chesser of Springfield; one daughter, Amy Lanham of Springfield; and her father; Franklin Delano McIntosh of Finchville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 23, at Sholar Funeral Home of Pleasureville, Ky. Tina Standiford officiated.

Interment was in Defoe Cemetery.

THURMAN HARDIN

Thurman Hardin 86, husband of the late Virginia McGinnis Hardin, of Burgin died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. He was born July 16, 1924 in Mercer County, to the late Andrew and Betsy Currens Hardin. Mr. Hardin was a farmer.

Survivors include one brother, Charles A. Hardin of Harrodsburg. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Services were conducted Sunday, Oct. 24, at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lester Tirey officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Rich McGinnis, Ronnie McGinnis, Eddie McGinnis, Brent McGinnis, Donnie Webb, Robert C. Vanarsdall serving as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers were Danny Noel, Ralph Culp and Ralph Culp, Sr.

CHARLES PINKSTON

Charles Robert Pinkston, 65, of Springfield, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at the Springview Hospital in Lebanon. Born Oct. 23, 1944 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Ray and Maxine Ashton Pinkston. He was a retired factory worker at Inoac, was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, U.K. Basketball and playing Rook.

Survivors include two daughters: Lisha (Doug) Davis of Nashville, TN, and Andrea (Billy) Hooper of Springfield. Two brothers, Earl W. (Barbara) Pinkston of Danville and Steve D. (Kim) Pinkston of Harrodsburg. Three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers Donald and Larry Pinkston.

A private service was held for family and friends.

AMANDA WATTS

Amanda Gwen Watts, 31, wife of John Shannon Watts, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born March 30, 1979 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of Mike and Joyce Sparks Scull. She was a 1997 graduate of Mercer County High School, a former employee at Judy’s Networking, a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, and was presently attending Kirkwood Baptist Church.

Amanda enjoyed scrapbooking, swimming, riding roller coasters, and watching her sons play sports.

Other than her husband and parents, Amanda is survived by her two sons Michael Dylon Sagracy and Khristian Tyler Sagracy, both of Harrodsburg. Her maternal grandmother Alice Sparks of Harrodsburg, one brother Michael Scull of Salvisa, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Services were conducted at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Stewart Dawson officiating. She was buried in Kirkwood Baptist Church Cemetery with Jeff Estes, Brandon Wilham, Logan Hall, Stephen Coslow, Jason Bagan and Rick Kirkpatrick serving as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers were Larry Lyons, Todd Sagracy, Clinton Voris and Keith Driscoll.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mercer Relay for Life, P.O. Box 411, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

LIZZIE BAXTER

Lizzie Jane Willard Baxter, 87, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center.

She was born in Anderson County to the late Allie Green and Exie Jane Brown Willard. She was the widow of Carl Baxter. She was a member of Corinth Christian Church, a homemaker and a former volunteer with the Anderson County Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Montgomery, Salvisa; two sons, John Earl (Frances) Baxter, Winchester, and Robert Willard (Betty) Baxter, Shepherdsville; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Lois Duncan and Linda Montgomery; a son, William Carl Baxter; two sisters, Mecia Buntain and Irene Cooper; three brothers, J.B., Haskell and Kenneth Willard and two grandsons.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Matt Sawyer officiating. Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
