GREGORY GRIFFIN

Gregory Griffin, 59, Springfield, OH, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the Springfield Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Born October 5, 1950 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Emma Mae Griffin, Harrodsburg and the late George Griffin Sr.

He was a 1968 graduate of Harrodsburg, served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was a teacher in the Springfield City Schools.

Survivors, other that his mother, include: his wife, Cynthia Griffin; two sons; Anthony (Kimberly) Mack and Neil Griffin; one daughter, Ashley Griffin, all of Springfield; two brothers, William Griffin, Harrodsburg and Larry Griffin, Columbus, OH; two sisters, Yvonne Griffin, Chattanooga, TN and Sarah Griffin, Harrodsburg; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 12 noon Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield, OH. Burial was in the Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield.

Arrangements provided by the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home, 527 South Center Street, Springfield, OH 45506 – Phone (937) 322-8520.

DOROTHY HAYS

Dorothy Moore Hays, 73, of Pearland, TX, wife of Charles Hays, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.

She was born March 9, 1937 in Woodford County to the late Earl Griggs and Enola Foley Moore, Sr. She was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Griggs Moore, Jr.

Survivors include: a son, Charles Courtney Hays of Pasadena, CA; a daughter, Brenda Hanzik of Pearland, TX; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include her sister-in-law, Lois Moore and three nieces, all of Harrodsburg.

Memorial services were held in Pearland, TX.

VERNA RESS

Verna Mae Allen Ress, 84, of Ashland City, died Sept. 3, 2010. She was a native of the Rose Hill Community of Mercer County and a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, FL until 2006 when she and her late husband Ernest E. Resse, moved to Clarksville, TN to be closer to her daughter. She is survived by: one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Rev. Richard Smith of Richmond; two daughters Teresa (Mike) Tuttle of Ashland City, TN and June (Gary) Jordan of NC; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven nephews and five nieces.

Funeral services were held at Forest Lawn Chapel with Rev. E.G. Simms officiating. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends served as Pallbearers. A remembrance donation may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mid-South Chapter, 4205 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 216, Nashville, TN 37215.

JOSEPH RHORER

Joseph Dwayne Rhorer, 42, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at his home.

Born August 29, 1968 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, he was the son of the late Gene and Irene (Wafford) Rhorer. He was a fencing contractor.

Survivors include: a daughter: Mary Marie Brown; a sister: Jessica Buskey; three cousins and two uncles. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 23 at the World’s Town Church of God in Junction City.

DANIEL SCOTT II

Daniel W. Scott II, owner of the Dan W. Scott Farm, a thoroughbred nursery and commercial breeding operation on Russell Cave Pike near Lexington, died on September 3, 2010. He was 94.

Mr. Scott operated Dan W. Scott Farm since 1947. He bred nine stakes winners, eight solely and one in partnership.

He was born near Harrodsburg, KY on Jan 18, 1916 and came from a long line of Kentucky horsemen. His father, Harrie B. Scott, was a founder of Keeneland Association and managed Faraway Farm, where Man o' War and War Admiral stood, and bred eight stakes winners. He was the grandson of Daniel W. Scott, one-time Fayette County sheriff who bred 11 stakes winners. Mr. Scott attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis for one year. He then attended the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, graduating in 1937 with a degree in Commerce. After college, he worked for General Electric for a brief period before returning to Lexington to begin his career in the thoroughbred industry. During World War II, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was President of the Thoroughbred Club of America in 1951-1952, was a lifetime member of Keeneland Association, and a founding member of the Idle Hour Country Club.

Mr. Scott is survived by: his brother, Harry B. Scott Jr.; two sons, Daniel W. Scott III and Wade Thornton Scott; stepdaughter, Anne B. MacLean; stepson, Louis H. Beard; grandchildren, Stephanie S. Leichtweis, Daniel W. Scott IV, Lucile B. Scott and J. Barton Scott; step-grandchildren, Michele M. Thomas, Frederick R. MacLean Jr, Tracy M. McCarver, David M. Beard, Brian C. Beard, Kelly A. Beard, and Kevin M. Beard; two great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grand children.

Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Alice Hollister Scott. His first wife, Lucile Thornton Blazer, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, at the Christ Church Cathedral, 166 Market Place.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association or the Keeneland Foundation.

DANELSSA VAZQUEZ

Danelssa Garcia Vazquez, 27, of Harrodsburg, wife of Israel Vazquez, died Saturday Sept. 11, 2010. She was a native of Mexico and the daughter of Daniel and Estefana Perez Garcia of Harrodsburg.

Other survivors include: two children: Dassaell and Darnell Vazquez both at home, one brother: Andres Garcia of Harrodsburg; paternal grandfather; Macedorio Garcia; maternal grandparents: Fernando Perez Callejas and Francisca Cerano all of Mexico.

Services were at the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Clemente’ Hernandez and Brother John David Lane.

ELSIE BALLES

Elsie Steigerwald Balles, 89, of Lexington, died Tuesday September 14, 2010.

She was born in Coraopolis, PA on December 19, 1920, the daughter of the late Charles and Matilda Steigerwald.

A homemaker for most of her life, she had mastered the art of cooking and baking, a tireless nurse to her husband and children, seamstress, gardener and mother to all she knew. A woman of humble means, she always had a smile, hug, kind word and another plate at the dinner table for everyone, never asking for anything in return. She taught by example that peace and happiness comes from your heart and deep faith in God, not from monetary wealth. Her Catholic faith guided her through the ups and downs of life. She had a deep love for animals and the natural world and instilled this in her children. She found no more joy than in being with her family, pets, reading, gardening, or mowing grass on her small farm in Salvisa.

She was an active member for many years of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Harrodsburg.

She leaves behind: her children, Charles J. Balles Sr, Lexington, Dr. John Balles of Temecula, CA, Peter J. (Debra C) Balles, Salvisa, and Mary (Dr. John) Dailey of Muncie, IN

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles J. Balles Sr, and her sisters, June VonHofen of Moon Township, PA and Dorothy (Dottie) Eckert of Shaefferstown, PA.

A private family service is planned.

Any remembrance in her honor please forward to St. Andrew Catholic Church, Harrodsburg, KY or to Hospice of the Bluegrass, Lexington, KY.

ELSIE FREEMAN

Elsie Freeman, 89, Harrodsburg, widow of Edwin Freeman, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 21, 1921 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Minnie (Devine) Kirkland. She was a homemaker and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include: her daughter: Ann Harriet (William) Dedman of Harrodsburg; grandson, Milward (Kathy) Dedman of Harrodsburg; granddaughter, Marie Hart (David) Rudder of Lexington; a sister: Martha K. Davis of Harrodsburg and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Dr. Robert DeFoor. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: David Baker, Tebbs Moore, Joe Stevens, Ward Dedman, Dick Parsons and Michael Simms.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.

BARBARA HAMMOND

Barbara Ann Harlow Hammond, 69, of Lawrenceburg, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 8, 1940 in Mercer County to the late Lucille Coleman Watts and Samuel Harlow.

She was a graduate of Mercer County High School and Kentucky State University with a Degree in nursing. She was a member of Sand Spring Baptist Church and worked as a Registered Nurse at Frankfort Regional Medical Center, James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, and Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, James A. Hammond; two children, Lucinda (Brad) Inabnitt and Blaine Allen Hammond; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; step-mother, Stella Harlow of Harrodsburg; sister, Margaret Thompson of Harrodsburg; a brother, Kenneth (Bernadette) Harlow of Perryville; step-sister, Brenda Bruner of Harrodsburg; and a step-brother, Jackie Benge; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Sammie Harlow.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 at Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home with Dr. Mike Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Casketbearers will be Cody Hammond, Bill Thompson, Brad Buntain, Aaron Cummins, Shane Bess, and Arnold Hammond.

Honorary bearers will be Barbara’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

ROLLA HENDRICKSON SR.

Rolla B. Hendrickson Sr., of Greensburg, IN. died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was 85.

Born on October 16, 1924 in Duncan, KY, the son of the late George S. and Rozella Foley Hendrickson. He was the widower of Christine Sears Hendrickson.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa and Italy and during World War II.

Survivors include: one daughter, Linda S. Grobauskas of Greensburg, IN; two sons, Rolla B. Jr. (Sandi) Hendrickson of Lake Park, GA and Michael (Sandy) Hendrickson of St. Cloud, FL; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted Sept. 16 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home by Rev. Richard Waddle. Burial was in K of P Hall Cemetery in Duncan, KY.

NAYDEAN JOHNSON

Naydean Presley Johnson, 88, of Junction City died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at her residence.

Born Jan. 12, 1922, in Honaker, Va, she was the daughter of Edward Dotson and Maudie Wilson Presley.

She was the widow of Roy Samuel Johnson Sr. and a member of Alum Springs First Church of God. Naydean attended the Forkland schools and earned her LPN degree through Ephraim McDowell Hospital and General Hospital in Louisville. She was an LPN at Kentucky State Hospital. She was an avid quilter and loved her family above all. She also was predeceased by a son, Roy Samuel Johnson Jr.; a daughter, Linda Jean Shepperson Oaks; and a granddaughter, Tamra Michelle Johnson.

Survivors include: two daughters, Marcella (Tony) Hogue of Parksville and Connie Barlow of Junction City; a sister, Imogene Burger of Salem, IN; and two brothers, Ken Presley of Parksville and Elmer Presley of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren, Eric (Gail) Hogue, Drew Hogue, Todd (Shelley) Barlow, Daniel Barlow, Teresa Shepperson and Richie (Vanessa) Shepperson; nine great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Sabrina and Grahm Hogue, Brandi (Chris) Wheeler, Shea Shepperson, Sasha Jones and Cody, Caleb and Madilynn Shepperson; and two great-great grandsons, Ethan and Evan Wheeler.

The funeral service was held Friday, September 17, at First Church of God, Alum Springs, with Rev. Earnest Fields Jr. and Rev. Keith Willoughby officiating. Burial was in Parksville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Todd Barlow, Daniel Barlow, Drew Hogue, Eric Hogue, Richie Shepperson and Chris Wheeler.

Memorials are suggested to the Alum Springs Missionary Group.

IRENE KNIGHT

Irene Dickerson Knight, 96, of Harrodsburg, widow of Clemmons Lee Knight, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010.

Born Oct. 1, 1913 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Dorestus and Annie Beauford Parsons Dickerson. She was a graduate of Hopewell Grade School, McAfee High School and Centre College where she was valedictorian of each of her graduating classes. She received her master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. She began her teaching career at Salvisa High School in 1936 as Librarian and English teacher. She taught fifteen years at Fairview School and twenty-one at Mercer County High. During her career she also taught history and algebra. Mrs. Knight directed Glee Clubs, Quartets, Trios, Solo singers and taught Piano. She was pianist and choir leader at Hopewell Baptist Church for some seventy years. She had also served as Primary S.S. Superintendent and Teacher, a member of the Pal S. S. Class, and the Young at Heart. She was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and was listed in Who’s Who in American Education (“67-”68) as well as Who’s Who in Community Leaders of America (‘69). She is also mentioned in a Taylor University Book “Authentic Voices”. Mrs. Knight devoted her entire life to teaching and as a mentor to many.

Survivors include: Cousins; Jerry, Roy, and John David Sanders, and multitude of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Hopewell Baptist Church by Doug Westley, John David Lay, John David Lane, and John Hockersmith. She was buried in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery.

JAMES LISTER

James Clifford Lister, 80, of Mercer County died Tuesday at his residence. James was the husband of Mildred Pike Lister.

Born March 3, 1930, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late Jim and Edith Plummer Lister.

James was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, an Army veteran having served during the Korean War and a retired security guard for Certified Brake.

James was an outdoorsman; he loved hunting and fishing, and his garden. He always was tinkering with something, it could have been the tractor in the yard, or just anything that needed fixing. He always loved to be doing something.

In addition to his wife Mildred, James is survived by: three children, Charlotte Ann (Carlos) Hill and Beverly (Clifford) Bottom, both of Mercer County, and Wayne (Darlene) Lister of Danville; four grandchildren, Steven Reed, Amanda Clement, Kathy Emmerson and Ashley Hill; and six great-grandchildren, Samantha Reed, Christina and Logan Walton, Dallas Waldrop, Haley and Lizzie Clement.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christy Emmerson; and by a great-grandchild, “Our Little Angel.”

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sesptember 17, at the Deep Creek Baptist Church by Revs. Lewis Walter and Hillary Claypool. Burial was in Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. military rites were performed by American Legion Post 18.

Active pallbearers were Darrell Bottom, Joe Russell, Clayton and Paul Tyler Jr., and Tatum and Marvin Derringer.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Russell, Earl Claunch, Carols Hill and Joshua Lewis.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Heritage Hospice.

Joseph Dwayne Rhorer, 42, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at his home.
