EUNICE TIPTON

Eunice Tipton, 83, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at the Clark Regional Medical Center.

A native of Jackson, KY, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Carrie Lykins Taulbee. Eunice was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity Church of God.

Survivors include: one son, Donnie (Brenda) Clem of Winchester; two daughters, Linda (Michael) Johnson of Harrodsburg and Suzie Frascona of FL; six grandchildren, Stephen Clem, Rob Felts, Wes Felts, Rick Frascona, Stephanie Drinkwater and Sara Frascona; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Taulbee of Cynthiana; one sister, Wilma Hukle of Winchester and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Scobee Funeral Home in Winchester by Rev. Billy Keller. Burial will follow in Winchester Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Clem, Wes Felts, Rob Felts, Rick Frascona, Alan Campbell II and Alan Campbell.

Honorary bearers will be Vernon Hukle, Rusty Taulbee and Bob Abney.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice East, 407 Shoppers Dr., Winchester KY 40391.

JAMES BAXTER III

James D. Baxter, III, 75, Burgin, husband of Mary Rice Woodward Baxter, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born Sept. 16, 1934 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late James Durham and Eleanor Lucille (Ison) Baxter Jr. He served in the Army as a first lieutenant. He was a farmer and member of the Burgin Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher. He was a 1952 graduate of the Burgin High School, 1956 graduate from the University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture, and member of the Sigma Alfa Epsilon fraternity. He was also on the Hospital Board, a Small Fry Football Coach and member of the Harrodsburg Jaycees.

Survivors other than his wife include: a daughter; Ellen Baxter Ingram and two sons; James S. “Bo” Baxter and Michael W. Baxter and six grandchildren, all of Harrodsburg.

Graveside services were Sept. 8 at the Burgin Memorial Garden by Mary Dixon Wittke.

Pallbearers were: Gordon Dixon, Tom VanArsdall, Graves Clayton, Greg Womack, Stephen Reed, Granville Sherrow, and Stanley Riney. Honorary Bearers were: Bill Wharton, Skeeter Reed, Louis Daugherty, Jim Stevens, Joe Stevens, Jack Stevens, Robert VanArsdall and Dick Womack.

Memorial contributions are suggested to: St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Mercer Co. Humane Society.

WILLIAM BELL

William "Rick" Bell, 56, died Thursday, September 2, 2010.

He was born in Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by William Herbert and Bettie Soard Bell.

He is survived by: two sisters, Wilma (Sherwood) Williams and Debra (Larry) Fletcher; and a brother, John (Lee) Bell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life was held at The Alano Club, Lexington, on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 7 p.m.

CLARA CORNISH

Clara Louise Curd Cornish, 82, widow of Ray Smith Cornish, Jr., died Monday, August 30, 2010.

Born in Burgin, she was the daughter of the late Walter Wood and Clara Belle Coleman Curd.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her children, Gary (Linda) Cornish, Doug (Wanda) Cornish, Guy (Donna) Cornish, LouAnn Cornish Lawson (John Knowles) and Daryl (Betty) Cornish; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Belle Hisle, Thelma Staley and Charlesetta Greenup.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 2, at the Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, 483 West Reynolds Rd., with the Rev. Herschael York officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery.

Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements.

DARRYL KING

Darryl Wayne King, 62, Harrodsburg, husband of Patsy Humphries King, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born January 29, 1948 in Falmouth, KY, he was the son of Ruby (Perrin) King and the late Emery Calvin King. He was an Air Force veteran. He was a retired radiologic technician at the VA Hospital and was currently working maintenance at Centre College. He was a member of the Lenoxburg Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife include: his mother, Ruby (Perrin) King; one daughter; Kelly King (Gene) Moore and one son; Daniel Shane King of Harrodsburg; four sisters: Brenda King of Lexington, Janet King of Nashville, Caroline (Jim) Gallagher of Paris, and Cheryl King of Lexington; one brother: Barry King of Dry Ridge and special family friend, Sharon Pinkston.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with John David Lane and Mark Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Wayne King, Damon Denny, Edle Casey, Roger Followell, Marvin Eaton, and Jerry Mobley.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 8 from 5 - 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to American Heart Association or American Diabetes. Foundation.

LILLIAN MCMAINE

Lillian Higdon McMaine, 87, of Lexington, died September 7, 2010, at a hospital hospice.

Lillian was born at home to John Thomas and Nora Dame Higdon May 26, 1923, on a truck garden farm near Madisonville, Ky.

Lillian worked for the Army in Lexington during World War II and married Tom McMaine, a Navy veteran, in 1947. They owned Culligan Water Conditioning in Paris, Ky., from 1948 to 1967. One of their greatest challenges and joys was helping Ginny Sue, who was handicapped after having encephalitis as a baby. Tom and Lil were cattle farmers from 1967 to 1982 near Hawesville, Ky. Lillian wrote “Spools and Spoons,” a weekly homemaker’s column for the Hawesville paper for 10 years. In 1982, they moved to Lexington.

Lillian, also known as “Lil” or “Mama Lil,” enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, reading, trying new recipes, taking shorthand, playing Scrabble and using her computer. Most of all, she enjoyed being part of a Christian home fellowship and having company.

Surviving are: one son, Ronald (Linda) McMaine of Salvisa; and two daughters, Julie (Jeff) Evans of Bloomington, Minn., and Mary Ann (Arnold) Nippert of Gilbert, Ariz.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas C. McMaine (2006), daughter Virginia “Ginny Sue” McMaine (1978), brother Roy Higdon, and sisters Ruth Wood and Sarah Higdon.

The funeral will be held Friday, September 10, at 1:30 p.m. at W. R. Milward-Southland Mortuary, Lexington, Ky.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 9 from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to charities such as Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

GEORGE ROGERS

George C. Rogers, 87, Danville, husband of Geraldine “Jeri” Alberta Harris Rogers, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. Born January 5, 1923 in Corning, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Josephine (Roloson) Rogers. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a supervisor for Corning and a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Episcopal Church.

Survivors other than his wife include: a daughter; Patricia (Carroll) Perkins and a son; George (M.) Rogers along with three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Spring Hill Cemetery with full military rites. The services will be officiated by Terry Taylor.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Church or Charity of one’s choice.

VICTOR SMITH

Victor Wayne Smith, 73, of Lawrenceburg, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

He was born in Winchester, to the late John Henry and Annie Tilford Parker Smith. He was a member of the Claylick United Methodist Church and a retired machine operator for I.B.M. for 29 years.

He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Barbara Jean Phillips Smith; four daughters, Phyllis Ann (Walter) Johnson, Harrodsburg, Janet Lee (Joe) Drury, Cathy Sue Day, Vickie Lynn (Shortie) Peavler, all of Lawrenceburg; a son, Phillip Wayne (Regina) Smith, Frankfort; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a brother in law, John A. Holder, Owenton.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Frances Burgess and Virginia Holder.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Terry Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Spring Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be David Drury, Chris Day, Robbie Peavler, Jeff Peavler, Timmy Willoughby, and Carlton Hatton. Honorary Bearers will be Phillip Wayne Smith II, Justin Chase Smith, Tonya Renee Day Harvey, April Lynn Peavler Smith, Joanna Lee Drury.

DONALD VOTAW

Donald Votaw, 76, of Lawrenceburg, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at his home after an illness.

He was born in Harrodsburg to the late Renus and Mandy Mobley Votaw. He was retired from Universal Fasteners and a member of the Full Gospel Assembly of God.

He is survived by: his wife, Verna Wethington Votaw, Lawrenceburg; two daughters, Donna Newby and Carmen Greene both of Lawrenceburg; two step children, Charlene (Marvin) Slemp, Lawrenceburg, and Danny Lee (Lexie) Pittman Jr., Lexington; six grandchildren: a great-grandson: three step grandchildren; two step great -grandchildren and a sister, Margaret Ann Proctor, Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Joyce Votaw; a daughter, Vickie Slusher, a sister, and two brothers.

Funeral services were Sept. 5, 2010 at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. Mark Studler and Bro. Kenny Robinson officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Gideon’s International or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Casketbearers were Dave Black, Billy Waldridge, Steve Greene, David Bottom, Kenny Sims, Keith Sims, Kenny Turner, and Ancil Roe. Honorary Pallbearer will be Ralph Warford.

VIRGINIA WARD

Virginia Vance Ward, 72, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at Hospice of Rockingham County in Wentworth, NC. She was born in Atlanta, GA on March 12, 1938 and was the daughter of Hugh Lewis and Beatrice Watts Vance. She graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta, GA in 1956. She received a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Georgia where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She received a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University and an advanced degree in Administration and Supervision from Georgia State University.

She taught for both the Atlanta City Public Schools and DeKalb County Public Schools. She served as an Instructional Lead Teacher at Lawrenceville Elementary in Gwinnett County; worked in the county office writing grants for Early Childhood Education, English as a Second Language and Title 1 programs. She served on state committees constructing state wide math tests for students and retired from education as principal of Lawrenceville Elementary School in Lawrenceville, GA.

She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church. She served as president of Sow N Hope Garden Club and Western Rockingham County Service League in Madison and also served on the Friends of the Library for Western Rockingham Library.

She is survived by: her mother, Sara Beatrice Watts Vance of Harrodsburg; her daughter, Melissa Ward Harned and husband, Hewitt of Norwood; step son, John S. Ward, III and wife, Angey of Moncks Corner, SC, and step daughter, Marie Ward of Napierville, IL; her sister, Marilyn Vance McGaughey, PhD, of Atlanta, GA; a nehew and three step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Ward, Jr. and father, Hugh Lewis Vance.

A funeral was held Sept. 8, 2010, at Madison United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Ramsey officiating. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Spring Hill Cemetery .

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home in Harrodsburg is in charge of local arrangements.

PRISCILLA BLACKETER

Priscilla Ann Broce Blacketer, 63, widow of Billy Joe Blacketer, Sr., died Thursday Sept. 9, 2010 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center in Somerset. Born April 15, 1947 in Ashland, she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel Stumbo Broce. She was a homemaker, a member of the Benton Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening.

Survivors include her daughter Rhonda Ann Robinson of Harrodsburg and one son Billy Joe Blacketer, Jr. of Science Hill. Two sisters; Thula Clark of West Virginia and Wanda Bullock of Stanford. Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by one brother Buddy Broce and one sister Linda Berryman.

Funeral services were conducted at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Gray officiating. She was burried in Battle Cemetery with Justin Robinson, Cory Blacketer, Aaron Blacketer, Adam Robinson, Johnny Hodge, and Sean Gilliam serving as pallbearers.

ERIC DEVINE

Eric Lee Devine, 19, of Mercer County, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010. Born July 23, 1991 in Danville, he was the son of the late Kelvin Lee Devine and George A. and Rita Pike Devine of Mercer County. He was a roofer for Devine Roofing in Harrodsburg. He had attended Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors other than his parents include: paternal grandparents, William B. and Almeda Devine of Harrodsburg; paternal grandmother, Joyce Simpson Hill of Danville; maternal grandfather, William Pike of Danville; maternal great-grandmother, Nellie Wilson of Parksville. One brother Timmy Tungate and one step-brother William Drury, both of Harrodsburg; a sister, Leann Dennis of Harrodsburg and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Derek Baker officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Ronnie Devine, Clayton Devine, Johnathan Devine, Doug Garrison, Matt Neikirk, and Brandon Lee serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday and after 7 a.m. Friday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
