WILLIAM NICKLES

William B. “Bill” Nickles, age 63, of Danville, died Sunday, June 20, 2010 in Harrodsburg.

Born Dec. 18, 1946 in Lexington, he was the son of the late LaMarquis D. and Ernestine (Ballard) Nickles. He had been a stock broker and was a Baptist.

Survivors include: three daughters, Kim Humphries, Shannon Bray and Tina McCutcheon, all of Arkansas; one brother, L. D. Nickles of Harrodsburg.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.

JULIA PEAVLER

Julia Francis Peavler, 102, of Harrodsburg, widow of Floyd T. Peavler, died Thursday, June 17, 2010.

Born Jan. 7, 1908 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Annie Belle Matherly Bottom. She was the oldest member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and was the matriarch of five generations.

Survivors include: a daughter, Frances Devine of Harrodsburg; one sister, Hazel Click of Springfield; daughter-in-law, Emma Jean Peavler of Harrodsburg, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Tyler, a son, Paul Peavler, grandchildren, Sherrell Bruce Devine and Robert Peavler, a great grandson, Vernon Wayne Devine and seven siblings.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 21 at the Deep Creek Baptist Church with Scott Davis and Lewis Walter officiating. Burial was in the Deep Creek Cemetery.

Larry Devine, David Devine, Verna Gorley, Paul Wayne Peavler, Steve Peavler, Shirlene Peavler, Joe Russell and Wayne Russell served as pallbearers.

Memorials are suggested to the Deep Creek Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, 1210 Deep Creek Rd., Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

LUCY PERRIN

Lucy Mae Hager Perrin, 60, widow of Marvin Matthew Perrin, died, Saturday, June 19, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late Hilton and Dorothy Irene Prather Hager.

Survivors include: her daughter, Kelly Sue (Jeff) Fite, Paris; grandsons Jason Eric and J. T. Fite, Paris; brothers and sisters, Betty Jo Miller, Harrodsburg, Hilton “Dink” (Martha) Hager-Wilmore and Burch “Dude” (Christy) Hager, Nicholasville; a special nephew, Billy Joe Hays, Harrodsburg and numerous other family members.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ima Jean Woodward.

Services were conducted Tuesday, June 22, at Betts & West Funeral Home, Nicholasville, with Rev. Dan Barnes officiating. Burial followed in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Bearers were Billy Joe Hays, Jeff and Eric Fite, Bryan and Leigh Hager and Mike Miller.

Honorary Bearers were Eugene Welch, J. T. Fite and T. J. Miller.

Contributions suggested to Relay of Life of Jessamine County.

GENEVA PINKSTON

Geneva Gertrude Goodlett Pinkston, 89, of Lawrenceburg, widow of William Dennis “Buster” Pinkston, died Monday, June 21, 2010, at Heritage Hall Health Care Center.

Born in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Abner and Emma McKinney Goodlett. She was a member of Mt. Freedom Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Sue (James) Barnett of Springfield; two sons, Jimmy (Carol) Pinkston of Willisburg and Rick (Jamie) Pinkston of Lawrenceburg; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Dennis Pinkston; three sisters, Alma Walker, Mary Will Goodlett, and Lillian Cunningham and two brothers, Charlie Goodlett and Onis Goodlett.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 23 at Gash Memorial Chapel with Bro. George Dye officiating. Burial was in Bethel Church Cemetery in Mercer County.

Pallbearers were: Kendall Barnett, Todd Barnett, Jamie Pinkston, Chris Melrose, Travis Daniels, and Gary Waldridge.

CLARENCE RUE

Clarence Nelson “Shad” Rue, 85, of Amarillo, TX died Sunday, June 13, 2010.

Born June 11, 1925 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Insco W. and Charlotte F. Rue. He was raised in Harrodsburg and graduated from Harrodsburg High School in 1943. At that time he entered the United States Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1946 he went on to attend Baylor University and in 1950 received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Survivors include: his daughter, Deene (Jim) Hyde of Springdale, AR; two sons, Nelson (Ann) Rue of Waco, TX, and Les (Shelia) Rue of Amarillo, TX; one sister, Aileen Doehler of Littleton, CO; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Billye R. Rue and 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 21 in the Paramount Baptist Church sanctuary in Amarillo, TX with Dr. Gil Lain and Rev. Jim Hyde, officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens in Pampa, TX. Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Shad and Billye Rue Mission Trip Fund, Paramount Baptist Church, 3801 S. Western St., Amarillo, TX 79109; or a favorite charity.

CATHERINE YOUNG

Jessie “Catherine” Burge Young, 85 yrs., of Frankfort, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at her residence following an illness.

She was the widow of Franklin P. Young and was the daughter of the late Otha and Alberta Hudson Burge.

A native of Shelby Co., she was born, October 6, 1924, and was retired from Kentucky State Government, Dept. of Labor and was also a former employee for H. K. Porter. Mrs. Young was a member of North Benson Baptist Church where she was active with the Women’s Missionary Union.

Mrs. Young is survived by: three sons, David F. (Sandra) Young and Allen (Penny) Young, both of Frankfort, and Larry W. (Elaine) Young, Salvisa; one daughter, Renee Young (Robert) Bray, Lawrenceburg; one brother, Kenneth (Ora) Burge, Frankfort; one sister-in-law, Betty Burge, Shelby County; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Sutherland, Chris Young, Jeffrey Young, Wesley Young, Matthew Young, Caleb Young, Stephen Young and Kim Miley and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harold Burge.

Funeral services were conducted from Harrod Brothers Funeral Home Monday, June 21, with Rev. Landon Coleman officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodford County.

Pallbearers were Brian Burge, Mark Burge, Caleb Young, Chris Young, David Miley, Wesley Young, Kim Miley and Jennifer Sutherland.

Honorary bearer was Scott Hoover.

Flowers are welcome or expressions of sympathy may be made in honor of Mrs. Young to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Harrod Brothers Funeral Home; condolences may be shared via the online guest book at www.harrodbrothersfuneralhome.com.

NORA ARBAUGH

Nora Whitenack Sherrod Arbaugh, 85, of Louisville, passed away Monday, June 28, 2010 at her home.

She was a native of Mayo, and was a member of Ralph Avenue Church of Christ and a retired supervisor of the check collection department of the Federal Reserve Bank.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Arbaugh; her son, Steve Sherrod; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one niece.

She was predeceased by her parents, Guy and Virgie Whitenack; her brother, Elmon and her first husband, M. O. “Red” Sherrod.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Thursday, July 1 at Owen Funeral Home in Louisville with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West.

RUTH BALLARD

Ruth Ross Ballard, 95, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Lancaster, died June 26, 2010, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

She was the widow of Leeds Ballard. Ruth was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster.

Survivors include: one daughter, Nancy (Bob) McQuerry of Harrodsburg; a daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Ballard of Harrodsburg; three grandchildren, Allen McQuerry (Terri), Georgia Ellis (LeMayne) and Keith McQuerry, all of Harrodsburg; four great-grandchildren, Tara Mills, Travis McQuerry, Matthew McQuerry and Savannah McQuerry; and three great-great-grandchildren, Trevor McQuerry and Carson and Shelbie Mills, all of Harrodsburg.

She was preceded in death by a son, George Ballard.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster with Rev. Bill Morrow officiating .

Active pallbearers were Jack Bailey, Oscar Bailey, Bruce Bailey, Don Bailey, Robert Bellamy, Tommy Ross, Mark Baker and Rick Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Heritage Hospice, Danville, Ky.

Spurlin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY GOWINS

Dorothy Rae Gowins, 83, widow of Hershel Allen “Tal” Gowins, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 21, 1926 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Rastus and Bessie Walls Wells. She was retired after 26 years at Cricketeer and was a member of the Cornishville Christian Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Tony (Brenda) Gowins of Harrodsburg and Larry (Debbie) Gowins of Mt. Washington ; one daughter, Jo Ann (Kelly) Bowman of Harrodsburg; one brother, Cletus (Betty) Wells of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Gertie (Evel) Satterly of Lawrenceburg and Onita (Carl) McGauhey of Frankfort; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Donald Litteral and Leonard Price officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery with Troy Gowins, Larry Wayne Gowins, Michael Gowins, Terry Coslow, Dennis Coslow, and Travis Gowins serving as pallbearers.

ETTA HARLEY

Etta Lee Howard Harley, 79, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Hospice Care Center in Lexington. Born Dec. 31, 1930 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Grace Webber and Harney Howard and the widow of Maurice Harley. She was a housewife and worked on the family farm. She attended the University of Kentucky, was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, a former member of the Alton Homemaker Club and the D.A.R.

She is survived by two sons, Larry (Charlotte) Harley and David (Ann) Harley of Lawrenceburg; seven sisters, Dorothy Cox, Viola Beasley, and Betty Scrogham of Lawrenceburg, Fay (Frank) Burns of Science Hill, Gertrude Smith of Danville, Doris (Pete) Karnezis of Indianapolis, Patsy (Pete) Turner of Versailles; brother and sister-in-law Paul (Jerelene) Harley of Lawrenceburg; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Starlena Wiecek and a brother, Harney Howard, Jr.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, 2010 at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with the Rev. Pete Jones officiating. Burial was in Sand Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Brian and Alex Harley, Roger and Bob Cox, Jim Howard, and Bob Crossfield.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

WILLIAM HATFIELD

William C. Hatfield, 88, widower of Nancy Woods Hatfield, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born July 18, 1921 in Louisville, he was the son of the late William Conrey and Sarah Love Hatfield. He was a graduate of Louisville Male High School and attended the University of Louisville. During World War II he served as a medical technician in the U. S. Army in England, Italy and North Africa. He was a retired IBM employee and member of the Second Presbyterian Church where he was a choir member and active volunteer.

Survivors include: two sons, Thomas W. (Cynthia) Hatfield and William (Carol) Hatfield, Jr., both of Lexington; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one niece.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Sean C. Hatfield.

Graveside services with military honors were conducted Tuesday, June 29 at the Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, with Bill Silvanik officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Sayre Christian Village, 580 Greenfield Dr., Lexington, KY 40517.

WILLIE SMITH

Willie Kenneth Smith Sr., 83, of Danville, widower of the late Joann Stephens Smith, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Dec. 13, 1926 in Dugansville, he was the son of the late Claude and Emma Viola Durr Smith. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, he was retired from Wilkinson Farms after 27 years and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church.

Survivors include: five sons, Willie Kenneth (Jaime) Smith, Jr., of Junction City, Richard (Donna) Smith of Virginia, Charles Nelson Smith and Tony Smith both of Danville and Frank Smith of Michigan; three daughters, Sandra Smith of Danville, Norma Davis Smith of Lancaster and Denise (Marshall) Wilcher of Hustonville; one sister, Elsie Driskell of Salvisa, and 16 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy Morgan and one son, Billy Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Friday, July 2 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Lynn Releford officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery with Bradley Quinn, Thomas Quinn, James Quinn, Chris Releford, Jamie Releford, and Lynn Releford serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be: Harold Driskell, Mike Driskell, Wayne Savage, Gayle Savage, Thomas Savage, Jr., Jim Smith, Rickey Releford, Bill Quinn, and Steve Releford.

Visitation 5-8 p.m. Thursday and after 7 a.m. Friday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Heritage Hospice, P.O. Box 1213, Danville, KY 40423.
