NETTIE SCOTT
Nettie Kurtz Scott, 93, of Burgin, wife of Archie Scott, died Wednesday, June 2,2010.
She was an active member of the Mercer Church of Christ, a registered nurse, trained at WKU and employed in public health in Dallas, TX, and in several hospitals.
Survivors include: two daughters, Sandra Scott, of Burgin, and Pat Scott of Garrard County; a brother, Lee (Rhoda) Kurtz of Lancaster; a sister, Bessie Kellar of Knoxville,TN: three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jim; her parents, Handy and Mattie Kurtz; and sisters Margaret Edwards, Lucille Crutchfield, Elizabeth Peterman and Lowie Clary.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 4 at the Mercer Church of Christ in Harrodsburg with Rick Leach officiating. Burial was in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.

KERRY SMOCK
Kerry Tracy Smock, 50, died June 5 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
Born April 12, 1960, in Danville, he was a son of the late Ruth and O. E. “Red” Smock.
Survivors include a daughter, Callie Traci Smock of Stanford; a twin brother, Kevin (Betty) Smock of Harrodsburg; and a special friend, Tina Bryant.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Terri Townsend and Lynn Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Danville First Church of God.
Memorials may be made to Callie Smock in memory of her father.
MAURICE TURNER
Maurice Evan Turner, 64, husband of Connie Elliott Turner, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at his home in Montgomery, TX.
Born July 29, 1945 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Nellie Rae Kinder Turner of Harrodsburg and the late Ralph Ernest Turner. He was a retired Project-Design Engineer with Whirlpool Corporation, was a Baptist, and a member of the Official NASCAR Association.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters: Angela Turner (Karl) Kederis of Lexington, and Kristin Turner (Steve) Kim of Spring, TX; one brother, David Howard Turner of Birmingham, AL. and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 7 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Marty Elliott officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery
with Karl Kederis, Steve Kim, Slayman Ali, Allen Turner, Matt Wood, and Billy Abell serving as active pallbearers. Robert Kederis and Nathan Kederis served as honorary pallbearers.

LIZZIE VANDIVER
Lizzie Lee Jenkins Vandiver, 84, of Harrodsburg, widow of James H. Vandiver, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 15, 1925 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late John and Haddie Elizabeth Jenkins. She was a retired seamstress from Cricketeer and Interpreter at Shakertown. She was also a member of the Dry Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two daughters, Judy Griffin and Betty (Donnie) Releford and one son: James Lee “Punkin” (Karen) Vandiver, all of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Emily Patterson and Lucy Voohries of Harrodsburg; and a brother: Leonard Jenkins of Florence; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 4 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Donnie Releford officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Bradley Vandiver, Bobby Vandiver, Lee Releford, Dana Boliard, Bryan Boliard, Andrew Griffin, Austin Griffin and Brett Lanham. Honorary Bearers were the great-grandchildren, Men of Dry Branch Baptist and Carl VanArsdall.

BOBBY GRUBBS
Inmate dies after hanging attempt
A Boyle County Detention Center inmate who attempted to hang himself May 18 has died from his injuries.
Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Robinson said Bobby Grubbs, 31, died at 11:10 a.m. on May 27 at the University of Louisville Medical Center. Robinson said the cause of death was an anoxic brain injury due to asphyxia by ligature hanging. Robinson said Grubbs died after family members decided to take him off life support. “A lot of ties, families will wait as long as they can before taking a person off life support. It’s a very difficult decision,” Robinson said.
Grubbs was arrested May 17 and charged with theft, trespassing and possession of marijuana. He was lodge in the Boyle County Detention Center and placed in a single-occupancy detox cell because he told jail officials he had been using illegal drugs.
Phil Yates, a spokesman for the jail told the Herald that Grubbs attached a bedsheet to the HVAC vent in the detox cell in an attempt to hang himself. Guards found Grubbs and administered CPR before he was transported to the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. From there, Grubbs was airlifted to the University of Louisville Medical Center.
Boyle County Jailer Barry Harmon declined to comment on the incident.
HALLIE BURKHEAD
Hallie Ann Goodlett Burkhead, 86, of Lawrenceburg, wife of Silas Andrew Burkehead, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1924 in Spencer County, she was the daughter of the late Mamie Stewart and James Robert Goodlett.
She was a lifelong homemaker, a member and Sunday school teacher of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church; she loved being involved in mission work and was a former WMU director.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mamie May (Ralph) Richardson of Shelbyville; three sons, James Omar “J. O.” (Judy) Burkhead of Lancaster, Danny Dale Burkhead of Georgetown, and Herbert Alan (Ann) Burkhead of Georgetown, TX; 10 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and a sister Mary Jeanetta Bryant of Morristown, IN.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Andrew Burkhead; a daughter-in-law, Judy Carol Burkhead, two sisters, Catherine Goodlett and Pauline McAnelly and two brothers, Joseph Nathanal Goodlett and Bobby Glen Goodlett.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 14 at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home with Bro. Tom Conway and grandson, Bro. Brian Burkhead officiating. Burial was in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Randal Richardson, Jamie Burkhead, Matthew Burkhead, Bobby Nelson, Justin Burkhead, Ralph Douglas Richardson, Brian Burkhead and Troy Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers were John and Jeannie Burkhead, Julie Ortman, Kristy Jury, Amy Nelson, Denise Burkhead, Nana Rogers and Karista Richardson.
CARLOS CARROLL
Carlos E. Carroll, 85, of Nicholasville, died Friday, June 11, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Born in Keene, KY, he was the son of the late Bolivar D. and Julia Shryock Carroll.
He was a farmer and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Joyce (Gary) Franklin of Ft. Thomas, KY; four sisters, Rose Mae Strange of Keene, Helen Strange of Wilmore, Christine Becknell and Marie Jordan, both of Nicholasville; one brother, Bolivar “Son” Carroll of Harrodsburg; two granddaughters, Carolee (Shaun) Barber of Columbus, OH and Melissa Franklin of Knoxville, TN; and a great-granddaughter, Serena M. Barber of Columbus, OH.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lorene Becknell; and a brother, Hugh Jean Carroll.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 14, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, by the Rev. Bobby Becknell.
Burial was in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

MARTHA DUFF
Martha Frances Gibson Duff, 61, of Hazard, the widow of Chris Duff, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Born Jan. 8, 1949, she was the daughter of the late William Conrad and Alice June (Fuller) Gibson.
She is survived by three sons, Travis Lance, Joe Bill Lance and Sage Duff and five grandchildren: Dalen Lance, Jessi Lance, Morgan Lance, Nolan Lance and Seth Lance; a sister, Alice Shepperson and a brother, John Thomas “Jack” Gibson.
She was preceded in death by a sister: Ann Gibson Robbins.
A memorial visitation will be held Friday, June 18, 4-7 p.m. at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.
RUSSELL GRIDER SR.
Russell A. Grider, Sr., 74, died Sunday June 13, 2010 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 25, 1935 in Mercer County to the late William Hollis and Florence Drury Grider.
He served with the Army Airborne during the Korean War, was a tool and die operator at Means and Gay Tool Company, and a member of Choateville Christian Church.
He is survived by: his wife, Charlotte Gravitt Grider of Frankfort; three daughters, Peggy Sigwald of GA, Dorene Ellis and Carmen Inman, both of Frankfort; one son, Russell A. “Chip” Grider, Jr. of Willisburg; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Helen True and Betty Hughes, both of Frankfort; two brothers, H. C. Grider and Billy Grider, both of Frankfort.
Funeral service were held Wednesday June 16, at the Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road in Frankfort, with Rev. Mike Napier officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Casketbearers were Lawrence Sigwald, James Inman, Teddy Ellis, Brandon Inman, Joshua Inman, Jason Hamblin, Mike Hamblin, Logan Sigwald and Tyler Sigwald.
Honorary Casketbearers were his granddaughters.

TEDDY HENDREN
Teddy Brady Hendren, 53, of Lexington, widower of Vivian Crawley, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Born Aug. 5, 1956 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Cecil Hendren and Beulah Mae Hill Hendren of Harrodsburg. He was a retired Stone Mason and a Baptist.
Besides his mother, he is survived by: two sons, Christopher May of Florida and Teddy Cleveland Hendren of Lexington; one daughter, Sunshine (Damien) Brady Ann Nichols of Georgetown; one brother, Cecil Ray Hendren of Lexington; two grandchildren and one niece.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 17 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Pastor Rodney Mason and Rev. James H. Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Burgin Memorial Gardens with Mark Craig, Joe W. Craig, Hunter Bradley Craig, Payton Craig, Vern Daley, Damien Lee Nichols, and Darrell Wayne Tackett serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.
DAVID ISON
David Nelson Ison, 64, of Harrodsburg, died Friday June 11, 2010 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington.
Born May 12, 1946 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of James H. Ison of Harrodsburg and the late Eula Rue Ison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam, was a retired electrician and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
In addition to his father he is survived by: one daughter, Angel Myers of Junction City; three sons: Jacob Dewayne Ison, David Bryan Ison and James Lynn Ison, all of Junction City; three sisters: Cathy Knight of NC, Jean Conaster of TN and Sallie Phelps of Hawaii; two brothers, Larry Ison of Harrodsburg and Mike Ison of Junction City; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday June 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Danville with Bishop Jeff Tritapoe and Andrew Myers officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Ison, Mike Ison, Jacob Ison, David Bryan Ison, James Lynn Ison and Billy Knight. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery
with military Rites.

CHARLES MCMURRY
Charles E. McMurry, Jr., 75, of Harrodsburg, husband of Hattie Claunch McMurry, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
Born August 9, 1934 in Salvisa, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Ella Hazel Walters McMurry. He was a retired Mercer Co. school teacher, a member of the Mercer County Retired Teachers Association, was a retired farmer, served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the Bruner’s Chapel Baptist Church. He was a former Deacon and song leader at the Benton Baptist Church, and former song leader, teacher and Deacon at the Pioneer Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his wife include: two daughters, Lesa (Billy Mac) Gritton of Harrodsburg and Lana (Kevin) Short of Danville; six grandchildren, one step granddaughter, one great-grandson and one step great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 12 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Steve James officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
