HOWARD WATTS
Danville man dies in Sunday morning house fire
A Danville man died in a house fire Sunday morning on Mason Avenue.
Firefighters found the body of Howard Watts, 70, inside his duplex at 202 Mason Ave. shortly after arriving on the scene about 8 a.m.
Chief Mike Thomas said the fire was quickly contained but Watts was dead when crews arrived.
Boyle County Coroner Dr. James Ramey was joined at the scene by Dr. Don Hamner and State Medical Examiner Mike Wilder. Ramey said the death appeared to be accidental and asphyxiation was likely the cause.
The body was taken to Frankfort for an autopsy.
Danville Fire Marshal Ken Pflug, who is investigating with Russ Allen from the state fire marshal’s office, was still working this morning to determine the circumstances that led to the fire.
Pflug said the likely origin of the fire was in the kitchen where Watts was found. The house sustained moderate heat and smoke damage throughout, with the most serious damage found in the kitchen, Pflug said.
“Right now, we are still in investigation mode,” Pflug said. “It appears right now that this was accidental. Nothing has presented itself as a clear-cut cause.”
Cathy-Jo Wright, who lives in the adjoining unit in the duplex, said her family was preparing for church when they noticed smoke coming out of the windows of Watts’ home shortly before 8 a.m.
Wright’s husband Dwayne attempted to enter the home.
“I was getting dressed when Cathy went outside and came running right back in after she saw the smoke,” Wright said. “I went into the apartment and called his name, but nobody answered. When I got to the kitchen, the smoke just came over me, and I had to hit the floor and crawl back out.”
The Wrights and their two children were not injured, and their unit was largely undamaged by the fire.
Watts’ ex-wife Sandy, who lives nearby, said she had seen Howard the night before while he was having dinner about 5:30 p.m. Neighbors said they saw him at about 9:30 p.m.
Sandy Watts said Howard had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had recently come down with pneumonia. Pflug said the health problems could have been a contributing factor in the death.
Dwayne Wright said Watts was a good neighbor who will be missed by their entire family.
“He really treated us well, and our kids loved him,” Wright said. “He paid our son a dollar a week to check on the mail for him. It is a real tragedy.”
