ISABEL HALL
Claims death was accidental
Local doctor charged with murdering wife
The arrest of a Harrodsburg doctor on a charge of murdering his wife Friday afternoon has left the local community stunned.
Dr. Steven Hall, 46, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the murder of his wife, Isabel Lynn Hall, 49, and has stated the death, which occurred on Herrington Lake near Gwinn Island Resort in Boyle County, was an accident.
However, alleged witnesses told police officials otherwise, stating Dr. Hall intentionally ran over his wife with a pontoon boat.
Mrs. Hall, 49, died Friday from injuries suffered when she was hit by a pontoon boat driven by Dr. Hall.
A Kentucky State Police citation states that Dr. Hall drove over and killed his wife with the boat and that “five independent witnesses stated that this was an intentional act.”
The citation further states that Dr. Hall “admitted that he and his wife were in a physical altercation and he threw here off the boat into the lake.” Hall said he dove the boat towards his wife to scare her and accidentally struck here, the citation states.
According to witness reports to state police detectives and others, the Halls were reportedly arguing on the boat about 4:30 p.m. Friday when Dr. Hall allegedly threw his wife off the boat and ran over her.
Mrs. Hall died instantly from blunt force injury to her head where the boat’s propeller hit here, said Dr. James Ramey, Boyle County Coroner. Ramey declared Mrs. Hall dead at the scene at 5:25 pm. Friday. The body was sent to the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort where an autopsy was conducted.
KSP Detectives Chris Short and Bill Collins are continuing to investigate the death. State troopers responded to the first call to the lake at 4:32 p.m. Friday after receiving a report that a woman had been stuck by a boat. Upon arrival officers determined Mrs. Hall’s injuries were fatal.
“The initial investigation determined that Mr. Steven Hall, age 46, and his wife, Isabel Hall, age 49, were spending the day boating on Herrington Lake. At some point, the pontoon boat being operated by Steven Hall struck his wife, causing fatal injuries. After further investigation by KSP detectives, and interviews conducted with witnesses, Steven Hall was charged with the murder of his wife, Isabel Hall,” KSP Community Relations Officer Chris Lanham stated in an official news release.
Carla Kitchen, an employee at Gwinn Island Resort, said Monday that she received a frantic call at 4:30 pm. Friday from a woman reporting the death.
She said the woman said someone was hurt. “I asked if she was okay,” Kitchen said, and added that caller responded, “No, she’s dead.”
Kitchen said the caller told her a woman was thrown from a boat and run over. The caller contacted 911 before calling Kitchen.
“I tried to get more information on her location to know where the send police,” Kitchen said, nothing that the pontoon boat the Halls were on was near a curve by the marina and not visible from the docks.
“The (caller) said the couple was arguing, and that the woman yelled, ‘somebody help me,’ and the guy pushed her off the boat and ran over her,” Kitchen said.
Kitchen added that the caller was with her family. “They all witnessed that – I felt the terror in her voice and my heart went out to her.” The caller asked for the police to hurry because the man was trying to drag the body away, Kitchen said.
“I later found out he had tied her (Isabel Hall) to the boat to keep her from floating off,” said Kitchen.
The lake had not been that busy Friday, but was beginning to get busy with people coming after work, according to Kitchen. Police used a pontoon from the marina to go to the Halls. The pontoon the Halls were on was later taken from the lake, Kitchen said.
The incident was a first of its kind for the marina staff. “It was very upsetting to the staff – we’ve never been through anything like that before,” Kitchen said.
Dr. Hall was booked into the Boyle County Detention Center at 5:30 a.m. Saturday where he was lodged in the maximum security area with other inmates. No bond was set for Hall. He was arraigned by video in Boyle County District Court Tuesday morning and a preliminary hearing on the murder charge is set for 3:30 pm. Today (Thursday). Hall remained lodged in the jail; without bond.
Dr. Hall has an office at 466 Linden Ave. With Drs. Nick Dedman Rick Angel and Michael Geile.
Like others in the Mercer County community, the three doctors were shocked by the news of Mrs. Hall’s death and Dr. Hall’s arrest.
“Obviously this is just a terrible tragedy. We are all stunned. Our Hearst go out to the families of Dr. Hall and Isabel. We’re right now just trying to get through day to day and just go from there,” Dr. Dedman said Monday.
Dr. Earl Motzer, CEO at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, expressed similar sentiments Monday, saying, “all members of the Hall family are in our hearts and prayers.”
Friends and acquaintances of the Halls said the couple and their two sons moved to Harrodsburg from Canada about 12 years ago.
Friends described Mrs. Hall as a kind, giving, warm hearted person, and described Dr. Hal as a generous and giving person as well. Both were described as devoted parents to their two sons, ages 14 and 15.
A native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Mrs. Hall was the daughter of Duncan and Christine MacVicar. In addition to her husband and sons, she is survived by two sisters and a brother.
