JOHN SMITH III
John Wiley Smith III, 59, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.
Born, May 21, 1949 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Mary Elizabeth VanDyke Bradshaw and the late John Wiley Jr. and was the husband of Jean Hartman Smith.
He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict, was a former police officer for the Harrodsburg Police Department, retired from the Harrodsburg Waste Water Treatment Plant, was an employee of the Harrodsburg Transportation Company. He was also a Little League and High School Baseball Umpire, an interim pastor for the Dividing Ridge Baptist Church in Mayo and was a member and associate minister of the Centennial Baptist Church where he was also in charge of the Bus Ministry for many years. He was a 1968 graduate of Harrodsburg High School,
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include: two sons, Donald Wayne (Colette) Smith and Scottie (Melissa) Bottoms, both of Harrodsburg; two step daughters, Paulette (A.J.) Riehl of Indiana and Velma Moore of Harrodsburg; three step sons, Allen and Tommy Moore, both of Harrodsburg and Benny (Sarah) Moore of Louisiana; seven brothers, Don Smith, of Danville, Steven Smith, Cecil (Beverly) Smith, Joey Dale (Loretta) Smith, Gary Smith amd Tilton (Lois) Bradshaw, all of Harrodsburg and Mark (Angie) Smith of Ashland; three sisters, Loretta (Robert) Bean, Mary (Jerry) Wiley and Sandra VanDyke, all of Harrodsburg; 22 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Alicia Yeast Smith and a daughter, Karen Denise Smith.
The visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at the Centennial Baptist Church, 291 West Lane Street in Harrodsburg. The funeral will be Friday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J.D. Short III officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 and prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Pallbearers are Victor Brown, Paul Ellis, Alvis Johnson, Remont Mayes, Jr. Mullins, Jesse Thomas, Sam Wheat III and William "Bo" Yeast.
Parks Funeral Home of Harrodsburg is in charge of the arrangements.
HERMAN TAYLOR
Herman Taylor, 69, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at his residence.
Born Aug. 24, 1939 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Edwin and Mary Coleman Taylor.
He was a retired auto body repairman having worked for Elwood Long Used Cars and the Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort. He was a retired veteran of the National Guard and a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Doug (Angie) Taylor of Harrodsburg; one sister, Carolyn Hardin of Moreland; one half brother, Fred Darson of Washington , D.C. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Taylor and a sister, Ruby Harrison.
No services are planned. Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
LORETTA VOTAW
Loretta Laverne Votaw, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.
Born Feb. 24, 1931 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Coleman and Edna Riley Votaw.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: two brothers, Fred Votaw and John C. Votaw, both of Harrodsburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 at the Lancaster Cemetery
with Bro. Lewis Walters officiating.
Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
JEFFREY WAINSCOTT
Jeffrey Lynn Wainscott, 43 of Lawrenceburg died Wednesday Jan. 21, 2009.
Born Nov. 24, 1965, he was the son of the late Mary Brock and David H. Wainscott and was the husband of Barbara Maret Wainscott.
He was a member of the Frankfort Church of God.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Jennifer Renee Wainscott of Lexington; one brother, Joe (Sheerye) Wainscott of Lawrenceburg and one uncle, John (Norma) Brock of Harrodsburg.
A Memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Richie and Peach Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Cable officiating.
WILLIAM BOTTOMS
William Madison Bottoms, 76, of Mackville, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center.
Born April 11, 1932 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Madge Wilson Bottoms and was the husband of Willie Frances Hendren Bottoms.
He was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church, an Army veteran and a retired truck driver.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Jeannie Warner of Frankfort; two sons, David Bottoms of Dry Ridge and Allen (Karen) Bottoms of Campbellsvills; three brothers, Ernest Lee Bottoms of Edmonton, Carroll Dean (Ingrid) Bottoms of DeKalb, IL and Leon (Blonnie Jean) Bottoms of Lawrenceburg and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Cheatham and six brothers, Thurman, Wilson, Jim, Loraine, Addison and Cecil Bottoms.
The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Carey and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Readnour and Charles Knecht officiating. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery
at Mackville with full military rites by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were David Bottoms, Derek Bottoms, Jim Smith, Freddie Bottoms, Ed Preston, Keith Peavler and Billy Yankey.
MIKE BUTCHER
Dayton Michael "Mike" Butcher, 71, husband of Peggy Hatchell Butcher, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at his home in Danville.
He was born October 13, 1937, in Elkhart, Ind., the son of Bette E. Butcher and the late Dwight D. Butcher.
He was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church in Danville, where he served as a deacon and taught adult Bible study. He previously was a member and served at Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington,. He was a 1955 graduate of Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Ky., and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He then began his 40-year career in kitchen and bath design in Lexington,. He moved his home and business to Danville in 2001.
Survivors include: his wife of 32 years, Peggy Hatchell Butcher of Harrodsburg; mother, Bette E. Butcher, Lexington; and a brother, David D. Butcher; one daughter, Kristi L. (David) Yahn; two sons, Gregory M. (Anna) Butcher and Joshua B. Butcher; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of Lexington.
The funeral service was conducted Monday, February 2, at the Lexington Avenue Baptist Church, Danville. Burial was in Springhill Cemetery, Harrodsburg.
The family requests donations be sent to the American Heart Association.
Stith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
KENNETH CHILTON
Kenneth Ray Chilton, 47, of La Center, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 in West Paducah.
Born April 30, 1961, in Mercer County, he was the son of Ralph and Selena Chilton of Lawrenceburg and was the husband of Kay Goode Chilton of La Center.
He was employed at Youngblood Construction Company in Mayfield and was a member of Antioch Masonic Lodge # 332.
In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include: one sister, Carol (Mike) Samples of Lawrenceburg; two sons, William Fondaw and Chris (Laura) Fondaw, both of La Center and two grandsons.
The funeral was held Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Marrow Funeral Chapel in La Center with Rev. Frankie Goode officiating. Interment was in the Chilton Family Cemetery
in Bandana.
FLOYD CORN
Floyd Wayne Corn, 56, of Lawrenceburg died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at his residence.
He was born March 29, 1952 in Anderson County to the late Presley K. and Callie Mildred Drury Corn.
He was a former employee of the Square D Company, a plumber’s assistant, and worked in electricity and construction. He was a member of the Sand Spring Baptist Church and the Freedom/Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Floyd is survived by: his wife of 37 years Nadine Hays Corn; a daughter Suzanne Corn of Lawrenceburg; three sisters, Mildred (Jim Cooley) Rogers and Merry (Steve) Driskell of Lawrenceburg, and Wanda (Rick) Davis of Harrodsburg; two brothers James P. (Joyce) Corn and Chesley T. (Debbie) Corn, both of Lawrenceburg.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, February 3rd, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg, with Dr. Mike Hamrick officiating. Burial was in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Sand Spring Baptist Church Building Fund, 1616 Harrodsburg Road, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342.
BENNIE JENKINS
Bennie L. Jenkins, 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Charleston Health Care Manor, in Danville.
Born Oct. 10, 1940 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Herbert R. Jenkins and Lena Jones Jenkins and was the husband of Linda Baugh Jenkins.
He was an employee of Hallmack Inc. and WalMart and was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church
In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Marcus L. Jenkins of Stanford and Gregory L. Jenkins of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Pamela Ryan and Sharon Jenkins, both of Harrodsburg and Stephanie Peavyhouse of Junction City; three brothers, Dudley Jenkins and James Jenkins, both of Danville and Lonnie Jenkins of Harrodsburg; one sister, Mary Georgia Bennett and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Franklin, Lawrence and Howard Jenkins and two sisters, Nancy Inman and Diane Cornish.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marion Ray Inman, Johnny Inman, Michael Jenkins, Russell Jenkins, Gary Ryan II, Kyle Jenkins, Ronald Baugh and Daniel Edwards.
Robert Peavyhouse will serve as honorary pallbearer
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 and after 7 a.m. on Friday at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.
LOUISE MORRIS
Louise L. Morris died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 in Sun City Center, FL.
Born Aug. 29, 1917 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Minor and Rilda Lester and was the widow of Henry L. Morris.
She was a graduate of Rose Hill High School and was a former co-owner of Henri’s Fashions in Lexington. She was a member of First Christian Church of Lakeland, FL.
Survivors include: one son, Robert Bruce (Mary Martha) Morris of Sarasota, FL; one sister, Helen Carpenter of Lexington; one brother, Horace (Lucille) Lester of Mercer County; two granddaughters; two great–grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Varner Lester.
Services will be private. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

BOBBY PAYTON
Bobby Lynn Payton, 55, of Stanford, died Friday January 30, 2009.
Born August 15, 1953 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Herlan Payton and Dolly Mae Turpin.
He worked at Boyle Block and was Pentecostal.
Survivors include: three sons, Robbie (Jessica) Payton of Hustonville, Jeff Payton of Stanford, and Greg (Becky) Payton of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Crystal Payton of IN; six brothers, David Payton of Danville, Donald Payton of Casey County, Wayne, Ranny, and Gary Payton of Stanford and William Payton of Burgin, seven grandchildren, Hunter, Natalie, Miranda, and Austin Payton, Allison Dowell, Alex and Hunter B. Hart.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timmy.
Funeral Services were held. Tuesday, February 3, at the W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home, Moreland, by Rev. Gary Yocum. Burial was in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ranny, Gary, Dwayne, Shane, Troy and Aaron Payton.
