Mary McDermott, devoted teacher, secretary
Sister Mary Scholastica McDermott fell just a few months short of celebrating 75 years as a professed sister.
During her long life, Sister Mary, 97, of Melbourne, taught thousands of students; helped dozens of them find jobs; and spent 13 years in the office of the Diocese of Covington, where she served as secretary for Bishop William Mulloy and Bishop Richard Ackerman.
"She was always interested in her students and concerned they do well in her courses," said Sister Susan Baumann, a longtime friend. "As much as she was able, she would help them find jobs."
Sister Mary, of the Congregation of Divine Providence, died Monday at Holy Family Home in Melbourne.
She taught business classes at various schools, including Newport Catholic.
Sister Mary was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States as a child. Her family settled in Tennessee and later moved to Elmwood Place in Ohio.
She attended St. Aloysius Church in Elmwood Place and dedicated herself to the church. She would have celebrated her 75th year as a nun in August.
Sister Mary was loved by her students, Sister Susan said: "Many of them kept in contact with her, even to this day."
