James “Jim” Payne, 85, of London, Kentucky, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at his home. He was the son of the late A.M. (Jennings) and B.M. Payne, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary O’Dell Payne.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, October 16, at the Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell, Tennessee, with burial following in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, October 15, at the funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the McDaniel Cemetery.

Doris M. Byrd, 92, of Gray, Kentucky, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Rebecca Allen and James Palmer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Byrd.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9, at the Corbin Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the Calvary Cemetery.
Lorene Benge Williams

Lorene Benge Williams, 78, of East 4th Street, London, Kentucky, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, at her residence.
Born April 2, 1923, in Clay County, Kentucky, she was the retired co-owner and operator of Benge Farm Supply in London. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leona (Walden) Benge and Sherman Benge; a sister, Thelma Pearl Bruner; and two brothers, Loren Benge and Billy Sherman Benge.
Survivors include her husband, Victor S. Williams of London, Ky.; a son, Ted Williams of East Bernstadt, Ky.; two daughters, Marna Bundy of London, Ky., and Kaye Parsley of Oakland, Ky.; two brothers, Charlie Benge and Harold Benge, both of London, Ky.; three sisters, Viola Brewer, Virginia Chesnut and Ann Berry, all of London, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, at the London Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Terry Lester officiating.
Burial followed in the Benge Cemetery
at London.
Pallbearers were Ed Stanko, Scott Porter, Philip Bundy, Hubbell Williams, Austin Williams and Melvin Chesnut.
David Walter Nelson
International Harvester
David Walter Nelson, 58, of Victory Road, East Bernstadt, Kentucky, died Friday, October 5, 2001, at the University of Louisville.
Born July 7, 1943, in Laurel County, Kentucky, he was retired from the International Harvester Plant in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a veteran of the United States Army, was a member of the Olive Gilead Methodist Church, and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor of science degree in accounting.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Arthur “A.H.” Nelson.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Nelson of East Bernstadt, Ky.; a son, Todd Nelson of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Tiffany Wilbert of Louisville, Ky.; four sisters, Judy Gautsch of Tuscon, Ariz., Irene Goldstein of Vero Beach, Fla., Orvilyne Gumm of Somerset, Ky., and Linda Joseph of Pittsburg, Ky.; a brother, Emery Nelson of Louisville, Ky.; and a grandchild, Deaven Wilbert of Louisville, Ky.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Monday, October 8, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Cornelius officiating.
Burial followed in the Nelson Cemetery
at East Bernstadt.
Mary Elizabeth Gabbard

Mary Elizabeth Gabbard, 95, of Annville, Kentucky, in Jackson County, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Jackson Manor.
Born in Jackson County, Kentucky, on May 25, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Syrena (McDowell) Simpson. She was a retired school teacher, receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Kentucky University. She was a member of the McWhorter Christian Church, the Eastern Star, DAR, Alpha Delta Kappa and Daughters of the Nile, and Central Baptist Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ernest L. Gabbard; a sister, Gertrude Hillard; and a brother, Charles L. Simpson.
She is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Charles L. Hillard, Mary Trosper, Andy Hillard, Donna Simpson, Dana Albrecht, Charley Price, Ova Gene Gabbard, Fletcher Gabbard, Arkie Gabbard, Violet Kostun, Ernestine Reece, Tony Gabbard, Sylvia Boggs and Dennis Tillery, along with great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, at the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Quentin McNabb and Eldon Bowling officiating.
Burial followed in the Lexington Cemetery
at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers were Andy Hillard, Tom Trosper, Ova Gabbard, Stanley Boggs, Fletcher Gabbard and Tony Gabbard.
