Mary A. Rawlings, social worker
Mary A. Rawlings spent her life making other people's lives easier.
In her work with social service agencies, she helped people with disabilities file for benefits, she was an advocate for senior citizens, she brought encouragement to stroke victims.
In later years, when her own disabilities confined her to her home, she continued to dispense compassion, humor and good counsel over the telephone from her home in Southgate.
Mrs. Rawlings died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was 78.
She took a job with the Community Action Commission in 1969, after her husband, Melvin Rawlings, died. She later was a case worker for Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky from 1974 through the mid-1980s. When she left the Community Action Commission, then-CAC director Charles T. Clemons wrote: "I know your services cannot be replaced - maybe filled, but never replaced."
Mrs. Rawlings told a reporter in 1975 that she started her social activism as a way to thank God: "I had an illness in 1959. I told God if He'd help me with that, I'd spend the rest of my life helping others."
But her selflessness started long before that, said her daughter-in-law, Judy Rawlings of Union: "She always cared about people. Her mother was that way, and she carried on that tradition. She would find people who needed help. She had an indomitable spirit. She was enthusiastic about helping other people."
As a case worker for Senior Citizens, Mrs. Rawlings often walked door to door to give help. She became a problem solver. If seniors had trouble dealing with government paperwork, Mrs. Rawlings stepped in. If they needed food or medicine or just a friend, she was there.
One woman called her in the middle of the night because the heater in her mobile home wasn't working. Mrs. Rawlings got on the phone and recruited an Army of volunteers who brought heat and help to the woman that night.
She helped run senior meal sites in Ludlow and later in Newport.
Medical problems, including Diabetes., congestive heart failure, breathing problems and difficulty walking confined her to her house in later years.
"But her voice and her spirit were still strong," said grandson Chris Rawlings. "She couldn't get out, but she could use the phone. She was a counselor and supporter of family, neighbors, anyone who crossed her path."
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Florence.
Survivors include a son, Charles C. Rawlings of Union; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
