Jack Gettys, CG&E retiree and traveler
Jack T. Gettys spent much of his life working for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. and his retirement years traveling America's back roads.
Mr. Gettys, a former maintenance superintendent at CG&E's Beckjord power plant in New Richmond, Ohio, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 82.
Mr. Gettys was born in Newport and married his school sweetheart, Eva.
He started his career with CG&E as a young man stoking coal-fired boilers.
The Gettys had two sons and lived in Covington, Elsmere and Burlington before he was transferred to the Beckjord power plant in the early 1950s. The family moved to a small farm in New Richmond, where Mr. Gettys started raising race horses.
"He used to get up at 4 a.m. so he could feed the horses before going to work," said his son, Pete Gettys of Ruston, La.
Mr. Gettys rose in the maintenance department to foreman and was maintenance supervisor when he retired in 1974. He and his wife decided that retirement was the time to see the country, so they sold their home and belongings, outfitted a truck and house trailer and hit the road. They toured the country, making lasting friendships along the way.
"A group of friends would agree to meet in Arizona or Colorado or Texas , and they'd stay a month and then they'd go somewhere else," his son said.
His parents would swing through Louisiana each year to visit him, Pete Gettys said.
"They'd have two or three couples with them. The people they met were tremendous. My father loved people. He was always jovial. He liked to make people laugh. My father taught me always to be honest with people and be sincere - with friends and with people you meet for the first time."
Mr. Gettys and his wife settled in Florida in 1988. Mr. Gettys had open-heart surgery in 1991 and they moved back to Florence in 1992.
He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Burlington, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Union Baptist Church and American Legion Post 550 in New Richmond.
Other survivors include a son, Terry Gettys of Amelia, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials: Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
