Career railroader William Garnett, was musician, archer, dog breeder
When it came to music, William E. Garnett was a natural.
"He played the saxophone, and he played the clarinet. He could play the piano, the organ and the violin," said Mr. Garnett's wife, Wilhemina.
Mr. Garnett, 88, of Elsmere, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Mr. Garnett was an apprentice on the railroad when he first encountered musical instruments, his wife said. "One of the other workers got him interested and started him playing," she said.
Music took Mr. Garnett to Paris, France, his wife said. "He played with Bob Ranier, and they played at Ciro's in Paris," she said.
Mr. Garnett had associations with a number of bands over the years, including Bob Sidell's group, which played on the Island Queen riverboat, Mrs. Garnett said. "They would go up river and play at Coney Island, in Moonlight Gardens, with all the big bands," she said.
In recent years, Mr. Garnett became involved with the newly organized Florence Community Band. He also played with the Hamilton, Ohio, Senior Citizens' Band.
Music remained a part-time endeavor for Mr. Garnett, however. He continued to work for the Southern Railroad and retired as a brakeman in 1974 with 50 years' service, his wife said.
Mr. Garnett was a competitive archer, and also bred beagle hounds. His kennel was known as Dixie Beagles, and he won championships with his dogs in field trials, Mrs. Garnett said. He was a member of the Ohio Valley and the Honey Bee beagle clubs.
