Floy Herron was dedicated to teaching - and learning
Floy Ema Young Herron was almost 60 years old and had been teaching at a public elementary school in Elsmere for nearly 20 years when she decided to get her formal teaching certificate.
After graduating from high school, she had taken the teaching courses that were required at the time to teach school in Kentucky. But it was not the formal certificate that teachers must have today.
Ms. Herron wanted the real thing. She took courses at Eastern Kentucky University and graduated with a teaching degree in 1970.
"You need to finish up business, you need to prove you can do it, and she did, after everything she'd been through in life," said her daughter, Kathy Powers of Cincinnati.
"We were very proud of her."
Ms. Herron died Thursday at Hospice of Cincinnati. The Elsmere resident was 88.
After graduating from Williamsburg High School, she decided to become a teacher.
At the time, student teachers could alternate working in the classroom and going to school for their teaching certificates.
The money she made for teaching came in the form of coal, produce and other goods. That, in turn, paid for her to attend classes at Berea, Cumberland and Union colleges, Ms. Herron's daughter said.
In 1938, she married and two years later she quit teaching to raise her only child.
The family moved in 1944 to Northern Kentucky, where her husband, Luther, found work with what is now the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky.
They settled in Elsmere, where Ms. Herron lived the rest of her life.
Her husband died in 1982.
Ms. Herron resumed work as a kindergarten teacher for Elsmere Baptist Church in 1949. A few years later, she started teaching kindergarten and first grade at Dorothy Howell Elementary in Elsmere, where she worked until her retirement in 1972.
During that time, she also trained at Indiana University to become an instructor in the federal Head Start program for preschoolers from low-income families.
Ms. Herron was one of the first Head Start-trained instructors in Northern Kentucky.
The church, the Bible, family and students were "the world" for Ms. Herron, her daughter said.
At Elsmere Baptist Church, where she was a longtime member, she taught Sunday school to older women, and she also was superintendent of the Sunday school primary school department.
"She was a giving and forgiving person," Ms. Powers said. "She was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it be time, money or whatever anyone needed."
Other survivors include a sister, Addie Vaughn of Corbin; a brother, Richard Emerson Young of Erlanger; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elsmere Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to Principle of the Building Fund, Elsmere Baptist Church, 250 Garvey Ave., Elsmere, Ky., 41018; or Arthritis Foundation, 7811 Laurel Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45243. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
