Rev. John V. Hegenauer, was superintendent, led Newport Catholic
Monsignor John V. Hegenauer left a legacy wherever he worked - whether it was as pastor of St. Philip Church in Melbourne, Ky., or as superintendent of the Diocese of Covington Schools.
"When he was a principal and superintendent, he did so much to make sure the office was very professional, he did all he could to make sure the schools were fully accredited, the teachers up on all their credentials," said a longtime friend, the Rev. Charles Hoffer.
Monsignor Hegenauer, of Ft. Thomas, died at 6:20 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. He was 84.
He grew up in Frankfort and was ordained a priest in 1940. He served throughout Northern Kentucky, including as the associate pastor of St. Augustine Church in Covington in the early 1940s.
Father Hoffer met Monsignor Hegenauer while he was serving at St. Augustine.
"He was a very warm person, very personable and a friend of all the priests, for sure," Father Hoffer said. "Everybody loved Father Hegenauer, and so did the people."
He went to school to become a teacher, and eventually earned his master's degree in education.
In 1947, he became principal of Newport Central Catholic High School, a position he held until 1964.
From 1964 to 1975, he served as superintendent of the diocese schools.
Monsignor Hegenauer was a great leader, Father Hoffer said, but the teachers, students and administrators loved him for his ordinariness, he said.
"He was just very ordinary, and just loved people, and people loved to be with him," Father Hoffer said.
"He really left a legacy at Newport Catholic - and as superintendent."
Monsignor Hegenauer gave 110 percent to whatever he did - whether it was as superintendent, or later, as pastor of St. Philip Church in Melbourne, Father Hoffer said.
Even his entertaining was first class, Father Hoffer said. He loved to cook - and he did so as well as any gourmet chef, Father Hoffer said.
In 1983, Monsignor Hegenauer retired to St. Thomas Parish in Ft. Thomas and moved to Carmel Manor in Ft. Thomas in 1986.
Survivors include a sister, Helen F. Hegenauer of Silver Spring, Md.; and a nephew, Mark Wentzel of Phoenix.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort.
