Donald N. Baglien, football coach and teacher at Newport Catholic
Donald N. Baglien was one of those coaches and teachers that students never forgot.
For 17 years, Mr. Baglien was a teacher and an assistant football coach at Newport Central Catholic High School.
'Kids were still inviting him to weddings and using him for references,' said his wife, Barbara Baglien.
'He just seemed to touch so many of them in a special way. Whenever they would hear the name, kids would come out of the woodwork - "I had him.' "He was great.' "How's he doing?' "Tell him I said hi.' He stayed in teaching because he loved the kids.'
Mr. Baglien, 51, of Edgewood, died at 8:56 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington, where he taught Children's Worship Service.
Mr. Baglien also had been a principal at Silver Grove High School and a teacher at Newport Middle School, the Sylvan Learning Center and the University of Cincinnati.
Bill Morgan, a football coach at Newport Central Catholic, said Mr. Baglien had a knack for getting the best out of students, whether in the classroom or on the football field. Students knew that Mr. Baglien would always be fair with them, he said. Mr. Baglien also coached baseball.
'Don was a good man who loved being around kids and they loved being around him,' Mr. Morgan said. 'He was always there for the kids. He would give kids extra chances to perform. He always tried to get the point across: "Always try your best, always give it your best shot. If you work hard, good things are going to happen to you.' That's something I picked up from Don many years ago, and I still use that in coaching today.'
Mr. Baglien was the father of two daughters.
'His girls were very close to him,' Mrs. Baglien said. 'He was just a very patient and loving father that took an interest in everything they did. They just enjoyed each other's company.'
Other survivors include daughters, Emily Baglien and Rachel Baglien, both at home; and his mother, Mabel Baglien of Edgewood.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
