Nathaniel Barczak, 16, loyal son, friend
Nathaniel "Nathan" Lee Barczak was an easy-going, friendly teen-ager who mowed lawns for his parents' business, worked on his computer daily and enjoyed spending time with his friends.
He wasn't a great athlete, and he was an average student, said his mother, Barbara Barczak. But he was spectacular in his own right, she said.
"He wasn't the kind of kid who stuck out in a crowd, but if anyone ever needed a friend, Nathan was there for them," she said.
"He was just easy-going, always had a smile on his face, liked to kid around. He didn't drink, didn't smoke, didn't do drugs. . .He was just an all-around good kid."
Nathan, of Walton, died Sunday in an auto accident on Green Road in Walton. He was 16.
He grew up in the Independence area, and recently moved with his family to Kenton County, near Walton.
The Simon Kenton High School junior loved to work on his computer, and sometimes spent hours on it a day. He intended to go to ITT Technical Institute in Cincinnati after graduating to study computer programming.
Lately, Nathan had been spending a lot of time writing computer programs for a class at school, his mother said. He also enjoyed e-mailing friends he made on the Internet.
"He had friendships, real friendships, that he made - not the empty ones you hear about - to the point where we are receiving e-mails from people across the country telling us how sorry they are," Mrs. Barczak said.
Nathan had recently taken a job with Arlinghaus Hardwood Floor Co., but also worked for his father's lawn-service business.
He also enjoyed sports, having been a member of the soccer and basketball teams while at St. Cecilia Elementary School in Independence.
"He played soccer from the first through eighth grades," Mrs. Barczak said. "And he played basketball from the time he was in the fourth grade."
"He wasn't great, but he loved to play. Mostly, he liked to interact with the team."
Nathan was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and a Boy Scout in a troop at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger.
Other survivors include his father, Henry Barczak; a brother, Jonathon Barczak of Walton; and grandparents, Maria Barczak of Fort Mitchell, and Hugh and Nancy Barth of Union.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. A reception in the church undercroft will follow the Mass. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Nathaniel Lee Barczak Memorial Fund, in care of Huntington Bank, 6433 Taylor Mill Road, Independence, Ky. 41051. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
