Robert Ford, Owen County attorney
Robert C. Ford Jr. was known as an attorney always willing to help younger people in the profession, and for treating people the same, regardless of their station in life.
Mr. Ford, 88, of Owenton, died Saturday in Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton.
He served for 44 years as county attorney in Owen County, perhaps the longest tenure in the office in Kentucky history. Mr. Ford retired from the office several years ago and did not seek re-election.
"I don't think that he ever had opposition in an election. He brought an awful lot of good to Owen County," said Circuit Judge Charles Satterwhite, whose district includes Owen, Carroll and Grant counties.
"He was a very congenial person. ... a warm and gentle man. He had a very sharp mind," Carroll County District Judge Stan Billingsley said.
"He was very encouraging to young attorneys, and in fact is responsible for my being a judge," Satterwhite said. He recalled a conversation he had with Mr. Ford in 1976, before the judicial amendment that restructured Kentucky's court system went before the voters.
"He encouraged me to be a trial commissioner, or to run for district judge," said Satterwhite, who was elected to the district bench and later as a circuit judge. Satterwhite's family and Mr. Ford's family were close over the years, the judge said.
Mr. Ford was a past president of the Kentucky County Attorney Association and was a member of the Kentucky Bar Association. He was also a member of Owenton First Baptist Church, the American Legion and Owen Lodge No. 128 F&AM. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Ford of Owenton; daughters, Lucy Ford Sutherland of Frankfort and Betsy Ross Ford of Atlanta; brothers, Jim Ford of Owenton and Guy Barrett Ford of Marblehead, Mass.; sisters, Missy Mitchell of Deland, Fla., Frances Ford Hill of Wilton, Conn., Alice Stein of Atlanta, Sarita Ford of Mulberry, Fla., and Elizabeth Latimer of Lexington; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
