Seward Abbott, served as minister, Florence councilman, TANK chairman
Seward R. Abbott believed in the importance of being involved in the community.
He lived by his beliefs, serving as a city councilman, government board chairman, church deacon, minister and Sunday school superintendent.
"It was just part of his life, especially his church work," said a daughter, Irma Smith of Cincinnati.
Mr. Abbott, a long-time Florence resident, died Sunday at the Deupree Community in Cincinnati, where he had been living since June. He was 90.
He grew up on a farm in Polasky County, Ky., and attended Berea College.
He taught school in rural Polasky County for two or three years after he got out of college. He married his wife of 69 years, Grace Reynolds, in the late 1920s.
"They knew each other all their lives because they went to church and school together," Ms. Smith said.
The couple had three children. Their first was born in Indianapolis while Mr. Abbott was doing farm work there.
The family soon moved to Cincinnati, where he got a job with what is now the Metro transit company in Cincinnati. He eventually became a supervisor and retired from Metro in 1972 after 37 years, Ms. Smith said.
Mr. Abbott and his wife lived most of their lives in Florence. The family moved there about 53 years ago, Ms. Smith said, "mostly just because he liked the fresh air and open spaces."
While in Florence, he participated as a city councilman and was a member of the Florence Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a minister and Sunday school superintendent.
He also was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Florence Masonic Lodge No. 949 F&AM, and Florence Order of the Eastern Star.
After he retired from Metro, he was appointed to the board of the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky. He sat on the board, and became its chairman, for 13 years until his retirement in 1994.
In his spare time, he liked to make clocks for his children, grandchildren and friends.
"His pride and joy was a grandfather clock he made for himself and mother," Ms. Smith said.
Other survivors include his wife, Grace Abbott; a son, Carl Abbott of New Castle, Del.; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A son, Leroy "Bud" Abbott, died in 1957.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to BAWAC, 7970 Kentucky Drive, Florence, Ky. 41042.
