Carletta Wolf Smith, devoted nurse
Carletta Wolfe Smith comforted the sick and dying as a nurse in the cancer unit of St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
After 15 years, she decided she had enough of watching people die from the terrible disease, so she switched jobs and worked as a home- health nurse for Olsten Nursing Service.
Last year, cancer again touched Mrs. Smith, when she herself was diagnosed with the disease. The Alexandria resident had lung cancer, and she died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was 64.
"She was dedicated to the nursing profession," said her husband, Jack Smith. "She loved her family - she came from a big family - and she was constantly counseling them and comforting them when they were sick.
"She just liked taking care of other people, making sure they were comfortable."
Mrs. Smith grew up with eight brothers and sisters in Falmouth. She was trained as a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, where she graduated from the nursing program in 1955.
She met her husband in Lexington while he was attending the University of Kentucky. They married in 1955, and she took a job with Good Samaritan Hospital while he finished college.
They had one child, daughter Jackie Kyle of Ft. Thomas.
In 1958, the couple moved to Ft. Thomas, and Mrs. Smith worked for three years as director of nursing at Sheltering Oaks, a geriatric hospital affiliated with Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati.
She then took a nursing job at St. Luke, where she worked for about 15 years, mostly in the cancer unit. She left briefly to work at Speers Hospital in Dayton, but returned to St. Luke.
The last 10 years, Mrs. Smith worked as a home health nurse.
"I think the cancer ward kind of got to her. . .So she resigned and worked for Olsten. . .where she wasn't dealing with terminally ill people all the time," her husband said.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed visiting her family. Before moving to Alexandria, Mrs. Smith often saw her parents or siblings several times a day, Mr. Smith said.
"She was dedicated to her family," he said.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Cold Spring Baptist Church and the Pendleton County Country Club.
Besides her husband and daughter, other survivors include her mother, Hilda Auchter Wolfe of Falmouth; sisters, Geri Hampton of Ft. Thomas and Paula Wolfe of Alexandria; brothers, Boyd Wolfe and Donnie Wolfe, both of Falmouth, Clarence Wolfe of Butler and Rick Wolfe of Bellevue; and one grandson.
