Bernard Kroger Jr., insurance agent
Travel, and looking after the interests of others who traveled, were important in the life of Bernard H. Kroger Jr.
Mr. Kroger, 77, of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He operated the Ben H. Kroger and Son Insurance Agency on Dixie Highway in Lakeside Park for some 30 years, and retired in 1977.
"He was an independent insurance man who handled life, home and auto insurance. He took a personal interest in those whose insurance he wrote. He would get calls at home at all hours from policy holders, and did whatever he had to do, including going to their homes or assuring them they were covered," said his son, Frank E. Kroger of Walton.
"Everyone was sad when he retired, but they could understand it," he said of the irregular hours.
Traveling was also important to his father, Frank Kroger said. "When he and my mother were married, in 1950, they drove to Acapulco, Mexico. That was quite a trip in those days," he said.
Mr. Kroger's love of travel promoted his early retirement, and he and his wife traveled to many areas of the United States and sometimes abroad, his son said. Earlier on, Mr. Kroger also centered vacations around travel, to expose the family to various experiences, his son said.
Mr. Kroger was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Signal Corps in the Philippines and Japan. He was a member of the Greater Cincinnati Insurance Agents Association and Lakeside Park Civic Club, and a former member of Erlanger Lions Club. He was a sports fan who until recent years closely followed the Cincinnati Reds, Frank Kroger said.
Mr. Kroger was also a handy person around the house and loved to fix things. In retirement, he took up the hobby of collecting fluorescent beer signs, combing flea markets for items and often fixing them in his home, Frank Kroger said.
"He felt comfortable working on fluorescent signs and had a collection of about 200 of them."
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, June Kohorst Kroger; son, B. H. Kroger III of Ft. Mitchell a daughter, Mary Kay Markgraf of Lakeside Park; and 11 grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Ft. Mitchell. Mr. Kroger's body has been donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament School, 2415 Dixie Highway, Ft. Mitchell, Ky. 41017; or the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
