Paul Drake Sr., Kenton bailiff, shopkeeper
Paul H. Drake Sr. held many jobs in his life, from newspaper reporter to court bailiff, and he did them all with a light heart, a sense of humor and a smile.
"He loved life. He never met a stranger," recalled Kenton District Court Judge William Schmaedecke, whom Mr. Drake served as a bailiff for some 15 years.
Mr. Drake, 76, of Visalia, died Thursday in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Fla.
After retiring as a Kenton County deputy sheriff, he and his wife spent part of each year in the Clearwater area.
Mr. Drake worked as a deputy and court bailiff under three Kenton County sheriffs, Jim Crowell, Buck Lucas and Bill Stenken, recalled his wife, Juanita G. Hammons Drake.
Mr. Drake was also a store owner and tavern keeper, and a salesman of both razor blades and liquor. He worked for a number of years at the entrance gate at Latonia Race Course, now Turfway Park.
One of his early jobs was with The Kentucky Post. "He was the first one to know of the invasion of Normandy as it came over the Teletype," said Mrs. Drake.
For several years Mr. Drake owned and operated Drake's General Store and Tavern, along Decoursey Pike in Visalia. The premises has since burned, Mrs. Drake said.
"One of his great hobbies was going to the races. He was a person who could never sit still. He always had to be doing something," said Mrs. Drake.
"He wasn't only my bailiff, he was my co-worker. His death is like losing a brother. He was a very devoted family man," said Schmaedecke.
A native of Covington, Mr. Drake was a former member of both Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and St. Matthew/St. Mary Church, Morning View. He was a member of Wang Doodle Social Club, Covington, and the Democratic Club of Kenton County.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters, Susan C. Thompson of Denver and Mary K. Ficke of Lakeside Park; sons, Paul H. Drake Jr. of Seattle, David L. Drake of Independence, James S. Drake of Taylor Mill, Mark K. Drake of Dayton, Ohio, and Daniel W. Drake of Wilmington, N.C.; stepsons, Earl E. Casey of Akron, Ohio, and A.
