Russell 'Coke' Hall, served as lawmaker, Walton mayor
Russell "Coke" Hall never forgot a face and was always quick with a joke.
"He could meet someone and get their name. Five years later, he could see them walking down Vine Street in Cincinnati, and he would remember who they were," said his stepson, Charles W. Holder of Walton. "He always had a word for you, a last line."
Mr. Hall's special memory came in handy when he served as mayor of Walton in the 1950s and later as a two-term state representative.
"He was very dedicated in public life. He had a good mind to him," Mr. Holder said.
Mr. Hall, 90, of Walton, died at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.
Mr. Hall was born in Grant County and spent most of his life in Northern Kentucky.
He earned his nickname as a child, walking away from a sledding accident, unfazed after crashing into a tree.
"Boy, you got a head as hard as a coconut," a friend told him that day. The name stuck.
As state representative, Mr. Hall was instrumental in establishing Big Bone Lick State Park for Northern Kentucky.
He was appointed to the Boone County Planning and Zoning Commission, and was a former manager for the Community Public Service
utility company, Walton. He also was a former clerk and manager of the A&P Grocery Stores in Northern Kentucky. A son, District Court Judge Robert L. Hall, died in 1989.
Mr. Holder said his stepfather was a dedicated public servant, tending to the little things like keeping the streets clean and stepping up in times of need.
He recalls his stepfather soliciting the help of U.S. Rep. Brent Spence when Walton's water reservoir was nearly empty.
With Mr. Spence's help, Mr. Hall procured and had assembled three miles of surplus pipe that was connected to Boone Lake.
Mr. Hall had a long and happy marriage to Ruth Hall, who died in 1994. Mr. Holder said they were active together in a bridge club and loved vacationing.
An avid gardener, Mr. Hall shared his harvests with friends and neighbors.
Other survivors include four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Maplewood Children's Home, in care of Boone County Human Services, 2950 Washington , Burlington, Ky. 41005; or Walton Christian Church, 50 S. Main St., Walton, Ky. 41094.
