Erlanger's John R. Thiel, truck driver
When John Russell Thiel wasn't driving trucks or working as an insurance salesman, he could be found on a golf course.
"He loved to play golf," said his wife, Evelyn Thiel. "He played as often as he could."
Mr. Thiel, who his wife said had friends "from everywhere," died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. The Erlanger man was 71.
He grew up in Erlanger and had a daughter, Sherry Lane Dillon, who now lives in Boston, with his first wife.
He married his second wife, Evelyn Thiel, in 1950 and the couple had a son, Greg Thiel of Erlanger.
Mr. Thiel supported his family for more than 20 years by driving trucks. He retired from Spector Trucking when he was about 57.
"He just wanted to be out of the trucking business a while," said his wife, whom he met while living in Virginia.
He sold insurance for about three or four years, until his health began to deteriorate.
Mr. Thiel enjoyed attending church on Sundays at Grace Baptist in Boone County. He also loved to talk, his wife said.
"He was a big talker," she said. He talked about "any and everything."
Mr. Thiel also was a member of Teamsters Local No. 100 in Cincinnati. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife, daughter and son, other survivors include five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
