Margaret Bauman remembered as kind and generous neighbor
Margaret Bauman was a gentle Southern lady who loved flowers and her neighbors.
Mrs. Bauman, 87, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
She lived with quiet grace, tending her garden, providing a good home for her husband, and creating intricately crocheted tablecloths and bedspreads, said a friend and neighbor, Patricia Mueller of Covington.
Mrs. Bauman crocheted delicate trims on pillow cases, towels and sheets and gave them to the neighbors for Christmas, Mrs. Mueller said.
Mrs. Bauman and her husband, Alexander, were from Tennessee. He worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He moved to Northern Kentucky for the work, and in 1933 returned to Tennessee to marry his sweetheart and bring her north.
In 1940 they moved to High Street in West Covington, and they stayed there for the rest of their lives.
"He worked and she was a homemaker," Mrs. Mueller said.
They didn't have any children, but Mrs. Bauman became a favorite aunt and later a second grandmother to neighborhood children.
"She was very intelligent and quiet, like a Southern lady," said Mrs. Mueller, who had known Mrs. Bauman for 45 years.
"This is a small street and an old-fashioned neighborhood. She was a good neighbor - generous, kind."
Mrs. Bauman was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Covington, the Rosebud Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star and West Covington Senior Citizens. She supported several animal-rights organizations.
Alexander Bauman died in 1968. But Mrs. Bauman remained an independent widow whose only concession to age was slowly converting her garden from annual flowers that must be replanted each year to spring bulbs and perennials that return each year.
She would spend holidays with Mrs. Mueller's family.
She fell 10 years ago, and that slowed her pace. She recently was diagnosed with cancer and had moved to St. Charles Care Center a few weeks ago.
Survivors include her brother, Joseph Cooper of Visalia, Calif.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1229 Highway Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.
