Highland Heights' Harry A. Stiers, officer, firefighter, Marine instructor
Duty and honor had long been instilled in Harry A. Stiers Jr. before he entered the Marine Corps, and they were part of his life long afterward.
Mr. Stiers, a former captain and assistant chief with the Highland Heights police department and an active member of the Highland Heights Volunteer Fire Department, was a drill instructor in the Marine Corps.
"When he wasn't serving his country, he was serving his community. It was something that was within him since birth," said his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Stiers.
Mr. Stiers, 47, died Saturday at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Fla., of lung cancer.
Mr. Stiers retired from the Marine Corps in 1979, a decorated staff sergeant who earned the Purple Heart while fighting in Vietnam. He served in the Corps for 12 years, traveling the world three times over.
He returned home to Highland Heights, where he became a police officer and firefighter. He also was an emergency medical technician and a founding member of the Campbell County Water Rescue unit.
He was always ready to help neighbors in need.
"Being a Marine drill instructor, he wasn't a touchy kind of guy. But he was a caring person," said his wife. "He wasn't emotional, but you could tell how much he cared about something by his actions."
The Highland Heights Volunteer Fire Department, by way of returning his loyalty, will host memorial services Saturday.
"We realized that all of our friends are firefighters and police officers, so everyone who would be family would be there. They would know that was our life," said Mrs. Stiers.
Mr. Stiers was a member of Newport Elks Lodge No. 273 in Cold Spring, a Mason with the Alexandria Masonic Lodge, and Disabled American Veterans. He also was a Kentucky Admiral.
The Stiers retired to Bradenton in 1996, but Mr. Stiers' dedication to protecting the community in which he grew up will continue after his death. He donated his body for organ donations and his family suggests memorial donations be given to the Highland Heights Volunteer Fire Department, Mrs. Stiers said.
Other survivors include his daughters, Denita Stiers of Newport and Michelle Caudill of Highland Heights; sons, Darrick Stiers of Portland, Ore., and Douglas Stiers of Bradenton, Fla.; his mother, Ruth Stiers of Highland Heights; brothers, Michael Stiers of Ross and Mark Stiers of Highland Heights; and a sister, Patricia Stiers Ross of Cold Spring.
