Ft. Wright's Anthony Burk, engineer
Anthony Burk's work as a mechanical engineer took him places - including to Johannesburg, South Africa.
He, his wife and children lived there for more than a year in the mid-1960s while he helped build a chemical plant.
"We had a regular house, and it was just like living here in Cincinnati, only it was like a retro trip back 10 or 20 years," said one of Mr. Burk's six children, David Burk of Ft. Wright.
"It was like a step into the past. He must have liked it, though, because he took the whole family up."
Anthony Burk, of Ft. Wright, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 75.
He grew up in Covington with three brothers and two sisters and went to school at Holy Cross High School. He also attended the Ohio Mechanical Institute and took engineering courses at the University of Cincinnati.
Shortly after he graduated from UC, Mr. Burk enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Germany and earned a purple heart and a bronze star.
"He was shot in the chest," David Burk said. "The bullet entered right in the heart area, missed his heart, collapsed his lung, hit a rib and bounced and came out under his arm.
"But he survived and was just fine. That's how tough my dad was."
David Burk married his wife of 53 years, Gladys Hurst Burk, in 1944. She gave birth to the first of their children in 1947, David Burk said. They lived in Lookout Heights, now part of Ft. Wright, before leaving for South Africa.
When the family returned from overseas, Mr. Burk took a job with the former Emery Industries in Cincinnati in the mid-1960s. He worked there for about eight years until he retired because of heart problems, David Burk said.
He was a former president of the Hilltoppers Senior Citizens of Ft. Wright, the Knights of Columbus in Ludlow, and the Independent Order of Forresters. He also was a member of American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia and the Disabled American Veterans.
"He was a friendly guy. He liked to share experiences, watch other people and learn," David Burk said. "He was a strong family man. He devoted his life to raising his children. He had a strong sense of values, and he always was a fighter. He never gave up."
In addition to his wife and son, survivors include sons, Anthony Burk II of Cincinnati, Robert Stephen Burk of Ft. Wright, and Kevin L. Burk of Edgewood; daughters, Sylvia Burk Hudepohl of Cincinnati and Pamela Burk Seifert of Villa Hills; brothers, Edward Burk of Crescent Springs and James Burk of Edgewood; sisters, Rosemary Raybourne of Walton and Lenora Korte of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Ft. Wright.
Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.
