Kahn's veteran George S. Sowers, helped Hebron Baptist Church thrive
George S. Sowers played a leading role in the growth of Hebron Baptist Church.
"He was there when the church first met in a lodge hall, and he was involved in the loan for the first building," Robin E. Sowers McArter, of Munfordville, said of her father.
Mr. Sowers, 71, of Hebron, died Saturday in Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.
The Hebron church ultimately had three building additions and the parking lot was expanded two or three times, Mrs. McArter said. As a church trustee, and as a handyman, her father was involved with all the expansions, she said.
"He put the first sound system in the church," Mrs. McArter said.
Mr. Sowers gained his electronic skills by attending school at night while working during the days as a meatpacker at Kahn's Meatpacking Co., Cincinnati. He then became an electrician with the company, working there 43 years before retiring about a decade ago, said Mrs. McArter.
Her father utilized his skills in helping neighbors, as well as the church, Mrs. McArter said. He also worked evenings as a television repairman, often donating his work when the customer couldn't afford to pay, she said.
"People always counted on him. He was the one everyone depended upon," said Mrs. McArter.
During his vacations, Mr. Sowers often worked on remodeling his own home, she said.
An Army veteran, Mr. Sowers was a former union steward at Kahn's.
Her father liked to fish and garden, and helped his brother-in-law with an annual bluegrass music event held in Boone County, Mrs. McArter said.
Other survivors include his wife, Ardath I. Sowers; sons, Michael S. Sowers of Hebron and Edwin K. Sowers of Middleburg, Fla.; brothers, J. C. Sowers of Nicholasville, William G. Sowers of Hebron and Sherman L. Sowers of Kings Mountain; a sister, Reba I. Robertson of Waynesburg; and six grandchildren.
