Mr. Sanders, community stalwart
Jess Sanders Jr.'s family spent many nights huddled around a police radio, worried that this time, the Covington police officer wouldn't make it home alive.
But Mr. Sanders' wife and five children were always in the back of his mind while working as an officer, and later as chief of detectives, for the Covington Police Department. One way or another, sometimes bruised and bloodied, he returned safely to his family.
"When your dad is on the street, you're acutely aware that every time he goes out, he'll never come back," said a son, Robert Edward Sanders of Covington. "Literally hundreds of times, we sat around a monitor, listening to police exchanges and praying to God when the emergencies were over, he'd be safe."
Mr. Sanders, whose law enforcement career in Northern Kentucky spanned 45 years, died at 3:13 p.m. Wednesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. The Covington resident was 80.
He grew up in Latonia and graduated from Holmes High School in Covington in the mid-1930s. He and his brother were talented baseball, basketball and football athletes, Robert Sanders said.
He married his wife of 60 years, Anna Margaret Sanders, in 1937, and they raised their family in Covington.
Following in the footsteps of his father, who as a 14-year-old left his rural home in Carroll County eventually to become a police officer, Mr. Sanders joined the Covington police force in 1942.
When he retired in 1975, he held the rank of lieutenant colonel and had served as chief of the crime bureau for about 12 years. He acted bravely and intelligently in every situation, said Robert Sanders, who, as a prosecuting attorney, worked several cases with his father.
"There were a great number of occasions when someone pulled a gun on him. There were many occasions when he certainly would have been justified using deadly force, but he never did," Robert Sanders said. "He dealt with it in other ways."
Mr. Sanders was actively involved in promoting the welfare of the community. He was a founding member of the Kenton County Boys' Club in the early 1950s. As head of the traffic department for the police department, he also was instrumental in helping reduce traffic fatalities and promote highway safety.
He received numerous awards for civil law enforcement and, in 1952, he was awarded the title of Outstanding Man of the Year by the Covington Jaycees.
"He was dedicated to public service, and the focus of his professional life was always to make his world a better place to live - and his world was primarily Covington, and secondly, Northern Kentucky," Robert Sanders said.
Following retirement from the police department, Mr. Sanders served as a patrolman for five years with Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's police department, and seven years as a deputy sheriff in Kenton County.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 109 in Covington, where he was a 32nd degree mason, a member of Latonia Christian Church, acting president of the Covington Retired Police Officers Association and a former director and past president of the Covington City Employees Credit Union.
He was a member of the Kentucky Police Officers Association, a charter member of Covington Fraternal Order of Police No. 1, and a former member of Indra Consistory of Scottish Rite in Covington.
Other survivors include his wife, Anna Margaret Sanders; other sons, Capt. Donald Jess Sanders of Rising Sun, Ind., Richard Raymond Sanders of Warsaw, and Jeffrey Michael Sanders of Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Mary Edith Sanders of Covington; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation is from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, with police honor guard. A police escort will lead to burial in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Memorials suggested to Covington Police Athletic League or Kenton County Boys and Girls Club.
