William L. Terlau, built homes
William L. Terlau built homes throughout his lifetime and was still pouring concrete on one as late as a few months ago.
"The man's hobby was work," said Mr. Terlau's son, Tom Terlau of Ft. Wright.
Mr. Terlau, 80, of Independence, died Friday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
A self-employed brick contractor, Mr. Terlau built homes for his family as well as for others. "He built every house we ever lived in," said Tom Terlau.
Mr. Terlau grew up during the Depression, lost his mother while still young and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
The experiences left an impression on him and encouraged him to work hard and be independent, Tom Terlau said.
His father was a true entrepreneur, Tom Terlau said. "He was a wheeler-dealer even in the service, making money and then sending it home."
Immediately after the war Mr. Terlau worked in Detroit and then owned a tavern on U.S. 25, his son said. He learned the brick mason's trade and was in construction ever since.
Mr. Terlau loved the outdoors and gardening but didn't get to spend as much time with either as he would have liked because of the demands of work, Tom Terlau said.
"He always liked to make people laugh. Along with work, he learned that material things weren't so important as his family and friends," Tom Terlau said of his father.
Mr. Terlau's wife, Patricia Boley Terlau, and a son, Stephen W. Terlau, both preceded him in death.
Other survivors include a son, Tim Terlau of Loveland, Ohio; daughters, Michele Hudson of Crestview Hills and Marita Arlinghaus of Edgewood; a brother, Jack Terlau of Erlanger; and sisters, Mary Crotty of Villa Hills, Vera Remke of Lakeside Park, and Kathleen Terlau of Hendersonville, N.C.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Ft. Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.
