Mary Kenney, school lunch lady
Mary Kenney spent much of her life making sure her children, grandchildren and students at St. Michael Elementary and Newport Central Catholic High schools were well-fed.
For more than 40 years, she volunteered in the school cafeterias, helping prepare students' lunches. She did it to be closer to her family, said a daughter, Mary Sharp of Bellevue.
"It just seemed she was always there for us, anything we ever needed," Ms. Sharp said.
Mrs. Kenney died at 6:39 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. The lifelong Bellevue resident was 72.
She married her husband, the late Jack Kenney, in 1947. The couple had five children, and Mrs. Kenney began working in the school cafeterias when her children started going to school at St. Michael.
In 1989, Mrs. Kenney also began helping Ms. Sharp prepare students' lunches at Newport Catholic, where Ms. Sharp's oldest son went to school. Mrs. Kenney continued working there even after her grandson graduated.
After her husband died in 1992, Mrs. Kenney also began volunteering at Hosea House, where she answered telephones and helped serve food.
"When she was real young, probably around 30, she also helped her sister, who owned a grocery store. She helped her out all the time," Ms. Sharp said. "That's just how she was: She just loved helping out."
Mrs. Kenney also was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue and an active member of the Christian Mothers club.
Other survivors include a son, Col. John M. Kenney of Dale City, Va.; daughters, Kathy William of Dayton, Patricia Poettker of Batesville, Ind., Alice Kenney of Bellevue; brothers, Ray Bricking Sr. of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Albert Bricking of Bellevue; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
