Conner grad, artist J. Matt Figgins, DHL agent, aspiring air mechanic
Liver cancer didn't keep 22-year-old J. Matt Figgins from doing the things he loved: going to college to be an aircraft mechanic, loading and unloading aircraft for a local airline, developing his artistic talent.
For four years, he did these things and suffered through chemotherapy treatments that often made him sick and weak.
The 1994 Conner Senior High School graduate died Wednesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
"He's been such a courageous guy," said his mother, Brenda Figgins of Burlington.
"He touched so many people's lives in his young, short years. So many people have called saying he was such a great inspiration."
Mr. Figgins was born in Seattle and spent his infancy in Bitburg, Germany, where his father was stationed with the U.S. Air Force.
The family moved to Mountain Home, Idaho, when Mr. Figgins was about 5, his mother said. The family lived there for about seven years before moving to Northern Kentucky.
In Burlington, Mr. Figgins played football for Conner High School and developed his talent for art. His specialty was pointillism.
"He was a great art student," Brenda Figgins said. "He did a lot of art work for doctors' offices - brochure-type art - and for school, he did two years of the sports magazine cover."
His father's involvement in the Air Force inspired Mr. Figgins' love for aircraft. He worked for three years as a ramp agent at DHL Worldwide Express, and becoming a supervisor.
He was studying at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College to become an aircraft mechanic. At the same time, he was receiving aggressive treatment for cancer.
"That was what was so amazing," Brenda Figgins said. "He worked every night outside up until January.
"He was dedicated. There he could be normal, he wasn't sick, and no one would know he had cancer."
Mr. Figgins also enjoyed riding all-terrain vehicles, using computers and playing paint ball.
Other survivors include his father, Wayne Figgins of Burlington, and a sister, Lisa Slaughter of Boise, Idaho.
