Nancy Helen 'Nenaw' Dickens

Nancy Helen "Nenaw" Dickens, 68, of 4116 Jefferson St., Owensboro, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at her home. She was born on July 30, 1937, in Daviess County. She worked at GE for 12 years, but was also a homemaker. She was a Christian and loved bingo and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, James Ray Sheriff; two sisters, Ruby Hoagland and Linda Sandefur; and three brothers, William, Charles and Darrell Sheriff.

She was survived by her husband of 51 years, Allen Dickens; a son, Rocky Dickens of Owensboro; two daughters, Rhonda Stallings and Sherry Able, both of Owensboro; her mother, Flora Mae Sheriff; nine grandchildren, Michelle Dickens McDowell, Dustin Dickens, Kelsey Dixon, Krystal Wathen, Heath Stallings, Ethan Stallings, Jordan Able, Brandon Carter and Kaylee Carter; and three sisters, the Rev. Mary Sue Gaddis, Bunny McCarty and Kathryn Fenwick, all of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Liberty Lighthouse.

Larry Kent Kirk

Larry Kent Kirk, 57, of Henderson died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born Jan. 12, 1948, in Evansville to Kenneth Kirk and Azalee Chinn Kirk. He had worked at Accuride Corp. in Henderson as a senior lab technician and was a member of Hartford Baptist Church and an officer in the American Legion, Henderson Post. He retired from the National Guard with the rank of platoon sergeant after 32 years of military service, and he had been deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom in Germany in 2002. He was preceded in death by his mother, Azalee "Coonie" Chinn Kirk on March 20, 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Leigh Blue Kirk of Henderson; a son, Samuel T. Kirk of Lexington; a daughter, Amanda E. Kirk of Henderson; a sister, Rebecca Inez Kirk and her husband, John Harper, and their three children of Grand Rapids, Mich.; his father and stepmother, Kenneth and Shirley Kirk of Hartford; his mother-in-law, Jean Blue; his in-laws, John and Vicki Blue, Joe and Tammy Blue and Jason and Karen Blue; and six nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford with the Rev. Wesley Hanson officiating and assisted by Brother Randy Kirk. Military services will be in Morganfield conducted by the Marion National Guard. Burial will be in St. Ann's cemetery in Morganfield. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 401, Hartford, KY 42347.

Virgil Lee Haycraft

SAMPLE - Virgil Lee Haycraft, 77, of Sample died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Medco Center in Hardinsburg. He was a retired construction worker, an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Sample United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Ernest Haycraft, Gary Haycraft and Steven Haycraft; four daughters, Dianne Staples, Bonnie Bozarth, Donna Blair and Darlene Miller; and a sister, Jean Horsley.

Services: Noon Wednesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Sample cemetery. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Margaret A. Dowell

BEAVER DAM - Margaret A. Dowell, 95, of Beaver Dam died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Beaver Dam Health Care Manor. She was born in Ohio County and was a nurse. She graduated from Chicago School of Nursing and was a member of Beaver Dam United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. and Bernice Fulkerson; and a daughter, Freda Simpson.

Survivors include four sons, Roscoe "Sonny" Simpson Jr. and wife Pat Simpson of Beaver Dam, Charles Robert and wife Diane Simpson of Hartford, Rodney Dowell of Beaver Dam and John and wife Ernie Dowell of Owensboro; four daughters, Ouida "Dolly" Burton of Arizona, Violet Lutz of Hartford, Linda Carden of Hartford and Karen and husband David Stevens of Danville; 39 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with the Rev. Anthony Goff officiating. Burial will be in Pond Run cemetery in Echols. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Ann Butler

CALHOUN - Elizabeth Ann Butler, 85, of Calhoun died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Riverside Manor Health Care Center in Calhoun. She was a homemaker.

Services: 11 a.m. EDT today at Bethany cemetery in Louisville. Muster Funeral Homes in Calhoun is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Small Carter

Rose Small Carter, 79, of Owensboro, found peace at 3:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, after a long, courageous battle against multiple illnesses. Born June 5, 1926, she was a lifelong resident of Owensboro, where she retired from General Electric after 30 years of service. She later became employed at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where she greatly enjoyed the fellowship with the students as well as faithfully attending basketball games. As a devoted member of the charismatic faith, she found fulfillment in serving God and helping those in need. She often volunteered at the Elizabeth Munday Senior Center and was a member of the Golden Partners. Many of those she touched while volunteering knew her as "Sunshine." Her ability to find humor in any situation brought light to even the darkest days. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eula Mae Self; her father, Sylvester "Lefty" Self; and her brother, Harold Eugene Self.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Small Durbin and Janice Hardesty Simmons, both of Owensboro; a brother, Bobby Ray Self of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Todd Hardesty and Kristen Hardesty, both of Owensboro; a great-grandson, Todd Hardesty Jr. of Owensboro; a niece, Gayla Westerfield of Owensboro; five nephews, Glenn Self, Byron Self, Darryl Self and Bobby Self Jr., all of Owensboro, and Dale Self of St. Louis; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and her cherished pets that never left her side, "Diamond" and "Blackie."

Services are at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Rose L. Carter Memorial Fund, c/o James H. Davis Funeral Home, 3009 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Mattie Richardson

HAWESVILLE - Mattie Richardson, 78, of Louisville died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at Audubon Hospital in Louisville. She was born in Hawesville on Feb. 17, 1927, to the late Waldo and Ellen Barker Tindle. She owned and operated two restaurants in Louisville. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include six sons, Charles Flake of Biloxi, Miss., and Terry Flake, Chester Flake, David Edwards, Donald Flake and Harold McNeal, all of Louisville; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Mae Horsley of Maceo; two brothers, Waldo R. Tindle and Ruben T. Tindle of Hawesville; six half sisters, Mary Agnes Young, Dorothy Payne, Peggy Smith, Pauline Sutherland and Joanne Decker, all of Hawesville, and Genevie Knopp of Louisville; and two half brothers, O.W. Tindle Jr. of Hawesville and John Wayne Tindle of Hartford.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Francis Bruce and the Rev. Brian Adkins. Burial will be in Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 7 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

John Riggs

CALHOUN - John Riggs, 83, of 780 Main St., Calhoun, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at Riverside Manor Health Care Center in Calhoun. Marvin Earl Riggs was born March 21, 1922, in the Livia area of McLean County to the late Hugh and Mae Taylor Riggs and was better known as "John" by his family and friends. John was a retired farmer and a member of Pleasant Hope General Baptist Church and McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5415. He was an Army combat veteran of World War II. John saw action in the Rhineland and was a prisoner of war in Germany for several months. He also enjoyed being on the farm and working with horses.

Survivors include two brothers and their wives, Clayton and Maxine Riggs and Gibson and Lillie Riggs, both of Calhoun; four sisters and their husbands, Nadine and William Bennett and Sally Betsy Wacker, all of Owensboro, Lorene and Donald Penrod of Calhoun and Alice and Donald Harness of Lawrenceville, Ill.; two nephews, Steve Riggs and Hugh Penrod; and three nieces, Rhonda Pendley, Sally Jo LaBounty and Marsha.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel, with the Rev. Ron Hampton and the Rev. Steve Dame officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hope cemetery with military honors conducted by McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5415. Friends may visit with the Riggs family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at Muster's in Calhoun.

Timothy Mark Whitworth

ISLAND - Timothy Mark Whitworth, 39, of Island died Tuesday evening, Aug. 9, 2005, as a result of a boating accident. He was born July 4, 1966, to Willis and Mary Poole Whitworth in Hardin County. He worked in landscaping and enjoyed fishing and boating.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mary Daugherty and her husband, Dennis, of Owensboro; his father, Willis Whitworth Jr. of Hartford; three brothers, James Whitworth of Maceo, Ronald Whitworth of Island and Glenn Whitworth of Owensboro; a sister, Susan Brockwell of Owensboro; his grandmother, Annie Poole of Owensboro; a friend, Alex Linares of Louisville; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Timothy Whitworth Memorial Fund, c/o Mary Daugherty, 1122 E. Fifth St., Owensboro, KY 42303.

John T. Bristow

John T. Bristow, 86, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at his home after a brief illness. Born in Owensboro on May 22, 1919, Mr. Bristow was the son of the late Guy and Rosalie Patrick Bristow. He retired as owner-operator of Bristow's Motor Sales after 45 years and also operated a Marathon Service Station at the corner of Main and Woodford streets for more than 23 years. He was a member of Hall Street Baptist Church, where he was a member and secretary of the Fisherman's Sunday school class. Mr. Bristow enjoyed cars, dancing, fishing and playing cards with his friends. He and Mrs. Bristow organized the local chapter of Compassionate Friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary "Bobo" Bristow, in 1974; and a sister, Jo Ann McGhee.

Mr. Bristow is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martine Jones Bristow; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Karen Bristow of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Andy Bristow and Laura Bristow, both of Owensboro; three great-grandchildren, Trevor Thomas Bristow, Jonathan Thomas Brown and Queelyn Coriana Brown, all of Owensboro; and two sisters, Dorothy (and Ertis) Cox of Owensboro and Shirley (and Tony) Ayers of Louisville.

Funeral services are at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hall Street Baptist Church Sunday School Department.

Ira Lee Crowe

Ira Lee Crowe, 82, of Whitesville and Owensboro died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System after a lengthy illness. He was born near Whitesville to Ira and Lula Crowe on Feb. 15, 1923. He was a member and deacon of Whitesville Baptist Church and a 50-year member of A.G. Hodges Masonic Lodge 297 in Whitesville. He was the longtime proprietor of the Sunoco Gas station and Mils Dairy Drive-in in Whitesville. An Army veteran, he served on the Whitesville City Commission from 1987 to 1991. He supervised Cates cemetery and supported many civic activities. He was preceded in death by Rose Brooks Crowe, James David Crowe, Ira Lee Crowe III and Mathew Ross.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Gray Crowe of Owensboro; two sons, Frank Crowe of Athens, Ga., and Robert (Mary Ann) Crowe of Owensboro; and a daughter, Joan (Charles) Morton of Niles, Mich. His stepchildren are Mike (Mary Pat) Gray of Hawesville, David (Dianna) Gray of Pleasant Ridge and Kim Murley of Owensboro. Mr. Crowe had 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Louella C. Roberts; and a brother, Finley (Todd) Crowe, both of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Whitesville Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Mr. Crowe will lie in state at the church from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tim Burdon, assisted by the Rev. Scott Casebier. Burial will follow in Cates cemetery.
