Rebecca Brooker, taught home economics in Boone, Campbell
When Sheldon Brooker first laid eyes on his bride-to-be at a dance a dozen years ago, he knew she was special.
"It sounds like a story out of a book, but when I took hold of her hand 12 years ago, I knew it just that quick," he said.
Rebecca Carloss Page Brooker had that kind of an effect on people. She helped and encouraged hundreds of women during her nearly 20 years as a home economics extension agent in Boone and Campbell counties.
"I'm guessing that if the 'Get Well' cards are any indication, I'll bet there are 2,000 people at her visitation," Mr. Brooker said. "To know her was to love her."
Mrs. Brooker died Thursday at her home in Florence. She was 59.
Mrs. Brooker was born and reared in Lexington.
She was the University of Kentucky's home economics extension agent in Campbell County from 1978 to 1989 and in Boone County from 1989 to 1998.
Early in her career, a group of business and professional women selected her as one of the top five Women of Achievement in Northern Kentucky.
Mrs. Brooker went on to win seven National Association of Extension Home Economists awards.
She poured her heart into the job, her husband said.
"She taught crafts," Mr. Brooker said. "She taught low-budget families how to budget their money and how to eat nutritiously."
Mrs. Brooker was one of the first extension agents appointed to the original UK College of Agriculture Water Quality Task Force in 1990 and helped coordinate the first Kentucky Water Awareness Month activities.
Mrs. Brooker was president of the Kentucky Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences in 1997.
She was adviser to Homemakers Associations in Boone and Campbell counties.
During the annual "Holiday Panorama" at Christmastime, she traveled to nine counties to teach women how to make festive decorations and gifts. And she always found time to make presents for her family, like the vests she made for her grandchildren.
"She was just a go-getter," said her husband. "There were points where she worked 80 hours a week."
Other survivors include sons, Thomas W. Page of Charlotte, N.C., Richard C. Page of Lexington, David M. Page of Florence and Russell Brooker of Abilene, Texas ; daughters, Rebecca Anne Schnitzler of Alexandria, Lishell Borg of Indianapolis and Deidre R. Fanning of Atlanta; her parents, Harry and Rebecca Carloss of Lexington; brothers, James Carloss of Lexington and Dr. Harry Carloss Jr. of Paducah; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Boone County Extension Service Office.
Arrangements for services Monday in Lexington are pending with Milward Funeral Home in Lexington. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Ft. Thomas, 1031 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075; Central Christian Church, 205 E. Short St., Lexington, Ky. 40507; or the American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.
