Coach Bruce Embry, 63, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Daviess County on June 26, 1941, Mr. Embry was the son of the late Yondell M. Embry and Wannetta Amby Payne Embry. He was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral. Mr. Embry taught at Owensboro Catholic High School from 1968 to 2004. During his tenure at OCHS he taught mythology and English and was the head and assistant boys' basketball coach, head and assistant girls' basketball coach, assistant football coach, golf coach (winning Kentucky Coach of the Year honors), track coach, athletic director, the DARE program sponsor, created the OCHS SMART program, the founder of the OCHS Project Graduation Program, organized flag runs, sponsored the Western Kentucky Leadership Conference, assisted with senior retreats and established the Senior Snow Ball Dinner tradition. He was also the unofficial OCHS matchmaker and always had an open door policy at the school. Mr. Embry had a part in the never-released film titled "Marshall of Windy Hollow." Mr. Embry also enjoyed skeet, trapshooting and sporting clays. He was a state champion in all and competed nationally. Lastly, he was noted for his generosity.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janie Patterson Embry; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angel and Terry Payne, Cynthia and Bruce Galloway and Elizabeth and Rob Burnett, all of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Andrew Payne, Zachary Galloway, Joshua Galloway, Bethany Galloway and Meredith Burnett, all of Owensboro; and countless OCHS students and former students whose lives he touched.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Cathedral, with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. In Iieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Owensboro Catholic High School, Coach Bruce Embry Memorial Fund.
Verna Mae Allen Dukes

GREENVILLE - Verna Mae Allen Dukes, 81, of 675 Ken Lane, Greenville, died Wednesday morning, April 27, 2005, at 9:27 a.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several months' illness. She was born April 23, 1924, in Greenville, the daughter of Carl Edward Allen and Hazel Marie Crick Allen. She was a nurse's aide and had worked at Maple Manor and Belle Meade nursing homes before retiring. She was a member of Lead Hill United Methodist Church in Weir and was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Joseph Harold (Tom) Allen, on April 23, 2005, her birthday.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth Dukes of Greenville; two sons, William Keith (Charlotte) Dukes of Greenville and Terry L. (Linda) Dukes of Graham; a daughter, Glenda (Paul) Young of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty (Olton) Lee of Greenville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, by the Rev. Don Gabbard and the Rev. Tommy Tackett. Burial will be in Cave Spring cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Hazel Marie (Oglesby) Jackson

Hazel Marie (Oglesby) Jackson, 67, of 1216 Avondale Road, Owensboro, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Sept. 23, 1937, to the late Aubon Leo and Allie Brooks Oglesby in Henderson. She was a longtime member of Owensboro Christian Church, where she was involved in many ministries of the church. She was a homemaker and Kentucky Colonel and loved her family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Oglesby of Grayville, Ill.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Arthur (Art) Lee Jackson; three sons, Randy and his wife, Jackie Jackson, of Smyrna, Tenn., Larry Jackson of Antioch, Tenn., and Phillip Jackson of Owensboro; a daughter, Karen Posante of Owensboro; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo and his wife, Lorene Oglesby of Houston; a sister, Martha Hagan of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Ruby Falls Couty

HAWESVILLE - Ruby Falls Couty, 86, formerly of Hawesville, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, from a lengthy illness at the home of her daughter, Judy Gore of Owensboro. Ruby was the youngest of nine children born to the late James and America Emma Easton Falls. She was born Nov. 10, 1918, in Easton. She was a member of the Hawesville Baptist Church and a housewife. John Bertice Couty on March 21, 1942, and they were married
for 60 years. They made their home at their farm on Happy Hollow Road outside Hawesville until John's death in March 2003. Ruby loved to quilt and garden. She took pride in her cooking and loved to spend time with her family. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, John Bertice Couty, on March 5, 2003; and a son, Michael B. Couty, on Dec. 15, 1975.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley A. and Harold Keown of Crestview, Fla., Debra and Jimmy Owens of Lewisport and Judy and Mike Gore of Owensboro; grandchildren, Jesse Morris of Evansville, Karen Morris of Fort Myers, Fla., Kathy Brown of Philpot and Kaitlyn Gore and John M. Gore of Owensboro; four stepgrandchildren, Dana Eaton of Panama Beach, Fla., Shannon Boyd of Statesville, N.C., Shane Owens of Cleveland, N.C., and Kellie Gore of Grandview, Ind.; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bills Falls of Tell City, Ind.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Hawesville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Roberts and the Rev. Steve Ross officiating. Burial will be in Mount Eden Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. The family requests that donations be made to Hospice. Hobart Chancellor Jr.

FORDSVILLE - Hobart Chancellor Jr., 72, of Fordsville died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System after a long illness. He was born in Hancock Count on Oct. 4, 1932, the son of the late Hobart and Irene Chancellor. He was a retired farmer and member and deacon of Pisgah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Corley.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Nancy Hurst Chancellor of Fordsville; a daughter, Sharon McCarthy of Owensboro; a grandson, Eric Colburn of Owensboro; a granddaughter, Kalen Howard of Owensboro; a sister, Betty Davis of Newburgh, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville, with Brother James Jackson and Brother Ray Estes officiating. Burial will be in Beatty cemetery in Hancock County. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Wavie Bartley

BEECH GROVE - Wavie Bartley, 57, of Beech Grove died Saturday, April 30, 2005, in a fishing accident near Beech Grove. Wavie Bartley Jr. was born Nov. 11, 1947, in McLean County to the late Wavie and Laura Bush Bartley. Wavie was a member of the 1965 class of the former Calhoun High School and was married
to the former Maggie Lee Dukes on June 28, 1966. He was a lineman for the Kenergy Electrical Corp. and also served as a volunteer for the Beech Grove Fire Department. Wavie also enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and caring for his birds.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Maggie; two sons and their wives, Brian "Earl" and Cindy Bartley and Kelly "Fred" and Della Bartley, all of Beech Grove; a daughter and her husband, Wavina and Mike Cecil of Owensboro; eight grandchildren, Luke Cecil, Rusty Cook, Myles Sweat, Kayla Bartley, Niel Bartley, Alex Colburn, Jenna Bartley and Gatlin Cecil; three brothers, James Robert Bartley of Indianapolis; Otis Bartley of Sacramento and Dale Bartley of Beech Grove; two sisters, Fannie Harrington of Day Light, Ind., and Virginia Wright of Bremen; and several nieces and nephews.
Joint funeral services for Wavie and his son, Sam Bartley, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Midkiff and the Rev. Guy Haddock officiating. Burial will be in the Calhoun cemetery. Friends may visit with the Bartley family from 3 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Musters in Calhoun.

Ernest Lucky Staples Sr.

LOUISVILLE - Ernest Lucky Staples Sr., 60, of 1642 Longfield Ave., Louisville, went to his Heavenly Father on Monday, May 2, 2005, following a battle with cancer at his home. He was born Aug. 1, 1944, in Muhlenberg County. He was a self-employed building contractor and a member of Free Will Baptist Church in Louisville.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Pauline Staples of Louisville; a son, Ernest Jr. and Kristy Staples of Louisville; a daughter, Stacy and David Foley of Louisville; two stepdaughters, Vickie and Phil Stevens of Somerset and Rita and Sorb Chaharlang of Albuquerque, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; five sisters, Shirley and Mike Carver and Sue and Ray Piper, all of Belton, Dorothy and P.J. Piper of Beech Creek, Lois Toomey of Huntsville and Myrtle Dennis of Utica; and two brothers, Jimmy and Hilda Staples of Drakesboro and Rondal and Ruth Staples of Utica.
Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy J. Maynard presiding. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Butler County. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

David Thomas Nesmith, 46, of 944 Lakeside Green, Maceo, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Daviess County on Sept. 10, 1958, to the late Thomas Glenn and Edna L. (Dunn) Nesmith. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Nesmith, in 1989; and a sister, Glenda Kay McCarthy, in 1977.
He is survived by a daughter, Crystal Hagan of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Thomas and Hanna Hagan, both of Owensboro; three stepchildren, Charles Greathouse, Keisha Shadwick and Patricia Hagan; 10 stepgrandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Rohrer of Maceo, Wanda Brown and Faye O'Bryan, both of Owensboro, and Sue Williams of Smyrna, Tenn.; and two brothers, Samuel Hagan of Utica and Allen Hagan of Livia.
Services are at 4 p.m. today, April 26, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. HOPKINSVILLE - Mrs. Frazia Lee McDonald, 77, of Peppermint Drive, Hopkinsville, passed away at 5 a.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Marques Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Mrs. McDonald was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Hilham, Tenn., the daughter of the late Cordell H. Brown and Emma L. Brown. She was a manager at State Line Loan in Fort Campbell for 18 years. She was a member of Parkway Missionary Baptist Church, Pennyrile Doll Club, Queen City Doll Club, United Federation of Doll Clubs, Veterans Jr. Auxiliary, Fort Campbell Retired Officers Association, Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, Kentucky Colonel and worked with the American Cancer Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin William Jay McDonald, on Nov. 18, 1979; and her son, Kenneth Dale Hyams, on Nov. 5, 1993.
Survivors include a son, John Charles McDonald of Phoenix; three daughters, Kathie F. Wallace of Hopkinsville, Connie Beth Noel of Fairview and Frazia Lynn Cox of Clarksville, Tenn.; four brothers, Manuel Brown and Paul Brown, both of Cadiz, Howard Brown of Owensboro and Dwight L. Brown of Gracey; two sisters, Frances E. Almy of Hopkinsville and Min Greil of Waterford, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Virginia 'Mickey' Knott

Virginia "Mickey" Knott of 2136 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was the daughter of the late Charles Houston Burks and Willie Reid Benton Burks of Utica. She was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and the Mary Lou Phillips Sunday school class. She was a loving mother and homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Martin E. Knott; two daughters, Doris Ann Oelze and Carol Maglinger, both of Owensboro; four grandchildren, Denise Oelze, Diann Young, Jennifer Maglinger and Benton Maglinger; and a great-grandchild, Bradley Young.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.
