Latonia's George Ellis, loved nature
Wandering in the woods, brushing up on history and spending time with family were among George E. Ellis' favorite past-times.
"He loved the woods, he was a great woodsman. And he loved Kentucky history," said his son, Ron Ellis of Lakeside Park.
Mr. Ellis, of Latonia, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was 69.
His love for the outdoors began when he was a boy growing up in rural Lewis County, east of Maysville. He spent as much time as he could in the woods, often hunting squirrels and rabbits, Ron Ellis said.
He went to Tollesboro High School in Lewis County, and following in the footsteps of his father, went on to become a railroader. He retired as a control tower operator for CSX Railroad in 1987 after 42 years.
Mr. Ellis married his wife of 51 years, Mary C. Ellis, and had four children.
"His family was his passion," Ron Ellis said. "He loved his family, and he worked hard for them."
Mr. Ellis was a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and enjoyed college and professional football, his son said. His favorite teams: the Texas Longhorns and Penn State Nittany Lions.
In his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed taking road trips, visiting historical sites. Devoted to his friends and family, he frequently visited his aging mother, who has been in a coma for nearly nine years.
"If he was your friend, you could thank your stars, because he was a friend all the way," his son said.
In addition to his wife and son, survivors include daughters, Beverly Fowee of Florence, Anita Scharfenberger of California, Ky., and Lisa D. Ellis of Melbourne; his mother and step-father, Helen and Kenneth Carr of Aberdeen, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
