James W. Wood Sr.

James W. Wood Sr., 92, formerly of Owensboro, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark, Ohio. He was born in Daviess County on Feb. 16, 1912, to the late John A. and Nanny Ruby Wood.

Mr. Wood retired from General Electric on Dec. 1, 1975, after 25 years of service. He graduated from Owensboro High School in 1930, was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of AARP and a charter member of Windridge Country Club. He was a member of Third Baptist Church, the Berean Bible Class and sang in the sanctuary choir for many years. He was preceded in death by two sisters; and his wife, Elizabeth Newton Wood in November 1989.

Survivors include two sons, James W. Wood Jr. of Newark and Gary N. Wood of Snellville, Ga.; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Friday, May 28, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Third Baptist Church, P.O. Box 808, Owensboro, KY 42303-0808.

Wilda Rogers

HARTFORD - Wilda Rogers, 71, of Hartford died Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Ohio County Hospital. She was born in Ohio County, worked 30 years at Montpelier Glove Factory in Hartford, also worked as an aide at Ohio County Hospital, Owensboro Mercy Health System and Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Owensboro. She was a member of East Hartford Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles W. and Louise Neal Sheffield; and a sister, Susan Rogers McClutchon.

Survivors include a son, Charles Mark and Crystal Rogers of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two daughters, Rosilenda and Robert Farmer of Whitesville and Betty Jo Chapman of Hartford; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Sue Sheffield and Robert McClearn of Drakesboro.

There will be a memorial service at a later date at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Ohio County for the family. Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Hartford is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Howard Abney

CALHOUN - Gladys Howard Abney, 85, of Calhoun died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Gladys Haynes Howard was born May 17, 1919, in McLean County to the late Charlie and Ruth Howard and was married to William Roscoe Abney. Gladys was a homemaker and a member of the Calhoun Holiness Church. Her husband of 58 years, Roscoe Abney, died Aug. 31, 1994.

Survivors include six sons and their wives, Charles W. Abney of Miamitown, Ohio, Jerry and Earlene Abney of Calhoun, Darrell and Kaye Abney of Maysville, Terry and Shelia Abney of Owensboro, Russell and Charlene Abney of Winter Haven, Fla., and Norman and Candy Abney of Wake Forrest, N.C.; three daughters and their husbands, Betty and Louard Gray of Princeton, Deborah and Alan Blus of Calhoun and Judy and Johnny McCart of Conyers, Ga.; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Luther Howard of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with the Rev. Harry Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Friends may visit with the Abney family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at Musters in Calhoun.

Anna W. 'Coty' Medlin

Anna W. "Coty" Medlin, 75, of 925 Sweeney St., died at 4:30 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born on Oct. 1, 1928, in Ohio County to Harlin B. Wigginton and Ethel Loyd Wigginton. She retired from General Electric and Hon on June 6, 1991. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and her hobbies included Granny Coty's Christmas Village for Children and stamp collecting. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Wigginton and Edwin "Dick" Wigginton; and two sisters, Norma Evans and Claris Smith.

Survivors include her companion of 33 years, Daniel D. Moore Sr.; a daughter, Sheila Vanover of Owensboro; a grandson and his wife, Christopher and Cindy Vanover of Owensboro; three great-grandchildren, Heather Vanover, Candice Vanover and Amber Vanover, all of Owensboro; a brother, Dan Wigginton of Long Island, N.Y.; and a sister, Hettie Thompson of Pleasant Ridge.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Baptist cemetery. The Rev. Tim Roberts will officiate.

Peggy Sue Hester

REYNOLDS STATION - Peggy Sue Hester, 56, of Reynolds Station died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Fordsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Johnson; two daughters, Karen Fuqua and Patty Wright; and her mother, Joan Turner.

Graveside services: 1 p.m. today at Boling Chapel cemetery. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sudie Carrie Sapp
05/23/04

Sudie Carrie Sapp, 94, of Owensboro died Friday, May 21, 2004, at her home. The Daviess County native was a homemaker, wonderful mother and a member of Third Baptist Church. Mrs. Sapp was a Kentucky Colonel, member of Third Baptist Senior Citizens Group and enjoyed walking, cooking for her family and yardwork. She was also a special friend for anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.O. Sapp, in 1956; and a son, Jerry Owsley Sapp, in 1979.

She is survived by six daughters, Shirley Cook, Mildred Reynolds, Marion "Jackie" Rickard and Sandra and her husband David Richardson, all of Owensboro, Jill and her husband Jim Kelly of Fairland, Okla., and Donna Ballard of Hartford; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all those who survive her.

Funeral services are at noon Monday, May 24, 2004, at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice or the Masonville Baptist Church Music Fund.

Ruby Maedell Hurt Strayn

DUNMOR - Ruby Maedell Hurt Strayn, 81, of Dunmor died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. She had worked as a housekeeper at schools and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Clifty.

Survivors include her husband, Lenard Strayn; three sons, Robert Strayn, Wayne Strayn and Daniel Strayn; two daughters, Brenda Lange and Jonell Strayn; and a sister, Evelyn Biembick.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial: Cessna cemetery in Powderly. Visitation: From 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jack D. Allison
05/26/04

Jack D. Allison, 88, of 313 E. 21st St., Owensboro, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Bon Harbor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Owensboro. He was born on Dec. 31, 1915, in Daviess County to the late Elmo W. and Alma Pearl (Evans) Allison. He retired from Western Kentucky Gas Co. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Louisville Post. He was a board member of the Kentucky Golf Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances F. Allison, on Jan. 15, 1991; and by a brother, James E. Allison, in 1983.

Survivors include a son, James S. Allison of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Tom Allison of Germantown, Md., Peter Allison of Bel Air, Md., and Sarah Housman of Paducah; and five great-grandchildren, Abbie, Sofie, Ben, Allie and Max.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, 800 South Limestone, Lexington, KY 40536-0230 or Gideons International, P.O. Box 1133, Owensboro, KY 42302-1133.

Mary St. Clair

Mary St. Clair, 69, of 5276 Ashland Ave., Owensboro died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at her home in Owensboro. Mary Margaret Parks was born July 25, 1934, in Owensboro to the late Robert and Lily Parks. She was a diamond sales representative for Rogers Jewelers in Owensboro and was a member of the No Creek United Methodist Church in Ohio County. Mary especially enjoyed fishing and traveling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Perry, who died in 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar St. Clair; five children, Sue Haimes of Owensboro, Mike Abney of Rumsey, Jeff Abney of Campbellsville, Barry Abney of Owensboro and Tim Abney of Calhoun; four stepchildren, Teresa Parker of Island, Patricia Bowlds and Deresa Douglas of Livermore and Eddie St. Clair of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Townsend of Tulsa, Okla., and Bonnie Rawls of Hereford, Ariz.; and four brothers, Bobby Parks of Owensboro, Bill Parks of Beebe, Ark., David Parks of Owensboro and Ken Parks of Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel with the Rev. Tony St. Clair officiating. Burial will be in the Green River Memorial Gardens in Livermore. Friends may visit with the St. Clair family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at Musters in Livermore.

Linda Faye Thomas Clark

Linda Faye Thomas Clark, 55, of Owensboro died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at her home. She had worked at Owensboro Medical Health System for 27 years.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Danny E. Clark; two daughters, Tammy Elaine Clark and Jami Michelle Clark; her mother, Alice C. Thomas; a brother, Cliff Thomas; and two sisters, Dianna Jones and Judy Thomas.

Services: 6 p.m. Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation: From 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Linda Clark Memorial Fund, c/o Alice Thomas, Apt. 3309, 2701 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301.
