Barbara Sue Kopowski, active Democrat, wife of Campbell judge
Campbell Circuit Court Judge Leonard Kopowski has lost his best friend.
Barbara Sue Kopowski, 48, of Melbourne, died Saturday night in St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
Kopowski said he had been out briefly Saturday afternoon, and when he returned home he found his wife lying on the couch. She told him she couldn't move, that something had happened to her.
The judge called 911 and his wife was rushed to St. Luke Hospital East, but her condition continued to worsen.
Cause of death, Kopowski indicated, was a stroke. "The last two weeks she had been having bad headaches, but the doctor diagnosed it as a muscle condition. She had been feeling better the last few days," he said.
The Campbell County Coroner's office is investigating, Deputy Coroner Al Garnick said.
Mrs. Kopowski and Judge Kopowski would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary later this month. They each had two children from previous marriages, but treated them as all one family, Kopowski said.
"We had been having a lot of fun together, with the children and grandchildren," he said.
Mrs. Kopowski was a clerk at Pro Active Health Services, Cincinnati.
She was active in the Newport Elks Lodge Auxiliary, taking part in many events there, including the weekly fish fries and period style shows. She also was an active member of the Campbell County Woman's Democratic Club, helping to arrange and chair events.
"She was a giving and caring person, always ready to help anyone who needed help," said Mrs. Kopowski's friend, Cheryl Paul.
"We've been on vacations together and on the campaign trail together. She just never met a stranger," said Mrs. Paul, the wife of Campbell County Judge-executive Ken Paul.
Judge Kopowski and his wife traveled extensively together, including fishing trips on Lake Erie and in Canada, he said. "We were fishing buddies. Some people were surprised that we would fly into remote places in Canada and spend several days together fishing," he said.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kopowski is survived by sons, Heath Chandler of Kingsport, Tenn., and Brian Chandler of Alexandria; daughters, Dana Bird of Wilder, and Andrea Keating of Covington; her parents, William and Edna Frost of Highland Heights; sisters, Ola Peden of Killen, Ala., Beulah Reinhardt and Darlene Kramer, both of Alexandria, Brenda Singleton of Wilder, and Beverly Mester of Newport; a brother, Bill Frost of Melbourne; and four granddaughters.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Boys/Girls Club of Newport, 36 E. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
