Devoted mom Lucille Shafer, loved farm
What Lucille Jacobs Shafer loved most about living on a farm in Grant County was being able to work outdoors, tending her garden, crops and dairy cows.
"She just liked being outside," said a daughter, Carolyn Faye King of Williamstown. "She was kind of an outdoors person. She had a huge garden, and always enjoyed canning and freezing. When she moved, she really missed it."
Ms. Shafer, of Grant Manor Nursing Home, died Friday at the nursing home. She was 79.
Her early years were spent with her parents, a brother and five sisters in rural Boone and Kenton counties. To help her family economically, when Ms. Shafer was about 15, she moved in with a couple in Pendleton County, doing housework in exchange for room and board.
Through the couple, Ms. Shafer met Joseph Lewis Shafer Sr., her husband of 47 years. They married in 1935 and moved to a home on Ky. 22 in Pendleton County.
There, they had four children. Then in the early 1940s, they moved to a small farm in Grant County, where they had another child. The family primarily grew tobacco.
In between cooking, cleaning, gardening and parenting, Ms. Shafer also enjoyed participating in a women's missionary organization through her church.
"She was a very good mother, very attentive," Ms. King said.
In the late 1950s, Ms. Shafer took a job with Engles Jewelry in Williamstown, where she worked off and on until shortly before her husband died in 1982.
She moved into a retirement home in Williamstown after her husband's death.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Lewis Shafer Jr. of Dry Ridge; daughters, Trudy Owens of Oxnard, Calif., Barbara Webster of Covington, and Shirley Wash of Williamstown; a stepdaughter, Beulah Wallace of Williamstown; sisters, Edna Mae Moore of Ft. Thomas and Frances Shrout of Bethel, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Memorials are suggested to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Building Fund; or Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.
