Benjamin Hubert 'Pete' Warren II

Benjamin Hubert "Pete" Warren II, 68, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at his home in Parrish, Fla. He was born Sept. 16, 1936, in Lexington. Mr. Warren graduated from St. Mary of the Lake Wawasee Seminary in 1954 and continued his divinity studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium. He returned to the United States to earn his B.A. from Louisiana State University. He served in the Army from 1960 to 1962 and subsequently entered the Army Reserve. He was commissioned as an officer and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 36 years. Mr. Warren was also a federal civil servant in Columbus, Ohio, for 28 years after which he transferred to Little Rock, Ark., where he retired. He moved to Parrish in December 2004. Mr. Warren was an avid bridge player and fluent in six languages. He was also an active member of the Jaycees in Owensboro and Columbus. He was a scoutmaster for two years and remained an active member of the ROA throughout his military career until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Benjamin H. I and Mollie M. Warren.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley Warren; two sons, Benjamin H. Warren III and his wife Jill of California and Dr. Randall Warren and his wife Dr. Mary Ann of New Jersey; two daughters, Susan Grayson and her husband Jason of Florida and Julie Warren of Florida; eight grandchildren; his stepmother, Lois Warren of Owensboro; three sisters, Lynn Elliott and her husband, Ernie, of Owensboro, Polly McCubbins and her husband, Larry, of Owensboro and Dr. Holly Vickers and her husband, Dr. Mark, of Henderson; two brothers, Steve Warren and his wife, Melissa, of Tennessee, Chris Warren and his wife, Vickie, of Owensboro; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. Burial was in Florida National cemetery in Ocala, Fla., with fully military honors on Wednesday, June 15, 2005.

Ann Evans

Ann Evans, 77, of Utica died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, George Evans; two sons, George Evans and Richard Evans; and four daughters, Margie Crocette, Judy Weaver, Beverly and Lynn Evans.

Visitation: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel.

Gladys F. Harrison

Gladys F. Harrison, 83, of 3443 Royal Drive, Owensboro, died Monday, July 18, 2005, at her home. She was born in Scottsville on May 9, 1922, to the late Oscar and Daisy (Loyd) Frost. She was retired from General Electric Co. and was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James M. "Pounder" Harrison; and several cousins.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, P.O. Box 36570, Louisville, KY 40223-9909.

Gerald Eugene Oberst

Gerald Eugene Oberst, 78, of 1936 Ottawa Drive, Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. He was born in Daviess County to the late Herman S. and Anna Elizabeth Winkler Oberst and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church and had held the position of grand knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. After retiring from the postal service, he had also worked as a funeral assistant with Glenn Funeral Home.

Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Frey Oberst; three sons and their wives, Gerald E. "Gerry" and Eve Oberst Jr. of Brussels, Belgium, Christopher M. and Della Oberst of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Dan E. and Lisa Oberst of Bowling Green; five daughters and their husbands, Laura E. and Dennis Tucker of Murray, Julia A. and Mark Ziebarth of Summerland, British Columbia, Mary Claire Oberst and Dave Irvine of Akron, Ohio, Alison and Tom Davis of Nashville and Jennifer E. Curtis of Westerville, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; a brother, Cletus E. Oberst of Dayton, Ohio; and three sisters, Elizabeth T. O'Bryan, Rose V. Clark and Anna M. Davis, all of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Immaculate Catholic Church, with burial following in Mater Dolorosa cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount St. Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.

Yewell C. Basham

Yewell C. Basham, 74, of 1968 Stinnett Road, Maceo, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. He was born Aug. 12, 1930, to the late Wavie and Verna Morris Basham in Hancock County. He was a deacon and devoted member of Lewisport Baptist Church, a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He retired from Green River Steel and really enjoyed hunting, going to ballgames and being with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Emma Basham, on June 4, 1993.

Survivors include one son, Barry Basham, and his wife, Denise, of Maceo; two daughters, Sheila Houchins and her husband, Jeff, of Chalybeate Springs, Donna Westerfield and her husband, Keith, of Lewisport; six grandchildren, Kori Rae Westerfield, Ami Nicole Westerfield, Cortney Jean Basham, Seth Parker Basham, Kelly Ann Houchins and Hunter Jeffrey Houchins; one sister, Bonnie Hite of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday and after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Robert DeJarnette

CLOVERPORT - Robert DeJarnette, 74, of Cloverport died Friday, April 29, 2005, at University Hospital. He had worked at American Electric Power as an engineer.

Survivors include two sons, James Hughes DeJarnette and Robert Russell DeJarnette; three daughters, Cherri Mignon Church, Roberta Jo May and Theresa Lynn Wilkerson; and a sister, Evelyn Reid.

Private burial service: Memorial Gardens. Visitation: From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Wallace-Burns Funeral Home in Cloverport.

Margie Ann Varble Watkins

Margie Ann Varble Watkins, 62, of Owensboro died at 9:28 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Methodist Hospital in Henderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isadore and Mary Varble; a brother, Edwin Earl "Butch" Varble; and two sisters, Dorothy Denton and Dora Lee Bates.

Survivors include her husband of 24 years, William "Bill" Watkins of Owensboro; a daughter, Michele Latta of Mayfield; two sons, Chris Watkins of Mayfield and Kevin Ballis of Tell City, Ind.; four sisters, Emma Marie Beals of Robards, Joyce Gass of Henderson and Kathy Bugg and Donna Smithhart, both of Reed; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home in Henderson. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary Simpson Washburn

Mary Simpson Washburn of West Seventh Street, Owensboro, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Orlando, Fla. She was formerly employed as a sales clerk.

Survivors include a sister, Louise Hyland.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Private burial: Elmwood cemetery. Visitation: After noon Sunday at the funeral home.

John Patrick Whitaker Sr.

RAMSEY, Ind. - John Patrick Whitaker Sr., 71, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Ind. He was born March 14, 1934, in Owensboro. He retired after 22 years of service in the United States Navy and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a terminal manager for Lafarge Corp. Louisville cement terminal before retiring in 1996.

He was a loving husband and father that will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy L. Greenwell Whitaker; four sons, John P. Whitaker Jr. of Ramsey, Joseph M. Whitaker of Austin, Texas, Stephen D. Whitaker of Portland, Ore., and Mark E. Whitaker of Ramsey; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. EDT Monday, May 9, 2005, at Swarens Funeral Home, 1405 Highway 64 NW, Ramsey, Ind. Burial with full military honors will be at Central Barren cemetery, New Salisbury, Ind. Visitation at the funeral home is from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 11 a.m. Monday.

Phillip Dean Veitch

CENTRAL CITY - Phillip Dean Veitch, 71, of Central City died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Christ Hospital in Oaklawn, Ill. He was retired from Central Steel & Wire.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jones Veitch; a brother, Archie Louis Veitch; and a sister, Billie Taylor.

Services: 3 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation: After 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William D. Scheffer
04/29/2005

William D. Scheffer, 80, formerly of Owensboro, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Beaver Dam Health Care Manor. He was a member of Faith Baptist Temple in Beaver Dam and retired as a salesman for Carpets Unlimited.

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Hazelwood.

There are no services or visitation. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
