Lucille Yates

Mrs. Lucille Yates, 75, of 1244 Yelvington-Knottsville Road, Maceo, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Jan. 1, 1929, to the late Reat and Martha Pryor Farmer in Daviess County. She retired after working several years at Hillcrest Nursing Home, attended Yelvington Baptist Church and was formerly a member of Peoples Baptist Church for more than 20 years. She was dedicated to her family, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Yates, who died March 25, 1993; two brothers, Harry and Clifton Farmer; and a sister, Margaret Conkright.
Survivors include a son, Ray and his wife, Lyn Yates, of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Cindy Greenwell and her husband, Dale, of Maceo; two grandchildren, Bradley Crump and Brittanie Hite; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Ashley Hite; three brothers, Harland Farmer of Owensboro, Paul Farmer of Maceo and James Farmer of Evansville; a sister, Mary Young of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mary Ardell Sims

OCALA, Fla. -- Mary Ardell Sims, age 79, of Ocala, formerly of Todd County, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 2004, at her home in Ocala. Ms. Sims is a retired registered nurse. Ms. Sims is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Wilhite; and one sister, Ms. Donna Jo Francis.
Ms. Sims is survived by three children, Cindy Davis of Pensacola, Fla., Roger Sims of Hartford and Gary Sims of Las Vegas; Ms. Sims is also survived by two brothers, Brother Tommy Wilhite and Nelvis Wilhite; as well as four sisters, Sally English, Maudine Jett, Bonnie Reid and Patty Hightower. Ms. Sims is also survived by six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The Sims family will be receiving friends at the Todd County Funeral Home (270-265-5616) on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Brother Tommy Wilhite officiating and interment to follow at the Gants cemetery.
Lawrence Porter Sheriff

Lawrence Porter Sheriff, 87, formerly of Utica died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Barren County Health Care Center in Glasgow. He was a member of Utica Baptist Church, where he served as a active member for many years. He was a farmer and took an active role in farm organizations throughout the state. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Porter Sheriff and Elsye Graddy Sheriff.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Dawson Sheriff of Glasgow; one sister, Mildred Sheriff Jenkins of Glasgow; one niece, Donna Jenkins Pace and husband Jim of Nashville; and one nephew Larry Jenkins and wife Vickie of Glasgow.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro with burial to follow in Utica cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home.
Jeanette Logsdon Schartung

Jeanette Logsdon Schartung, 54, of Owensboro died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born July 28, 1950, in Daviess County, she was actively involved with her church, Precious Blood Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharist minister and lector and member of Koinonia. She was the former owner of Jeanette's Tanning and Toning and was a surgical tech. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed bingo, church, helping others and most of all, caring for her grandchildren. She was an amazing woman who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Schartung, on June 21, 1996; and her mother, Betty Logsdon, on Dec. 21, 2003.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John A. Schartung Jr.; two daughters, Jennifer Gibbs and Jessie Schartung of Owensboro; three sons, John Schartung III, Jason Schartung and Jeff Schartung, all of Owensboro; eight grandchildren, Morgan and Jared Gibbs, Caley, Jordon and Alyssa Schartung and Nickolas, Javonte and Paris Schartung, all of Owensboro; her father, Martin Logsdon of Owensboro; three sisters, Martha Wilson of Owensboro, Barbara Caton and Becky Puffenbarger, both of Virginia; six brothers, Norman Logsdon, Larry Logsdon, Tony Logsdon, Marty Logsdon and David Logsdon, all of Owensboro, and Darrell Logsdon of Bowling Green; and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at St. Martin Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Walter Ray 'Rusty' Pointer

CENTRAL CITY -- Walter Ray "Rusty" Pointer, 74, of Central City died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at his home. He was a retired coal miner.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Sallee Pointer; a son, Ray Pointer; four daughters, Rita Pointer, Ann Pointer, Tracy Fraze and Heather Roberts; a brother, Bobby Pointer; and two sisters, Patsy Groves and Sharon Williams.
Services: 11 a.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Fairmount cemetery in Central City.
Martine Blandford Orvin

Martine Blandford Orvin, 93, of Owensboro died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Hermitage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born March 2, 1911, Mrs. Orvin was a homemaker and member of the Lewis Lane Baptist Church. Mrs. Orvin enjoyed gardening, cooking and her church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Hugh Orvin Jr.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha Orvin Pigg of Curdsville; three grandchildren, Carol Carter, Walter Shearer IV and Martha Page; and five great-grandchildren, Ashley Payne, Walt Shearer V, Sarah Marie Shearer, Quincy Page and Halsey Page.
Funeral services are at noon Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until noon.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Baptist Children's Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
Dorothy J. Melton

EVANSVILLE -- Dorothy J. Melton, 85, of Evansville died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born in Owensboro and is the daughter of Elma and Jane Gilbert. Dorothy graduated from Western Kentucky State in Bowling Green, where she majored in English, minored in French and music and was an accomplished violinist. She began her teaching career in Sebree, where she taught English at Sebree High School. She was also the choir director at the Methodist Church in Sebree.
She met and married
Clarence "Ross" Melton in 1942 and continued her teaching career until her daughter Janet was born. In 1949 the family relocated to Evansville, where she became a member of the Methodist Temple participating in the Crusader Class and the Women's Fellowship. Dorothy volunteered for eight years as a leader for the Brownie and Girl Scouts at Stanley Hall. During this time she also volunteered at the Methodist Temple for vacation Bible school.
Dorothy later began working for the educational TV station in Evansville. She then resumed her teaching career in 1962 at Central High School, where she taught French and English as well as accompanied students to France in the spring. While teaching at Central High School she completed her master's degree at the University of Evansville. Dorothy retired in 1977. She loved playing bridge, sewing, and knitting. She was a member of the Finesser's Bridge Group and Retired Teachers Association. In retirement she enjoyed traveling and visiting all her family. In 1998, Dorothy moved to the Protestant Home where she made new and renewed old friendships. Dorothy was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and she touched many people's lives.
She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 40 years, Clarence Ross Melton, in 1982; and a grandson, Mathew Ross Welborn in 1997.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Janet Welborn of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Singer Island, Fla.; a brother, Robert E. Gilbert Sr. of Owensboro; grandsons Jay Welborn of Bolingbrook, Ill.; Aaron and wife, Jane, Welborn of Apple Valley, Minn.; great grandchildren Jillian and Jaden Welborn of Apple Valley; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Methodist Temple, officiated by the Rev. Robert Coleman. Burial will be at Springdale cemetery in Sebree. Friends may call Friday, Nov. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Methodist Temple.

Martine McDonald

CENTRAL CITY -- Martine McDonald, 78, of 405 North Sixth St., Central City died at 4:05 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. She was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Muhlenberg County and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three sons, Ronnie McDonald of Central City, Ray McDonald of Bremen and Troy McDonald of Central City; three daughters, Carolyn Lile of Central City, Beverly Hardeman of Paducah and Freda Vancil of Paducah; two brothers, Eddie Vincent of Bremen and Bobby Joe Vincent of Central City; two sisters, Juanita Rhoades of Hartford and Diane King of Evansville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Bob Lowery officiating and assisted by the Rev. Greg Brooks. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery in Bremen. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City.
Ruth Richardson Lake Henderson

Ruth Richardson Lake Henderson, 91, of 1912 Wyandotte Ave., Owensboro died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at her home. She was born in Ohio County on Sept. 5, 1913, to the late Mirt D. and Dora Ann (Stewart) Richardson. She retired as a cook for Utica Elementary School. She attended Seven Hills Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Olden Lake, on Nov. 25, 1978; and her second husband, Marion Andrew Henderson, on Dec. 29, 1996.
She is survived by two sisters, Christine Henderson and her husband, Paul, of Owensboro and Deuma Ann Hixenbaugh of Owensboro; a brother, Lyman Richardson of Owensboro; a foster daughter, Carolyn Sue Harrison of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Tonia Cline and Anita Simpson; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews Bob and Sue Dillow of Lake Wales, Fla., Debbie Payne of Owensboro, Pam Lane of Ocala, Fla., Mike Wilson of Miami and Tammy Lott of Eva, Ala.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today at James H. Ruth Richardson Lake Henderson, 91, of 1912 Wyandotte Ave., Owensboro died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at her home. She retired as a cook from Utica Elementary School.
