Iona F. 'Oney' Connor

Iona F. "Oney" Connor, 79, of 1708 Shawnee Drive, Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. She was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Illinois to the late John A. and Leona (Nissen) Lange. She was the owner of Oney's Shoes. She attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. Connor, on Nov. 9, 2004.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Bass King and husband, Robert, of Springfield, Mo., and Hazel Juanita Davis and husband, Norman, of Honokaa, Hawaii; two sons, Daniel E. Connor of Branson, Mo., and Rodger Connor and wife, Ruth, of Owensboro; six grandchildren, Clinton A. Connor, Robin Woodard, Dana Murphy, Tina Connor, Shaheen Plunier and Hamid Davis; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Herbert Lange of Princeton, Ill., Donald Lange of Walnut, Ill., and Harold Lange of Malden, Ill.

Memorial services are at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8., at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Sorgho. Visitation is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. James H. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice & Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Peggy Jean Burdette Dowell

HARDINSBURG -- Peggy Jean Burdette Dowell, 75, of Hardinsburg died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Medco Center. She was a member of Faith Community Church and retired as a supervisor from Galante Studio in Hardinsburg.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Dowell; her mother, Allene Wheatley; two sons, James B. Dowell and Brian Dowell; two daughters, Cheryl Sipes and Mabel Allen; and two brothers, Maurice Burdette and James Burdette.

Services: 1 p.m. Sunday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial: Ivy Hill cemetery in Hardinsburg. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Alzheimer's Association.

Marguerite Barnard Forsythe

BEAVER DAM -- Marguerite Barnard Forsythe died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004. She was born Dec. 18, 1927, to Edgar and Eva Barnard. She graduated from Bethel, Bowling Green Business University and received her masters degree from George Peabody College. She taught in the Ohio County schools until her retirement. She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a charter member of the 1906 Society of Western Kentucky University and a supporter of the Western Scholarship Program.

She is survived by her husband, Shelby Forsythe; and a brother, Charles Barnard and wife, Lou.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at William L. Danks Funeral Home, with visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday. The family will not convene at the home during this time of grief, so no food is necessary. We further request that expressions of concern take the form of donations to your church or charity.

Betty Offutt Haire

Betty Offutt Haire, 77, of Owensboro died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was a member of Christian Assembly and retired from National Mine Service Co. in 1990.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville. Burial: Grapevine cemetery in Madisonville. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Christian Assembly Church.

William Anthony 'Tony' Haynes

EDMONTON, Alberta -- William Anthony "Tony" Haynes, 68, of Edmonton died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004. He was born in Knottsville to Dock and Henrietta Haynes. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, J.C. Haynes. He was a veteran of the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; a daughter, Connie Powell of Calgary, Canada; three sons, Kevin and Gary of Canada and Ken of Raleigh, N.C.; four sisters, Dorothy Clary McCoy, Teresa Dolina Roby and Rose Ann Payne, all of Owensboro, and Loretta Bailey of Philpot; four brothers, Gerald and Darrell Haynes, both of Owensboro, and Ray and Bobby Haynes, both of Whitesville.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Dorothy J. Melton

EVANSVILLE -- Dorothy J. Melton, 85, of Evansville died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born in Owensboro and is the daughter of Elma and Jane Gilbert. Dorothy graduated from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, where she majored in English, minored in French and music and was an accomplished violinist. She began her teaching career in Sebree, where she taught English at Sebree High School. She was also the choir director at the Methodist Church in Sebree. She met and married Clarence "Ross" Melton in 1942, and continued her teaching career until her daughter, Janet, was born. In 1949, the family relocated to Evansville where she became a member of the Methodist Temple, participating in the Crusader Class and the Women's Fellowship. Dorothy volunteered for eight years as a leader for the Brownie and Girl Scouts at Stanley Hall. During this time she also volunteered at the Methodist Temple for vacation Bible school. Dorothy later began working for the educational TV station in Evansville. She then resumed her teaching career in 1962 at Central High School, where she taught French and English as well as accompanied students to France in the spring. While teaching at Central High School she completed her masters degree at the University of Evansville. Dorothy retired in 1977. She loved playing bridge, sewing and knitting. She was a member of the Finesser's Bridge Group and Retired Teachers Association. In retirement she enjoyed traveling and visiting all her family. In 1998, Dorothy moved to the Protestant Home where she made new and renewed old friendships. Dorothy was a wonderful mother and grandmother and she touched many people's lives. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 40 years, Clarence Ross Melton, in 1982; and a grandson, Mathew Ross Welborn, in 1997.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Janet Welborn of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Singer Island, Fla.; a brother, Robert E. Gilbert Sr. of Owensboro; grandsons, Jay Welborn of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Aaron and wife, Jane Welborn, of Apple Valley, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Jillian and Jaden Welborn of Apple Valley; an aunt, Leslie Christy of Shreveport, La.; an uncle, Hugh Gilbert of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Nov. 27, at Methodist Temple, officiated by the Rev. Robert Coleman. Burial services will be at Springdale cemetery in Sebree, officiated by the Rev. Martha McKown. Memorial contributions may be made to Methodist Temple.

Ronald Wayne Millard

CENTRAL CITY -- Ronald Wayne Millard, 53, of 2109 Jackson St., Paducah, formerly of Central City, died at 2:20 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. He was born Sept. 11, 1951, in Muhlenberg County and was a boilermaker and member of Mount Zion Church in Paducah. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Knight, in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Clark Millard of Paducah; four daughters, Brook LeAnn Lambert of Central City, Heather Harris of Madisonville and Tracy Knight and Stacey Gibson, both of Beaver Dam; six grandchildren; his parents, James E. and Joyce Devine of Central City; and a brother, James M. "Butch" Devine of Central City.

Services are at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 27, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. C.W. Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City.

Francis D. 'Red' Morris

Francis D. "Red" Morris, 59, of Knottsville died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Vincennes, Ind. He was born in Whitesville on Jan. 8, 1945. He was the son of the late Odus and Dessie Morris and was preceded in death by four siblings, Charles, Ruth, Gene and Doc. He worked 31 years for W.R. Grace, was a Kentucky Colonel, volunteered at Knottsville Fire Department and was part business owner in T.T. Forklift and Krazy Kars. He was a member of St. William Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Dottie Morris; five children and their spouses, Dennie Morris of Owensboro, Tim and Bryann Morris of Owensboro, Brian and Sandra Morris of Knottsville, Angie and Tommy Bittel of Knottsville and Theresa and Steve Bickett of Whitesville; five grandchildren, Josh, Ashley, Brandon and Haley Morris and Tommy Bittel; three stepgrandchildren, Kaely Holloway and Chris and Nick O'Bryan; eight siblings, Edward Morris of Whitesville, John Morris of Scottsburg, Ind., James "Rusty" Morris of Gloucester, Va., Joe Morris of Clarksville, Ind., Harold Morris of Whitesville, Mae Ella Wathen of Tampa, Fla., Madeline Payne of Whitesville and Trelva Anderson of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at St. William Catholic Church in Knottsville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. The rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. There is no visitation Sunday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mary Carrico Memorial School.

James Noble Norris

James Noble Norris, 84, of 140 Kentucky 279 South, Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Owensboro. He was born June 20, 1920, in Warren County to the late James A. and Eva (Haycraft) Norris and was preceded in death by two sisters, Bobbie Edwards and Elsie Hamilton. He retired as a crane operator for Dravo Corp., was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of F&AM No. 878 Stanley, a 32nd degree Mason, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Sorgho Baptist Church. Noble's passion in life was honoring and caring for Sorgho Baptist Church cemetery, where he was also chairman of the board of trustees for many years. His wife of 52 years, Lena Hatcher Norris, preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2002.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Terry L. and Ginger Norris of Owensboro and Larry and Karen Norris of Marion, Ind.; three grandchildren, Bradley, Kristyn and Nathan Norris; two stepgrandsons, Lee Gilbert of Breckinridge, Colo., and Tim Gilbert of Oxford, Ohio; a brother, William S. Norris of Bridgeport, Ohio; an uncle, Ralph Haycraft of Burkesville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenny and Martha Pendleton; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Sorgho Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Sorgho Baptist Church cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by VFW Post No. 696. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at James H. Davis Funeral Home, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. today. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Sorgho Baptist Church cemetery, 3083 Highway 1554, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Nathan Lee Renfrow

HORSE BRANCH -- Nathan Lee Renfrow, 23, of 9637 U.S. 62 East, Horse Branch, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Horse Branch. He was born July 30, 1981, in Daviess County to Walton Lee Renfrow Jr. and Debby Maiden Renfrow. He attended Horse Branch General Baptist Church and enjoyed riding motorcycles and four-wheelers.

Survivors include a son, Jaxon Tyler Edwards Renfrow of Horse Branch; his parents, Walton Lee Renfrow Jr. and Debby Maiden Renfrow, both of Horse Branch; his grandmother, Dortha Allen Renfrow of Horse Branch; and two sisters, Jaime "Mimi" Renfrow of Madisonville and Ashley "Sissy" Renfrow of Rochester.

Services are at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Horse Branch General Baptist Church. Visitation is after 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Wilson cemetery in Horse Branch. Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy to take the form of donations to Jaxon Tyler Edwards Renfrow Trust Fund, c/o Bank of Ohio County, P.O. Box 307, Beaver Dam, KY 42320.

Ruth DeWeese
11/26/2004

CENTRAL CITY -- Ruth DeWeese, 100, of 210 Brook Haven Lane, Galatin, Tenn., died at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Brandywood Nursing Home in Galatin. She was born Sept. 24, 2004, in Muhlenberg County. She was a homemaker and member of Dunmor Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Bill DeWeese of LaPine, Ore., and Bob DeWeese of LeGrange, Ill.; two daughters, Edna Hocker of Justice, Ill., and Pat Brown of Galatin; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. R.D. Mize officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is after 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
