Helen Louise Harper Tichenor

HARTFORD - Helen Louise Harper Tichenor, 81, of 3454 U.S. Highway 231 North, Hartford, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Wellington Parc in Owensboro. She was born April 27, 1923, in Owensboro to Carl Harper and Ola Mae Sims Harper. She was a retired businesswoman and farmer and former owner of Tichenor Hardware & Furniture Store. She was a member of Beulah Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin W. Tichenor, in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Lana Tichenor Taylor and her husband George F., both of Winter Garden, Fla.; one grandson, Martin C. Tichenor Jr.; three granddaughters, Laura Taylor Brock, Rachel Taylor and Jennifer Taylor King; three brothers, Charles Harper of Owensboro, Harold Harper of Marseilles, Ill., and Larry Harper of Palos Park, Ill.; two sisters, Virginia McCarty and Wanda Henry, both of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

A private visitation and graveside service will be held today with the Rev. Bill Tichenor officiating. Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Cancer Society, c/o Betty Lindsey, 360 Brey Lane, Hartford, KY 42347.

Daryl F. Bates

Daryl F. Bates, 78, of 1506 Kent Place, Owensboro died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. He was born in June 18, 1926, in McLean County to the late Walker A. and Myra (Robertson) Bates. He was an accountant, employed as a controller at American Olean Tile Co. He was a member of Third Baptist Church where he volunteered, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and the activities at the YMCA. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles "Jack" Bates and a sister, Nell B. Anthony.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Bates; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonny and Kenneth Smith of Cloverport; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. and Nancy Bates of Bowling Green; five grandchildren, Shelby Smith, Dakota Smith, Jerrald Smith, Christopher Bates and Hannah Bates; a sister, Ann B. Vaughan of Madisonville; and two brothers, James Bates and Joseph A. Bates, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and after 10 a.m. on Monday at James H. Davis Funeral Home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Third Baptist Church, P.O. Box 808, Owensboro, KY 42302-0808.

Adeline Phelps 'Ann' Bullock

BEAVER DAM - Adeline Phelps "Ann" Bullock, 64, of Beaver Dam died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Ohio County and retired from the Ohio County Board of Education as a bus driver. She was a member of New Assembly Church at Hartford and was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Bullock on May 20, 1981; and her parents, Lonnie Sr. and Bernice Ward Phelps; a daughter Carolyn Ann Bullock; and a sister, Louise Decker.

Survivors include a son James Brent and his wife, Sheila Bullock of Hartford; five brothers, Eugene and wife Sammye Phelps and Lonnie Jr. and wife Joanna Phelps, both of Hartford, Walter and wife Bonnie Phelps, John and wife Joann Phelps, both of Owensboro and J.C. and wife Janet Phelps of Olaton; three sisters, Pauline Phelps Daugherty of Bartow, Fla., Deloris Phelps Geary of Beaver Dam and Sudie and husband Burbon Pendley of Morgantown; grandchildren, Brittany Bullock and Aaron and wife Laura Wilcox; and great-grandchildren, Michael Wilcox and Lauren Wilcox.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at William L. Danks Funeral Home.

Susan Countzler Carey

GREENVILLE - Susan Countzler Carey, 50, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Tulane University Medical Center due to respiratory arrest. Mrs. Carey was a native of Greenville and a resident of Slidell, La., for the past 20 years. She attended the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy and was currently a pharmacist at Eckards. Mrs. Carey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Slidell and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary of Slidell.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Bradford Carey of Slidell; her parents, Richard Countzler and Martha R. Countzler of Greenville; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Sandy Countzler of Owensboro; and one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and David McKnight of Durham, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call at Gary's Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m.

Daniel A. Clark Jr.

Daniel A. Clark Jr., 56, of Owensboro died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at his home. Born Aug. 5, 1948, in Anniston, Ala., he was founder and president of HARD HAT Knives and Flashlights and a 30-year traveling member as journeyman wireman with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Clark was a former Sunday school teacher and a deacon of First Baptist Church. He was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster, coached soccer and baseball, lifetime member of the National Knife Collector's Association and a member of Yellow Banks Masonic Lodge 957, Ensor Lodge 239, Joe Davis Chapter 32, Owensboro Council 34 and Owensboro Commandry 15. He was recipient of the Knight Cross of Honor and the Cliff Hagan Man and Youth Award in 1987. He was also a Gideon, Promise Keeper and Army veteran serving from 1968 to 1970. He loved his wild shirts, boating and rock 'n' roll music. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Margaret Bell Clark.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kaye; two sons, Daniel A. Clark III and Alex Clark, both of Owensboro.

Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at First Baptist Church with entombment in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 1 to 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday. A Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. today.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Promise Keepers.

Betty Jo King

CALHOUN - Betty Jo King, 70, of East Second Street, Calhoun died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at her home in Calhoun. Betty Jo Bowlds was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Daviess County to Marshall and Oda Belle Bowlds and was later married to Welborn Lee King on Oct. 22, 1960. Betty had retired from Riverside Manor in Calhoun and was a member of the Calhoun Holiness Church.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Welborn; a son, Terry King of Owensboro; a daughter, Tammie King of Calhoun; a granddaughter, Brandy King; her father, Marshall Bowlds of Calhoun; a sister, Faye Whitehead of Owensboro; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with the Rev. Harry Wilson and the Rev. Wavie Sinnett officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Friends may visit with the King family from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until time of services Monday at Musters in Calhoun.

The King family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Betty Jo King Memorial Fund, c/o Muster Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 160, Calhoun, KY 42327. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.

Tamatha Renea McElwain Miller

Tamatha Renea McElwain Miller, 38, of Lake Charles, La., formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Born in Owensboro on May 24, 1966, Tamatha loved crafts and reading. She had lived in Lake Charles for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Miller; four children, including Josh Miller of Owensboro; her father and stepmother, Billy and Mary McElwain of Owensboro; her mother and stepfather, Sheila and Bob Smith of Maceo; a brother, Billy and Karen McElwain Jr. of Owensboro; a stepbrother, Lee; and a stepsister, Kim.

Funeral services are private. Inurnment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Pitino Shelter.

Annette Sanders

Sue Annette Sanders, 60, of Owensboro died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Annette attended Henderson Community College, worked at G.E. and taught and directed preschool at Peace Lutheran Church where she was a member. Annette was preceded in death by her parents, Junius and Susan Marrett.

She is survived by her husband, Roger and two sisters, Ethel Grisham and Kuma Pippin, both of Henderson; and nieces and a nephew; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Peace Lutheran Church with burial in Roselawn cemetery in Henderson. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday and after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Peace Lutheran Church or the Pulmonary Unit at Jewish Hospital.

James 'Jim' L. Thompson Sr.

HANSON - James "Jim" L. Thompson Sr., 65, of 926 Veterans Way, Hanson, formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004. A native of Curdsville, he was born Sept. 25, 1938, to the late James T. Thompson and Doris Cooper Thompson, who survives. Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy and the U.S. Army National Guard, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, former treasurer for American Legion Post 6 and enjoyed coin collecting, NASCAR, fishing and history.

Survivors in addition to his mother, Doris Cooper Thompson, include his children, Paul Ray Johnson of Calhoun, Ava M. Johnson of Calhoun, James L. Thompson Jr. of Bettendorf, Iowa, Joyce Brazzel of Sacramento, Jon W. Thompson of Masonville, Billy G. Thompson of Nashville and Michele Clark of Calhoun; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; six sisters and one brother, Janet King of Owensboro, Shirley Sacra of Fresno, Calif., Linda Craig, Lena Henning, Carolyn Nevitt, Bobby Thompson and Elaine Thompson, all of Owensboro.

Visitation with the Thompson family will be on today from 3 to 8 p.m. and Monday from noon until 2 p.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro with Chaplin Sam Beeny officiating. A private graveside service with military honors administered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696 will be held at Resurrection cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Western Kentucky Veterans Center Activities Department, 926 Veterans Drive, Hanson, KY 42413.

Susan Countzler Carey

Carlos King

CENTERTOWN - Carlos King, 86, of Centertown died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Professional Care Health & Rehab Center in Hartford. He was born in Centertown, was a mechanic and coal miner, was a member of Central Grove Baptist Church, a member of Centertown Masonic Lodge 714 F&AM and was a member of Centertown Volunteer Fire Department for many years, several of those years he was assistant chief. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne King; and a brother, Gene King.

Survivors include his wife, Abby Lee Tichenor King; three sisters, Ruby Elmore of Hartford, Mary Stone of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Helen Ware of Centertown.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Centertown. Burial will be in Central Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until funeral time on Tuesday. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
