Ethel L. Hunter

Ethel L. Hunter, 81, of 2601 Griffith Ave., Owensboro, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Greenville on Dec. 21, 1922, to the late James and Martha Spence Nalley. She retired in 1968 from the former Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital as a ward clerk. She was a member of First General Baptist Church and was active in the Fanny Holder Missionary Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Hunter, on Jan. 29, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Dennis Morgan of Owensboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Melissa Hunter of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Tamara and spouse Ken Knight, Chad and spouse Regina Hunter and Steve and spouse Melanie Morgan; and three great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Knight, Garrett Morgan and Kendyl Knight.
Services are at 9 a.m. Friday, July 9, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 8, and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HARDINSBURG - Virginia Pate King, 71, of Hardinsburg died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at her residence. She was a caregiver and a member of Hites Run Baptist Church near Hardinsburg.
Survivors include her husband, Lovel P. King Jr.; two daughters, Patty Jackson and Janet Dietsch; two brothers, Roy Pate and Charles Pate; and four sisters, Bessie Burks, Mildred Brown, Margaret Pierce and Linda Robinson.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Cloverport cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Hites Run Baptist Church.
Ora Cecil Mackey

Ora Cecil Mackey, 90, of Owensboro died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at the Carmel Home. Miss Mackey was born in Daviess County the daughter of the late Barney and Mona Baird Mackey. She received her BS in elementary education from Western Kentucky State University, her MS in administration and supervision from Indiana University and continued her post graduate work at the University of Kentucky and George Peabody College for Teachers. Miss Mackey was a member of First Baptist Church. Her professional career included service as a primary teacher at Utica School, principal at Snyder School, elementary supervisor for the Daviess County schools, director of elementary education for the Daviess County schools and instructor of teaching of reading and introduction to education at both Kentucky Wesleyan and Brescia colleges. Her professional affiliations included being a member and president of Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, corresponding secretary of Alpha Gamma State of Delta Kappa Gamma, a charter member of the Owensboro branch of the American Association of University Women, a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the state and national Association for Administration and Supervisors, the local, state and national International Reading Association, member and state secretary of the Association for Childhood Education, a member of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators, a member of the board of directors of Kentucky Educational Supervisors, the Owensboro Council for Retarded Citizens and a charter member of the Council for Exceptional Children. She was involved in civics as board member and president of the Owensboro-Daviess County Mental Health Association, a member of the Task Force-Children in Need of Supervision, on the Educational Committee of the Family Life Council, a board member of the American Red Cross, and board member, secretary and member of the executive committee of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra. Miss Mackey was listed in Who's Who in American Education. Her brother, James H. "Bubbie" Mackey, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her brother and his wife, Allen Dean and Mary B. O'Bryan-Mackey of St. Joseph; a nephew, Jay Mackey of Utica; two nieces, Mary M. Elliott of Owensboro and Ann Powers of Utica; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews, Jeff Mackey, James J. Mackey, Burns Mackey, Mari-Scarlett Mackey, Ashley Powers Ferguson, Hadley Powers Embry, Allie E. Powers, Jill Elliott Johnson and Kerribeth Elliott.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home where visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Utica cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Mattie H. 'Martha' Jones

Mattie H. "Martha" Jones, 72, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at her home. She was born in Daviess County to the late Lester Z. and Mary E. Brown Higdon. She was a homemaker and member of Immaculate Catholic Church, and she enjoyed camping and fishing. She was preceded in death, Robert A. Jones, on April 10, 2003; and her son, Charles R. Jones, in November 2000.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Robert Brent and Donna Jones of Owensboro and David A. and Cathy Jones of Owensboro; two sisters, Margie Herman of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Jane Mitchell of Louisville; a brother, Albert Higdon of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Clint and Ashley Jones, Jennifer Wynne and Janeen Leonard; and a great-grandchild, Keegan Leonard.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Christ Chapel in Owensboro Memorial Gardens, where ennichment will follow after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.
Roy Shultz Anderson

Roy Shultz Anderson, 89, of 6294 Old Highway 54, Philpot, passed away Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Daviess County to the late Samuel and Bessie Howard Anderson. He was a member of Dawson Baptist Church and a four-year Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed working on and repairing equipment. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Hugh, Carl and Elmer Anderson.
Surviving is his sister, Melba Hagman of Owensboro; and two brothers, John E. Anderson of Philpot and William "Billy" Anderson of Owensboro.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial following in Sorgho Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY - Dylus Carman, 95, of Breckinridge County died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Carman; and a daughter, Betty Baysinger.

Lillian Moss

Lillian Moss, 97, of Curdsville died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 11, 1906, in McLean County to Jeff Smith and Fronia Keller Smith. She was a homemaker and member of Curdsville Baptist Church. Her husband, Dorsey "Bill" L. Moss, died in 1990.
Survivors include a sister, Lockie Mattingly of Curdsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bethel cemetery in Beech Grove. The Rev. Gary Upchurch will officiate. The family wishes that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Curdsville Baptist Church.

BEAVER DAM - Clara Bennett Black, 76, of 3778 Liberty Road, Beaver Dam, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at home. She was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Ohio County to the late Eckles A. Bennett and Elizabeth Stevens Bennett. She retired as a clerk from Young Hardware in Beaver Dam and was a homemaker. She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church, Liberty United Methodist Women and Liberty Homemakers. She was preceded in death by three brothers, George Bennett, in 1938, Alva Bennett, in 1997, and Calvin S. Bennett, in 2003; and a sister, Shirley Hobleich, in 1993.
Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Black of Beaver Dam; a son, Eldred Bennett Black and his wife, Sandra, of Beaver Dam; a daughter, Edna Jane White and her husband, John, of Cromwell; three granddaughters, Emily Clark and her husband, Cory, of Owensboro, Kimberly Burden and her husband, Jason, of Cromwell and Jonaka Hall and her husband, Jared, of Covington; a grandson, Lance Bennett Black of Beaver Dam; and two great-grandsons, Colby Clark of Owensboro and Drake Burden of Cromwell; and three brothers, Talmage (Ted) Bennett of Anderson, Ind., Delmar Bennett of Jeffersonville, Ind., and the Rev. Charles T. Bennett of Owensboro.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home, with the Rev. Peggy Smith and the Rev. Charles T. Bennett officiating. GREENVILLE - Mr. Wesley Matthew Franklin, 59, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several weeks of illness. He was an Army veteran and a deputy coroner for Muhlenberg County.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Franklin; four brothers, Charles Franklin, Anthony Franklin, Timothy Franklin and David Franklin; a sister, Regina Crick; and his mother, Dorothy Franklin.
Services: 1 p.m. Sunday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial: Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: From 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Hallie Humphrey

DEPOY - Mrs. Hallie Humphrey, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at 3:55 p.m. at her home in Depoy, following several months' illness. She was born in Muhlenberg County on Sept. 22, 1922. She was a member of White Plains Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Humphrey Sr., in 1942; a son, Claude Humphrey Jr.; and three brothers, Fount Majors, Henry Thomas Majors and Jessie Majors.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. at Gary's Funeral Home by the Rev. Wallace Carlton. Burial will be in Yeargins Chapel cemetery in Graham.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann (Glendel) Garrett of Greenville; two sons, Clarence (Debbie) Humphrey of Greenville and Charles (Ann) Humphrey of Paducah; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Flora VanVactor of White Plains; a brother, Orville Majors of White Plains; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today, Aug. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Marie Gatton Phillips

SACRAMENTO - Marie Gatton Phillips, 92, of Sacramento died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Hermitage Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Owensboro. Marie Gatton Phillips was born Nov. 7, 1911, in Muhlenberg County to the late Harry William and Edith Pearl Gatton Sr. She graduated from the former Bremen High School in 1929, attended the Bethel Women's College and graduated from Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1936. Marie retired from teaching after 40 years of service in both McLean and Muhlenberg counties. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honor society for teachers. During her years in high school, Marie taught both English and Speech. One year at the high school level, eight out of 10 of her students who entered the district and regional competitions were winners and two out of eight students went on to win state honors at the University of Kentucky. At the grade school level she introduced the "Unit" method of teaching. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bremen and started the Bethlehem Baptist Church Library, where she remained church librarian for 13 years. Marie also served as an NEA delegate from Kentucky's 2nd Educational District of 2,200 teachers when the convention was held in Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Phillips; her second husband, Frank Luysterburg; and by two brothers, Harry W. Gatton Jr. and Charles W. Gatton.
Survivors include a brother and his wife, C.M. "Bill" and Leigh Gatton and their daughter, Chase, of Kingsport, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Gatton of Rumsey and Lorene Gatton of Bremen; a nephew, Charles W. Gatton Jr. of Bremen; two nieces, Suzane Gatton of Owensboro and Charlotte Cobun of Morgantown, W.Va.; two great-nephews, Brent Gatton and Cord Cobun; and a great-niece, Christen Marie Gatton-Stokes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bremen, with the Rev. Michael Rust, the Rev. Patrick E. McDowell and the Rev. Roy Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery. Friends may visit with the Gatton family from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. A video tribute of Mrs. Marie Gatton Phillips' life will be presented at 7 p.m. today at Musters in Calhoun.
