Joseph C. Higdon
30 November 2001

Joseph C. Higdon, 88, of 410 West Ninth St., Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in Paducah. The St. Lawrence native was a funeral service associate at Glenn Funeral Home for 37 years and a member of St. Stephen Cathedral, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. The Navy veteran of World War II, survived the sinking of USS North Hampton and was a driver for Adm. William "Bull" Halsey Jr. His wife, Mary Ellen Higdon, died July 21, 2001.

Survivors include four sons, Charles A. "Tony" Higdon and John W. Higdon, both of Owensboro, M. Larry Higdon of Island and W. Frederick Higdon of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two daughters, Joellen Ivey and Helena Schultz, both of Paducah; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Victor Higdon of Louisville; and two sisters, Olivia Cassidy of Louisville and Sister Rose Henry Higdon of Nerix.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and after noon Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Stephen Cathedral.

Civilla 'Billie' Simpson

CENTERTOWN -- Civilla "Billie" Simpson, 71, of Centertown died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Ohio County Hospital. The Livermore native was a homemaker and member of Lone Star General Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Buster" Simpson; and a son, John William Simpson Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Simpson of North Webster, Ind., and Gene Simpson of Climax, N.C.; five daughters, Janie Whitson of Kennedy, Ala., Jenny Likens of North Webster, Susie Simpson of Syracuse, Ind., Teresa Hall of Louisville and Cindy Wyatt of Milford, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Martin Barrett of Borden, Ind., and James Barrett of Steavensville, Mich.; and three sisters, Mary Hamilton and Sue Baize, both of Centertown, and Ruby Stites of Hartford.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Centertown. Burial will be in Daugherty Family cemetery near Centertown. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Joseph 'Jay' Fox

DRAKESBORO -- William Joseph "Jay" Fox, 85, of Drakesboro died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Muhlenberg County native was owner and operator of Fox General Merchandise and Fox Bottle Gas. He was a member of Drakesboro First Baptist Church and Hazel Creek Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Boggess Fox; two daughters, Joanna Fox of Drakesboro and Janice Fox of Central City; and a brother, John Paul Fox of Brandon, Miss.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville.

M. Kathryn Pahon
2 December 2001

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- M. Kathryn Pahon, 89, of Greenville, formerly of Owensboro, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Horizon Hospital in Greenville. The Burghill, Ohio, native retired from Interstate Department store in Owensboro in 1975 after more than 20 years of service as a sales associate. She was a member of Burghill Baptist Church and enjoyed flowers, playing bingo and spending time with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael K. Pahon, on June 1, 1993; a son, Richard Pahon; and two daughters, Cinthia Pahon and Sueann Pahon.

Survivors include a brother, James A. Fell of Cortland, Ohio; a sister, Evelyn B. McKinley of Ashtabula, Ohio; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Tuesday at Baumgardner Funeral Home in Kineman, Ohio. Burial will be in Kinsman cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Thelma Tooley Mason
28 November 2001

ROCKPORT, Ky. -- Thelma Tooley Mason of Rockport died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Beaver Dam Health Care Center. The Rockport, Ky., native retired as owner of Thelma's Grocery in Rockport and was as member of Rockport Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, W. Bruce "Pete" Mason; a daughter, Suzanne Alexander of Brownsville; a grandchild; and two sisters, Bette Curtis of Rockport and Hazel Rigsby of Madison, Tenn.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Echols cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lillian Snyder
11 December 2001

TELL CITY, Ind. -- Lillian Snyder, 80, of Lake City, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at her home. The Hawesville native was a homemaker. Her husband, Justin Snyder, died June 24, 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Sonya Bloom of Orlando, Fla.; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Conrad Keown of Hammond, Ind.; and two sisters, Agnes Wagner of Evansville and Opal Cheek of Hawesville.

Services are at 11 a.m. EST Thursday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City, Ind. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Tell City. Visitation is after 9 a.m. EST Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to a favorite charity.

Ann Pendleton Wooten Sabetta

Ann Pendleton Wooten Sabetta, 79, of Owensboro died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at her home. The Hartford native was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, D.A.R., Cotillion Club and the Goodfellows Board of Directors. She had been a partner in Cox Drilling, developed the Royal Oak Country Club and Bahama Reef Country Club and worked as an administrative assistant at the . Her husband, Thomas J. Sabetta Sr., died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Thomas J. Sabetta Jr. of Louisville; and a granddaughter.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Goodfellows Club.

Beulah F. Meece
5 December 2001

RICHLAND, Ind. -- Beulah F. Meece, 93, of Richland died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Evansville from pneumonia complications. She was a member of Richland United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a charter member of Ebenezer Home Economics Club, member of the Richland and Boonville senior citizens and former president of Hatfield Senior Citizens. She enjoyed singing, playing guitar and spending time with her family. Her husband, George Meece Sr., died in 1991.

Survivors include two sons, William Earl Meece of Huntingburg, Ind., and George "Junie" Meece Jr. of Chrisney, Ind.; a daughter, Diane Faye Unfried of Boonville, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, Ind. Burial will be in Garden of Memory cemetery in Gentryville, Ind. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Grace M. Poehlein

TELL CITY, Ind. -- Grace M. Poehlein, 84, of Indianapolis, formerly of Tell City, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Hoosier Village Health Care in Indianapolis. The Owensboro native and her husband founded the first public accounting and tax service business in Tell City in 1946. She graduated from Tell City High School, was a member of National Honor Society, and was a lifelong member of Tell City's First Baptist Church, where she held many offices. Her husband of 37 years, Ralph Poehlein, died April 17, 1990.

Survivors include two brothers, Edmund Buchser of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and William J. Buchser of Evansville; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 2 p.m. EST Saturday at First Baptist Church in Tell City. Burial will be Sunday in Greenwood cemetery in Tell City. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. EST Saturday and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Baptist Church.

Craig N. Williams

ROCKPORT, Ind. -- Craig N. Williams, 24, of Rockport died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System from suffocation. The Owensboro native was a bartender, attended St. Bernard's Catholic Church and was a member of Sons of the American Legion Post 254.

Survivors include his parents, Larry and Diane Williams of Rockport; his grandfather, Ernie Williams of Rockport; his grandmother, Faeanne Pruden of Evansville; and a sister, Angie Ayala Williams of Huntingburg, Ind.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be in Sunset Hill cemetery in Rockport. Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

John Robert Moore
5 December 2001

ROCKPORT, Ind. -- John Robert Moore, 58, of Rockport died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System from cancer. The Goshen native was owner-mechanic of John's Moore's Automotive Inc. in Patronville, Ind., worked at Retiki Coal Mines as a mechanic for 25 years and was recognized several times for his Christmas lighting on Booth Avenue in Owensboro. A son, Jeff Moore, died in 1997.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Diane Moore; a son, Robert Moore of Rockport; a daughter, Lisa Moore of Owensboro; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy Moore of Evansville, Larry Moore of Dixon, Mo., and Gary Moore of Grandview, Ind.; and three sisters, Patricia Stepro and Brenda Wead, both of Grandview, and Virginia Wheatley of Huntingburg, Ind.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be in New Hope cemetery in Newtonville, Ind. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James Roscoe Murphy
28 November 2001

DEPOY -- James Roscoe Murphy, 58, of Depoy died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. The Todd County native was a retired farmer, an entrepreneur and a Methodist.

Survivors include a son, Victor Tutt of Greenville; five daughters, Yolanda Eldridge of Clarksville, Tenn., Debra Bard and Barbara Drake, both of Greenville, Sandy Tutt of Hopkinsville and Lisa Sharber of Morton's Gap; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Edgar Lee Murphy of Louisville; two sisters, Jacquelin Bard of Depoy and Seanetta Murphy of Louisville; several nephews and nieces; and several cousins.

Services are at 1 p.m. today at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Greenville. Burial will be in Reynolds cemetery in Greenville. Visitation is after 11 a.m. today at the church. Bibb's Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
