Gene B. Yelton, served on Bracken school board
Gene Baxter Yelton, former Bracken County businessman and school board member, died Wednesday after suffering a possible aneurysm at his home in Sun City Center, Fla. He was 61.
Mr. Yelton was a retired maintenance specialist for General Electric who started an appliance and furniture business in Bracken County in the 1970s.
He also served eight years on the Bracken County School Board, where he helped bring the first kindergarten to the county and worked to establish Taylor Elementary School.
"He was interested in anything for the community," said Dewey Cummins, who served on the school board with Mr. Yelton in the mid-1970s.
Mr. Yelton was a basketball player for Bracken County High School in 1955, when the school played in the state tournament. His future wife, Phyllis, was a cheerleader for the team. They married after graduating from high school, and Mr. Yelton started working for General Electric.
"Dad had charisma. You had to love him," said his son, Philip Yelton of Brooksville. "If something had to be done, Dad would be right there. He always had a project."
Sometimes it was painting a neighbor's house or helping with a tobacco crop or installing a furnace. He had a quick smile and a ready joke.
"When he walked in a room, people felt better," his son said.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Brooksville, where he formerly served as chairman of the finance committee and was a Sunday School superintendent. He was past president of Brooksville Lions Club and was an overseer for the Bracken County Water District.
At General Electric he was a maintenance specialist. He was laid off in the early 1970s and started his own maintenance company. Within a few years he had started an appliance and furniture business on the family farm. He and his wife also developed a 40-site campground and lake on the farm.
In the late 1980s he was called back to GE and worked there until the early 1990s. He and his wife bought a winter home in Sun City Center and split their time between Florida and Bracken County. When their son, Philip, decided to open Yelton's Home Furnishings in 1995, Gene Yelton helped re-establish the business and helped his son install kitchens.
He reveled in children, especially his grandchildren.
"When Dad showed up, kids came running. He had a nickname for everyone," his son said.
Mr. Yelton would take the grandchildren and for tractor rides.
"It never was big things; it was little things he did," his son said.
"We always attended church every Sunday as a family. Dad led by example," Philip Yelton said. "The important things to him were family and friends and God. He was a good example of how to be a husband and father and keep your faith in the Lord."
Other survivors include his wife, Phyllis Yelton; his mother, Anna B. Yelton of Brooksville; other sons, Brian Yelton and Derrick Yelton of Brooksville and Mitchell Yelton of Falmouth; a brother, Jerry Yelton of Atlanta; sisters, Rosemary McKibben of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Janice Fatka of Memphis, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church, Sun City Center, Fla. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Concord United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o David Kurtz, 110 Elizabeth St., Brooksville, 41004.
